As to purple1 saying that MB got his job because he was black (and timholycross jumping in and saying that Martin Jarmond got his for the same reason) I don't believe that anyone who read those two posts could believe that it meant anything else. It specifically referenced the Creighton basketball coach's unfortunate comments. It was very similar to the Amherst Men's Lacrosse situation with a couple of racist incidents with the team, the coach getting fired and then them hiring an African-American head coach. The parents and kids revolted against the new coach during the pandemic "non-season" and they got new guy fired. There is now a discrimination lawsuit filed over this. www.bostonglobe.com/2021/08/13/sports/amherst-college-mens-lacrosse-program-crisis-former-coach-files-discrimination-suit/

guy74, this is what I was referring to in alum's post that was quite the assumption and translation by my estimation. I'm not sure how this -- Not a personable individual and less liked by his subordinates. Need someone who " bleeds purple ", not a transient hire. -- translates to inarticulate, uppity, and not like us. Big time leap. This is what scrantonsader wrote: When many white people meet a black person who impresses them, they comment on that they are "articulate" or a "good family man." You might recall that Joe Biden and GWB both said things like that about BO during the 2008 campaign. It is similar to the "soft bigotry of low expectations" that GWB spoke about during his presidency. Scrantonsader doesn't like MB for some reason (apparently football people and their hangers on reached this conclusion without telling us) so he needs to show us that MB is the wrong kind of black guy. The criticisms of MB's management style are amusing as well. White managers are described as "firm" whereas blacks and women are described as shrill and hysterical and "condescending." I note that nobody is saying exactly what the football complaints are about MB. This is not to say that scrantonsader and others like him cannot get along with people of color. They can and do every day. It is just that when they decide they don't like them, they return to the traditional racist tropes. Of course, they aren't blatant about it so instead of saying that HC should hire a white male alumnus they use the kind of language that scranton used, i.e. "same communication and leadership styles we embody and cultivate on the Hill." As to purple1 saying that MB got his job because he was black (and timholycross jumping in and saying that Martin Jarmond got his for the same reason) I don't believe that anyone who read those two posts could believe that it meant anything else. Nice "mansplaining" for the rest of us what a poster was really saying. I'm not that bright so I just considered the comments to be what they were, a criticism of an AD which happens all day every day all around the country.

Sorry, longsuffering. SOV claimed he didn't understand. Alum, consistency is your hallmark. If someone disagrees with your twisted analysis, then cry RACIST......if they attempt to use logic......cry it again and state they are making your point. All from a guy who admits he is speaking from ignorance as he has never even had a conversation with MB.

My interaction with MB was entirely one-way, tuning in on 4-6 webinars he held on Zoom. These all originated from his home. For 15-16 months of his short tenure, he and most of the administrative staff worked from home, and interacted via Zoom. (I was speaking with someone who works in Fenwick, and this person remarked how great it was to hear voices in the hallways, as staff returned to campus.) My perception of MB, based on several hours of webinars, is quite different from scrantonsader's characterization.
And I do find it a tad peculiar to read characterizations of MB's interactions with staff that apparently are primarily based on interactions that occurred in Zoom meetings, which I find to be a poor medium for judging and evaluating anyone.

Since Phreek mentioned scranton's comments, I didn't recall what he had said he had to look it up.
First, not sure what "from the outside looking in" means. Does it mean he simply doesn't work in the athletics department? If so, that's probably all of us. Does it mean, he's not an HC alum? That'd be a different perspective.
I've met Marcus personally multiple times over his tenure at HC. I found him friendly and helpful. I know that he would be able to pick me out of a lineup. Like, Phreek, I attended multiple on-line meetings with him including one which was specifically for my Class to give us an update on HC athletics. I chuckled because as the video meeting wound down, he told my Classmates that if they had any further questions on HC athletics they could either contact him directly or "contact sader1970 (used my name, not alias) as he knows everything that's going on with Crusader athletics." Now, while that was a joke, he knew me as a strong supporter of HC athletics and someone who tried to keep informed for both personal reasons and to keep my Classmates updated. No, I didn't know him as well as I knew Dick Regan or Nate Pine, but if he hung around as long as them, I probably would have.
My final take on the subject: Not a bad guy and never heard any scuttlebutt that he looked down on his staff. Did hear some direct stories that I won't repeat having been sworn to sources anonymity other than that he did try to game some of the financial numbers. I found that he did a much better job being open and available to HC alums than his two immediate predecessors. He also seemed to go out of his way to gain the highest profile he could within the community. Was he the best public speaker? Probably not but he was at least adequate. Did he prove he can hire the best head coaches? Probably not but time will tell. Could he raise money? Much better than Dick but not as good as Nate.
All in all, I'd agree that his grade would be an "incomplete."

