Hire. Better. Coaches. Do that, and I don't care what you look like, if you're an alum, if you sold insurance or you dug ditches. Winning will bring more $$$ too, so that doesn't even have to be at the top of the ranks.

Assuming the interim AD is someone currently inside the department, it almost has to be either Shea or Smith as the only two senior associate AD's. One has a lot more seniority in the department. The other one has been an athletic director at a college. Another factor could be what happens a year from now. Is it hard to be acting head honcho for a year and then go back to a lesser role once an outsider comes in? Frank Vellaccio pulled it off, but I don't think it's common. Whoever gets the interim job might have their days numbered at the school if they don't eventually get the actual job +1 Tom, and Rose is someone who would work well with an interim arrangement and return to her current role. The other? Not so much.

Whoever gets the interim job might have their days numbered at the school if they don't eventually get the actual job Frank pulled it off easily because in his mind he was never second fiddle to anyone after Fr. Brooks. And of course it was Jesuit to Jesuit with Frank keeping the seat warm like Tip O'Neill kept his Congressional seat warm for the Kennedys between when JFK left it in 1953 and Joseph P. Kennedy II took over in 1987. Tip used to enjoy summing up his career by saying he was just a seat warmer.

It was not until Fr. B's tenure that the college asked that the 'contract' between the college and the Society of Jesus (requiring a Jesuit to be President of the College) be nullified, and the Provincial agreed to same. Frank could not harbor any hope of being President, because the 'rules' precluded such.

Chesney for AD? One guy shouldn't try to do two full time jobs. Only works if the job description says "Coach the major sport at the school. Let subordinates actually run the athletic department. And shake the money tree vigorously".

Blossom checked the correct boxes, especially after Creighton's head basketball coach's comments this Spring. Finally someone put into words what many of us have been thinking. Good for Marcus, in the right place at the right time. Apparently his boss at BC was too, moving on to UCLA.

AD is a tough job. How many times do you read a sports column analyzing what an AD did right compared to the ones analyzing what they did wrong. Criticizing AD's is like shooting fish in a barrel for sports commentators and college sports fans. Might as well move up as soon as you can before the whole gig blows up on you because your position is responsible for everything.

Not sure this is apples to apples but there was an executive I knew at a major P&C insurer whose career advice was “never stay in a position more than two years, that way you’ll be gone before your mistakes are discovered.”🤷🏻♂️

Because being a box which can be checked off is the only way a black guy can get a good job? Now I have to decide which post is worse: the one from yesterday which said that MB was inarticulate, uppity and not like us (it used softer language but that is what it said) or this one that concludes that two different black men got their jobs because of their race.

Give Rose a shot. She's been at HC since she was a student. Probably does not have an interest in job hopping. She's seen how the few successful HC coaches have succeeded in the Patriot League. We wouldn't have to pay for two years of on the job training for our unique small lac/D-1 Institution. Would break the glass ceiling in the Athletic Dept. Compliance is well understood as she had that post with no major scandals. Good lord please no.

Some grave assumptions and leaps being made here. Yikes. Alum, have you ever spoken with FADMB? Perhaps the poster(s) who have made comments about FADMB that you take issue with are doing so for a reason other than the color of his skin. Can’t believe I even am writing that.

I'm not sure how this -- Not a personable individual and less liked by his subordinates. Need someone who " bleeds purple ", not a transient hire. -- translates to inarticulate, uppity, and not like us. Big time leap.

The suspicion that the fix is in is generally more suspicion than fact but it's always been that way. They used to say about the City of Worcester workforce: "Five thousand employees, seven last names."

Nick Smith would be the top choice for an interim AD. He certainly has the skill set. The next AD needs to have a special passion for Holy Cross, ie an alum. I will throw a name out there, most people will not know: Rob Godfrey '07. One of our best defensemen during the most successful periods of HC Hockey. He is currently the AD at Mt. Royal in Calgary. He checks all the boxes: Alum, former coach at HC, knows how to hire coached, deals with the same student problems. While he is not a baby kisser like Pine, he can also be an effective fundraiser. And talk about someone who could put a plan in place to join Hockeyeast, he is your man! Probably will not get a sniff, but would be my choice. Imagine this crazy idea: an alum as AD?! Almost makes sense…which is exactly why it won’t happen or be considered at HC. Which by all accounts in my (and many others on this forum at minimum) would agree is a major positive factor in being successful at HC and understanding the challenges, opportunities, etc. If the HC Alumni and Development offices are as good as they claim, Godfrey should already be known as a potential candidate. And any other alums in AD and/or sport leadership roles. I won’t hold my breath on this obviousness. Instead we’ll hear about some unnecessarily hired search firm that identifies the next Moses in the AD world that HC will hire and pump their chest about until they inevitably leave for greener pastures earlier than expected or desired. What’s that saying about the definition of insanity??

Someone named Karla Karch is the Director, Cougars Athletics and Recreation. s3.amazonaws.com/mrucougars.com/documents/2020/11/3/CAR_Student_Athletes_Handbook_2020_2021.pdf

Don’t get caught up in titles. Happens all the time in the corporate world too. If the OP about Godfrey knows him well, I suspect he knows that Godfrey likely runs the Athletic side of that Dept. Remember: Canada is weird with some things.

the one from yesterday which said that MB was inarticulate, uppity and not like us (it used softer language but that is what it said) guy74, this is what I was referring to in alum's post that was quite the assumption and translation by my estimation. I'm not sure how this -- Not a personable individual and less liked by his subordinates. Need someone who " bleeds purple ", not a transient hire. -- translates to inarticulate, uppity, and not like us. Big time leap. This is what scrantonsader wrote: When many white people meet a black person who impresses them, they comment on that they are "articulate" or a "good family man." You might recall that Joe Biden and GWB both said things like that about BO during the 2008 campaign. It is similar to the "soft bigotry of low expectations" that GWB spoke about during his presidency. Scrantonsader doesn't like MB for some reason (apparently football people and their hangers on reached this conclusion without telling us) so he needs to show us that MB is the wrong kind of black guy. The criticisms of MB's management style are amusing as well. White managers are described as "firm" whereas blacks and women are described as shrill and hysterical and "condescending." I note that nobody is saying exactly what the football complaints are about MB. This is not to say that scrantonsader and others like him cannot get along with people of color. They can and do every day. It is just that when they decide they don't like them, they return to the traditional racist tropes. Of course, they aren't blatant about it so instead of saying that HC should hire a white male alumnus they use the kind of language that scranton used, i.e. "same communication and leadership styles we embody and cultivate on the Hill." As to purple1 saying that MB got his job because he was black (and timholycross jumping in and saying that Martin Jarmond got his for the same reason) I don't believe that anyone who read those two posts could believe that it meant anything else. It specifically referenced the Creighton basketball coach's unfortunate comments. You asked if I have ever spoken to MB. I have not. WHy do you ask?

I think that if HC wants to continue its drive for greater diversity in its hiring it should go for someone who is often immediately pushed aside or overlooked. Why not try hiring an experienced older white male?

Why not try hiring an experienced older white male? If you want to go that route for the interim job, there is a guy currently in the athletic department who meets those criteria, is an HC alum, and has experience running a college athletic department. Unfortunately, might be too much emphasis on the "older" to make him a good candidate.
