Looks like Don Brown is the front runner to take over at UMass. Reports are that an announcement may be coming before Thanksgiving:

^ Arizona closes out its season @ Arizona St. on Nov. 27. Assume Brown would want to avoid announcing he was leaving until after the season ends.

Timing would make no difference to Arizona - they are one of the worst teams in FBS - they’ll lose to ASU and would probably let Brown leave early if he requested

Not to be an ageist, but is 67 (as of next season) Don Brown the right guy to figure out the mess in Amherst?
I suppose the young guy Walt Bell clearly wasn’t, so what do I know.
In a way, Brown almost feels a bit like Randy Edsall. Left the head job to go to Maryland and now coming back home to try and resurrect a dog poop program.

Placeholder while they figure out what they are going to do with a concrete plan that will make the job more attractive to candidates, and two more yrs feeding at the public trough and Brown is vested for a state pension. That makes it attractive to him.

Unless the hockey championship bought him some time, but have to figure the disaster with football and men’s basketball has to have his seat warm.

Worst 1A squad in the country + no conference willing to take the FB team as a stand-alone + career-killer getting hammered by 8 TD's every game = no decent sitting head coach wants the job.
That's why Brown is the right choice for the moment, as Bamford is not going the never been a head coach/young 1A asst. route again after it just resulted in a 2-23 record.

2-23, 3-29. Former Assistants might be better off taking over from a winning coach who is moving up instead of trying to resurrect a program while in need of OJT themselves.

UMass HFC is a complete dead end job. This move makes sense -- similar to the UCONN route. Hire an older coach with past winning experience, a guy that just wants to get back in the game for a few years. And hope that you end up with some semblance of stability.
It couldn't be more obvious that there's no niche in the world of FBS football unless UMASS decides its worth leaving the prestigious A-10 to move all sports into the MAC. Which is a decision they clearly chose NOT to make 5 years ago.
Minutemen were absolutely steamrolled by CAA also-ran Maine last week. Can't believe I'm saying this but I have a hard time seeing how they actually managed to beat UConn.

ACTP is 100% right about Brown and becoming vested. This and the fact that he is a Massachusetts guy this is the perfect job for him to get one last kick at the can then retire to his place down the Cape.

MAC already shot down expansion talk, so only option in the foreseeable future for Mass is C-USA as an all-sports member forced to fly non-revenue sports to AL, LA, TX, and can't see their BoT signing off on thi$. Best move for them would be call the CAA hat in hand, offer all sports cept hockey of course and call it a day.

I wonder what will happen with some of Brown’s local MA players who have recently committed to Arizona now that Brown is leaving. I know former Patriot Jermaine Wiggins’ son (a TE) committed to Arizona last year, and one of the top MA recruits this year (LB Tyler Martin at BB&N) recently committed to Arizona over other schools like BC, Michigan and Penn St.

In any case, it's no coincidence that he signed where Brown ended up. Stay tuned. Ditching even a bottom-rung Pac 12 program for Umass is a questionable move.

I hear from my Spencer friends Brown wanted to get back to the Mass region, lots of grand kids, and his wife wasn't happy in Arizona..UMass is a friendly location for them. Brownie (as he is known by his long time friends), still has a lot of fire inside him! He will do a great job there..

A huge impetus for Brown taking the job as I mentioned previously is him being two years from being vested for a state pension.

What is considered a great job?
Three FBS wins in a year?