During the run up to my 25th reunion there was a session scheduled at five-ish for Dick to review all the Athletic programs for our class. It was scheduled for the faculty lounge at the top of the then relatively new Edith Stein (?) building advertised as having great views of the Worcester skyline. I was really looking forward to the session, the views and the food spread but at the last minute it was cancelled with the explanation that Dick lost track of the event and had something else scheduled and it was too last minute for a replacement. No racial inferences were made about it as I recall.

Channeling my inner Walter Mitty, If I was AD I would have chosen an experienced MBB head coach with a winning record at a lower level and I would have kept WBB coach AM, but I still found MB to be a fine gentleman and good representative of HC Athletics. I just thought labeling Scrantonsader's comments as racist was too much. You get to criticize an adult, paid Administrator or Coach on a discussion board. That leaves out Jesuits who are not paid.🙂

Is he adding this Win to his resume ? In fact he has had very little to do with the success of HCBC and this program - still amazed Creighton did not take a closer look at our basketball program in deciding on him

Fingers crossed and prayers offered that 2021-22 will make the evaluation of the hoops hire no longer am issue of concern or it will delay a response for another year because we have a .500 season
I think the talent is there to be much improved, but time will tell
As an N-1 we should be able to reverse our fortunes in m/w hoops in 2 years given the roster only takes a handful of improvements with a good coach to significantly improve from bad to almost good

A .500 season, although disappointing to the faithful, would have to be a credit to BN and MB as we haven't broken even in years. If some astute observers are able to see that we could have had more wins with better in game coaching we will just have to hope that BN is improving in that area each year with continued experience. It would also mean his recruiting was enough to give us a winning season as he owns the roster now.

Agree and that should end the discussion or at least put off for another year whether it was a reasonable or good hire. Some PL and eastern coaches believe the athleticism and general basketball talent is much improved

Maybe we should have another thread- "Changing MB's Grade to ___ from incomplete. What are the criteria?". More's out of his control from here on given that he's no longer in charge. But some things would definitely reflect on him, pro or con.

I will gladly give MB some credit if Nelson turns out to be a great coach for us. In fact, I’d do just about anything if we could become really good at basketball over the next couple of seasons.

I would hope the person has already been named or will be very soon even if not publicly announced. Even with the most likely candidates of Shea and Smith, it's nice to have a little time with your predecessor, and we are down to 2 1/2 weeks. Time with predecessor would be even more important if not one of those two

Just because nothing has been announced doesn't mean that some kind of a transition isn't happening behind the scenes. Wheels started moving on that the minute it was clear what was happening. MB isn't going to leave on 9/24 and then on 9/27 the rest of the department looks at each other and asks, "Now what?" They're past that regardless of what has or hasn't been announced publicly.

Would HC be better served by setting up Endowed Chairs for various positions in the Athletics Dep't such as AD and various coaching positions? Additionally would offering tenure track faculty status to coaches help in the recruitment of coaches & players & improve the stability of athletics overall and add to the course offerings at HC as well. There are fine colleges which offer faculty status to coaches who in fact teach for part of the off seasons and are functioning full members of the faculty. Naturally, these courses would be first-rate in keeping with the high academic profile of the college. Obviously, these steps would necessitate this expansion of academic offerings from the Athletics Department classroom and would incur additional expense. One semester in these type of classes could be part of a core curriculum. For instance a friend while a student at Columbia College on Morningside Heights in Manhattan(Not the School of General Studies) took a course in analyzing basketball from the legendary basketball coach at Columbia, Jack Rohan. My friend thought it was great and it helped in his understanding of the game patterns, strategy & tactics as well as the human interaction between the coach, players & fans. There were other offerings, too. Students were required to take a one semester class offered by the Athletics Dep't. It was believed these class offerings helped to develop the whole person.

They would be happy to do so. I would think that $5 million for the AD and $7.5 million for the basketball coaches and football coach would do it.
Jim Kavanagh's position has been endowed for more than 20 years.
