Today's Courier Journal carried an article from USA Today "The 10 best coaches in history", likely spurred by the recent announcement about Coach K retiring in a year. I thought it might be interesting to start a debate here on our board and ask for votes on the list USA Today provided. I also thought it might be interesting to allow voters to select three coaches- Here's the list and how USA Today ranked them
1) Mike Krzyzewski- 1170-361.... 12 Final Fours...5 Natl Titles 2) John Wooden-- 664-162...12 Final Fours...10 Natl Titles 3) Adolph Rupp---876-190...6 Final Fours...4 Natl Titles 4) Roy Williams---903-264...9 Final Fours...3 Natl Titles 5) Dean Smith---879-254...11 Final Fours...2 Natl Titles 6) Bobby Knight---902-371...5 Final Fours...3 Natl Titles 7) Jim Calhoun---877-382...4 Final Fours...3 Natl Titles 8) Rick Pitino---659-277...5 Final Fours...1 Natl Title 9) Jim Boeheim---982-409...5 Final Fours...1 Natl Title 10) Denny Crum---675-295...6 Final Fours...2 Natl Titles
EDIT: I omitted the word "best" in the poll question-apologies

I will vote for three. Wooden is the best with Coach K and Dean Smith following. I think that the number of final fours matters a lot.

Don’t forget you can vote for three coaches if you wish Thanks, but none of the others besides Wooden is warm and fuzzy.

Overall, I voted for Wooden. One might vote for K because he won in so many different eras (1991 basketball is different from the 2000s and that's different from now), but no one dominated a period anything like The Wiz.

It's interesting that the coach with the highest career W-L percentage is not even on the list. Among those on this list of 10, Adolph Rupp, of course, has the highest W-L percentage, just edging out Coach Wooden who undoubtedly will run away with the most votes when we are done.
I'm still thinking about this--want to make sure I make a studied decision in this weighty matter.....

Wooden is the most successful. Sam Gilbert
But I voted for Knight and Pitino who I think are the best coaches.
In reality give me Buster Sheary. "When you win you walk down main street and when you lose you walk down a back alley." At the end of the funeral Tommy H said we need to drive the entourage down main street to honor buster's winning legacy.
How would you rank HC coaches? 1. Sheary 2. Julian 3. Blaney 4.Willard

I sense some blame him for abandoning ship, but his solid ten year tenure was very enjoyable.

It's a different game today in many ways but Knight was probably the best college coach (in a strictly basketball sense) for the last 30+ years or so of the 20th C. Genius in much of his offensive and defensive schemes and how to teach/implement them to his teams.

I know he’s tough to like but what Calhoun did to bring UConn from where it was when he got there to when he left was pretty amazing. Not saying he’s the best at all but a very impressive career despite being unlikeable in many ways.

Calhoun went 0-20 in his one year at Westport (MA) HS.....I agree though, he was a good coach....people forget how well he did at Northeastern pre-UConn

I went with
John Wooden- extraordinary success for decades with the 10 Natl Titles and never had a losing season in 29 years at Indiana State and UCLA. Some (not likely any on this board) may be unaware that he was a 3X consensus All America player in his own right.
Bobby Knight-- I have always been a fan and HC87 eloquently makes the case for him. Many years ago (1970's) I wrote a letter to him and got back a nice answer and an IU press guide.
Adolph Rupp-- He built Kentucky into the enduring #1 program in NCAA Men's basketball . One testament to his program building is that Kentucky has gone on to win national championships under Joe B. Hall, Rick Pitino, Tubby Smith, and John Calipari.

How can you ignore 5 championships under Coach K ? Adolph Rupp was his territorial pick like Cousy was for the Celtics.

IMO Bob Knight was the best COLLEGE coach ever. Recruited talent to fit his system. Great in-game coach.
I was always of the thought that Dean Smith and Mike Krzyzewski were under-achieving coaches. Take UNC. The talent on that team in the 80s alone was absolutely ridiculous and they won one title....partly because Georgetown handed it to them. Duke...same thing. Loads of talent and should have 10 titles.
Too young to have seen Wooden coach in person. But when you have Kareem and then Walton....you're going to win.

Yes, but a very big part of college coaching is recruiting--so we shouldn't penalize Coach Wooden for landing Kareem, Walton, et al.
By the way-- John Wooden coached 11 consensus All America players. Who can name the first one he coached (without looking it up)?
