Just saw an email announcing a pilot program for the sale of beer and wine beginning this school year at Fitton and the Hart Center.

Interesting. I’m not at the age where drinking during the day or when I have to drive home is particularly appealing but it will be interesting to see how this goes and whether it impacts attendance in any way.

I get it, but I've seen way too much awful behavior at athletic events (e.g., the two reported arrests at last week's Celtics-Nets game) fueled by alcohol. I like a beer or a glass of wine as much as anyone but personally I would like to see alcohol banned at all athletic events. Yes, I know alcohol sales are a big money maker at sports venues.

Details are up on the Athletics page. Break out the wristbands. Purple, one down two to go. White, two down one left. Purple and White, the party is over.

Will it bring more students to the games?
For home football games at Fitton Field, beginning with the home opener against Merrimack on Sept. 11, sales will start when gates open 90 minutes prior to kickoff and conclude with eight minutes remaining in the third quarter. Alcohol sales during basketball games inside the Hart Center will conclude after the first media timeout of the second half, and sales at men's hockey will end following the second intermission.

Given longstanding complaints about this athletic dept living in the dark ages, I'm surprised at the tepid reaction here.

Will this policy help get fans back in their seats after halftime tailgating ?

Better late to the party than never going in the first place I guess.
Good for adults, but don't think too many students are going to pay what they will inevitably charge. BYOB a lot cheaper.

If HC can make some additional money along with adding to the fan experience, I really don't see how this is a bad thing.

Who said it was a bad thing?
No one is going to say "HC is selling beer now. I'm not going."

Yes, on this subject I'm being a grumpy old man. I'm grumpy on this subject also, but think of it as a user tax that could raise revenue to keep Coach Chesney for one more contract cycle after the first one.

It'll be interesting...probably will help at Hart moreso than Fitton as many of the imbibers watching the action on the gridiron tailgate already. Can't hurt though....jumbotron, Polar Park game and beer/wine sales ....it's like we're actually in the entertainment biz again.

The announcement is silent about tailgating or a vendor. A year ago February, ADMB introduced this for discussion to the HCAA board... He said that a vendor would provide this service... to get such a vendor he expected that the contract would require restrictions on tailgating, such as 'persons who go into the tailgating areas at halftime would not be allowed back in... Several board members objected to restrictions on tailgating see BC's policies on alcohol & tailgating bceagles.com/sports/2015/8/14/GamedayA-Z-Football.aspx

Majority of students are still under 21, remember. IMO, the number of people who wouldn't go to a Holy Cross football game without alcohol sales at Fitton but would with alcohol available for purchase, you could fit inside a phone booth.

I think banning bad people from these events is the better solution. Venue bans are actually enforce-able now with facial recognition. It's funny -- in England alcohol is banned at all Premier League soccer venues...but there are about 1,000 booths you can go to at any point during the game and place bets with a bookie. In the old Yankee Stadium, there was no alcohol in the bleachers from 1998-2008. These sections were essentially bullpens with one way in and one way out. No connection to the rest of the stadium.

Same as Fenway if I'm not mistaken; i.e., no connection to rest of park.

I feel like I'm already at that age. I actually didn't start drinking coffee until my girlfriend (now fiancee) moved in with me at age 30. So now that I'm on that bandwagon, a nice hot cup of coffee in a treat I look forward to on the ride home from any event. I also have started to work in non-alcoholic beer into my day-drinking regimen.

When you offer beer in the stadium, that means tailgating ends before kickoff and you stay in stadium at halftime. Pretty simple formula that works for every other school in the country: Tailgate for 3 hours before, go root for the best team in the PL for four quarters and call it a day.
HC87 and others will likely have a problem with this. Heck, he didn’t want to hire BC and spent the first year calling him Coach Ray Bans. But, we finally have a product worth rooting for, and so let’s enjoy the pregame, enjoy the game, and call that a great day.
Out of curiosity, do people see having to go to the game after. 3-hour tailgate, with alcoholic beverages waiting for you inside, as an unfair punishment?
