The good news is there have been no defections this school year. Coach has shopped for some good groceries. Now we see if he can cook the dinner.

Possibly, but when one is teaching and developing g a new system, that is not necessarily bad news.

The good news is there have been no defections this school year. Well I would hope not. We're only six weeks into the school year. Healthy defections in the middle of a school year like Lowder and Hargis are pretty rare. Since the return of scholarships, the only other one I can think of is Josh Kramer. Mitch Hahn was unhappy and homesick while at HC, but he didn't leave in the middle of the year

Looking at the team photo, and angles/elevation can make it deceiving, but it appears as if some of them have grown in the last few months. For example, Humphrey, Dorsey, Montgomery, Martindale, and Kenney are as tall or taller than Gates. With some luck, our size and length on the perimeter will be an asset this season.

Covid, the extra year of eligibility and the portal have disrupted the traditional linear four year cycle. At least we will have the same staff/system for the third consecutive year.

Yes, none of our competition played a full season last year, but all of them have an assortment of juniors and seniors who have full seasons under their belts plus that mini season last year. We don't have the experience everyone else has. That experienced upper classmen leadership is usually pretty important in the Patriot League

Especially when one of the graduates provided about 1/4 of both points and rebounds

I'm still trying to comprehend going into the Hart to see a team that I have never seen play in person before, after being away for just one year.

Also meant to add - I think we'll learn more this year about CBN than we've learned in the first 1.5 years combined. As much as I hate making predictions, i will say this: I don't think I will be calling for his dismissal at the end of the year......nor will I be clamoring for an immediate contract extension. How's that for taking a stand.

Sometimes a you'll see a new coach has a bunch of freshmen and sophomores playing. You'll pretty much know he's a crummy coach if two years later he still has a bunch of freshmen and sophomores playing. Not if those freshmen are one and dones at Duke or Kentucky. Not if there is a large amount of those players in the portal. a. of course b, something's wrong somewhere.

I just feel enthusiasm knowing we have a coach (who's motivated to be at least) on the way up and a full team of players he recruited who want to be at HC to play for him and the style he recruited them for. In that sense he is further (I would have typed farther before Crossports) ahead of Coach Riga and Magarity who have a minority of players they have recruited for their preferred style of play. From the limited video clips we get it appears the team has bonded and bought in.

BACK TO WORK: Holy Cross men's basketball prepares for the season with young core Crusaders will host open practice on Saturday for fans to attend. Jennifer Toland Telegram & Gazette
The Holy Cross men’s basketball 2021 season ended disappointingly when a positive COVID-19 test paused team activities and prevented HC from participating in the Patriot League Tournament, but, with back-to-back convincing wins over Army and Boston University, the Crusaders were encouraged by the way they ended their 16-game regular season.
“To win those two games the way we did,” HC coach Brett Nelson said Tuesday, before the Crusaders’ ninth practice of 2021-22, “that gave us momentum going into the offseason and I thought our guys really attacked spring from the standpoint that I’ve seen improvements in a lot of different guys’ games and that’s continued to happen this fall. We’re getting better and I’m excited about where we’re at.”
Holy Cross sophomore R.J. Johnson started all 16 games last season for the Crusaders. The Crusaders, who opened practice Oct. 1 and tip off the season Nov. 9, won just three games in 2019-20, Nelson’s first as coach, while the roster underwent an upheaval as numerous players transferred. HC went 5-11 last season and won three of its last six.
This year’s team is young with seven sophomores, including guard R.J. Johnson, who started all 16 games last season, and guard Nolan Dorsey, a transfer from the University of New Mexico, and four freshmen. Forward Gerrale Gates, who averaged a team-high 16.4 point per game in 2021, leads the three-man senior class.
“Every year is big,” Nelson said, “but we’re continuing to build this. We had a plan when we got here and we stuck to it and we haven’t flinched. I really believe in what we’re doing, how we’re doing it and, most importantly, who we’re doing it with. With the majority of the team returning, it has run a lot smoother this year. Guys know what to expect. They know the drills and how we operate, and they know our system. They continue to stay hungry and stay on this path.”
Holy Cross is on fall break, so it should be a beneficial week for the Crusaders.
“Having no classes,” Nelson said, “we’re able to do a lot of install and implementation stuff, but overall, our guys are working really hard, they have great attitudes and I like the progress we’re making.”
HC fans will have a chance to check out the Crusaders during an open practice at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hart Center. Those attending must show a photo ID and proof of full vaccination. Children under the age of 12 are permitted and do not need to provide proof of vaccination. Masks are required.
“We’re going to treat it just like a normal practice,” Nelson said. “We will bring referees in that day and do a lot of scrimmaging, a lot of up and down. It’s another day for us to get better, and a great opportunity for our fans, students and people who want to check us out and get their first glimpse of our team at the early stages of our season and to see the growth of our players.”

Looks like it was tie as to who posted it first. Thank to both. I see where Gates is referred to as a senior so my guess is he will be graduating in May.

It's hard to feel slighted by our ranking given recent history. I still feel (as do others) that if our bigs are average to slightly above average HC will win more than it loses.
