This statue is long overdue for many reasons, on many levels. Mr. Cousy is not only a great basketball player but in his imperfect humanity, he is a great man.

One statue wasn't good enough?
Not trying to be sarcastic, it's something that Mr. Basketball himself might say at the unveiling. His comments when they unveiled the first statue were pretty witty, IIRC.

When he spoke at the opening ceremony a month ago at Polar Park, he said if you remember me, chances are you have been collecting social security for twenty years. His most recent witty public comment was to the effect of, the pigeons of Worcester will be happy that I am taking care of them in two places in the city.

Of course one great issue with statues is whether they actually look like the subject. A case in point is the famous statue of Stan Musial in Saint Louis--it looks nothing like him. I hope the next Bob Cousy statue looks like Bob and it is great to see him honored again

There are many reasons to love the Cooz, both as a basketball player and a human being, but I really appreciate the fact that he often expresses his love for the City of Worcester. I have to admit that I wasn't a big fan of Worcester when I was at HC, but after I worked there after law school, and lived there for four years I grew to love it. Yes, it has it's issues but I met a lot of great people; it has great colleges, great restaurants, a first rate art museum, and it's also a good place to practice law. Ironically, when I lived there (up by the old Tatnuck Bookseller if that means anything to anyone) I used to go to 7:00 AM Mass on Sunday and would usually see the Cooz there.

I went and just got home. Brett Nelson and his family were there. Also around 10 players from the Holy Cross basketball team. Togo and Ronnie Perry Sr as well.

Should have had him in an HC jersey. He played in Worcester for Holy Cross, not the Celtics. 2 balls ? Double dribble ? The statue in front of the Hart is superior. This one is too raised.

There are actually more than 2 balls! he is pictured moving the ball behind his back, from hand to hand....one has to see the back side of the statue to understand...

The statue looks great with the jersey and the bronze.
I just wish the DCU had some basketball games. Outside of the globetrotters anybody know of any games there next year?
Funny thing is Cousy didn’t play at DCU or Hart.

Makes a lot of sense for a Cousy statue at the DCU Center. He is after all undefeated there. Perhaps Polar Park will be the next sports venue in the city to get a Cousy statue.

He was a LONG time resident of Worcester, and one of it's most famous. Maybe he should have 10 statues around the city. Jeeesh...

Last I heard that with a few exceptions, Polar Park is a minor league BASEBALL stadium. Love Cousy but we’re getting carried away with the statue stuff. Hart Center (oops, Luth Athletic Complex) and DCU should be honor enough for a Holy Cross basketball Hall of Famer and Long time Worcesterite respectively.

A statue of Ted Williams hitting his home run at Fitton Field will suffice at Polar. I wonder if the Polar bottling plant was down the street from Fitton in 1939 (the company was established in 1882 but not necessarily on Southbridge St.) and if some of the Crowley family snuck over to see the Red Sox play the Crusaders?

News articles about this mentioned t hat Sen Joe Manchin of West Virginia was one of the dignitaries present. Can anyone confirm that? I wonder what the connection is, if any.
