Outside of being an undefeated CYO basketball coach, I claim no expertise and this is not intended as an attack on Nelson but the one thing Nelson does not seem to have nor his immediate 3 predecessors, was what Ralph had . . . . the flexibility to game plan for specific opponents. I assume that is a unique or rare talent. It seems that every HC coach after Ralph had one way of doing things and they never deviated from that no matter if they were playing a D-3 or an ACC team. Not sure how Ralph was able to do it but it seemed he and his coaches were able to do an excellent job scouting upcoming opponents for weaknesses that the Crusaders could exploit. I wish Nelson would give Ralph a call. I'm sure he wouldn't come up to Worcester but just pass along some coaching tips because I'm guessing Nelson's previous coaching mentors had the same school of thought as SK, MB and BC - "my way will work and I don't ever need to change anything." They already hosted him for at least one practice this year. Unfortunately, I don’t think RW can offer much.

I didn't think he was there to "help" the team specifically and was there for something else but defer to his buddy hoops for insight into that trip to Worcester.

Isn't it as simple as having a couple of guys start backpedaling a little sooner when a shot is attempted? Probably don't need to install a whole new defense to play more conservatively while offense is cold. We shat all over Bill Carmody's teams for doing that; i.e., being conscientious objectors on the offensive boards.

The problem with Carmody's teams is that they didn't rebound anywhere.
Not rebounding on the offensive end can be a legitimate strategy. Not rebounding on the defensive end is pure negligence.

I was looking over the box score and notice that AF scored 27 points from HC turnovers in the game. We will never win until that gets corrected.

Just to clarify, that is a totally meaningless stat that the NCAA for some reason chooses to put in box scores. These so-called points after turnover can be scored more than a minute after the actual turnover. It can come over after 20 or more passes. It can come after numerous out of bounds plays. It can come after a couple of timeouts. And most of the time it has absolutely nothing to do with the turnover itself.

Haven't checked but how were the "fast break points" which eliminates the issue bison brings up.

Haven't checked but how were the "fast break points" which eliminates the issue bison brings up. There really isn't any legitimate stat for tracking turnovers that actually led to points, fast break or otherwise. Someone could subjectively watch game film and try to quantify the effect of turnovers, but that would be tedious and possibly unreliable. One thing that is certain, however, is that the NCAA stat for points after turnovers is meaningless.

Could it just be an indication of points that your opponent scored right after you had an empty possession?

Well, the way I think of it is, the opponent would not have had the ball to score, no matter how long it took, if we did not turn the ball over.

It's a challenge at every level to get players to box out. Those that do help their team immensely. You don't have to be a great athlete to box out.

It's really a lost art...and in many ways, quite frankly, not needed as much with so many 3's leading to long rebounds....still taught, but it's more a measure of staying in front of your man

A couple of my observations on this game that I haven’t seen discussed here. I don’t know how often Nelson has been T’d up as a head coach or what the details of his technical in the 1st half were, but if he did it to fire up the team he needs to rethink that tactic as Air Force went on a 19-0 run spanning the two halves. On the other hand, I thought that the team’s defense against the back door plays in this tournament was much improved over what it was in the Quinnipiac debacle.
