Nothing you can do with success. It’s the nature of the business. Position coaches I think less of an issue. Coordinators more difficult.

At some point the departures of assistants will have a negative effect of the program as a whole. I don’t think we have reached that point now, but it’s not ideal to be searching for new position coaches less than a month before the start of spring practice. Good luck to Izzy. Coaches moving on is not a surprise. When you have a successful program you lose coaches to other programs. The Chesney tree has started. They have known about these coaches moves for awhile. They will be replaced before Spring ball.

I am sure there have already been contacts. It is not as if HC and Chesney are out with hat in hand begging for folks to come to the Hill. HC is a place where coaches want to go to hone their skills and eventually to move up (as recent assistants have been doing). That does not hurt HC. It makes it a desirable place to coach.

Prospective assistants are likely ringing CBC's phone off the hook They have been interviewing for weeks. They just hired the cornerbacks coach from Sacred Heart. Kyle Barnes. Played for Chesney at Assumption. They hired Dean Kennedy from Florida as QB Coach and moved Chris Smith up as Offensive Coordinator. Coach Toerper and Izzy will be replaced soon. Stayed tune. Coaches are lining up to be a part of what Coach Chesney is building. This all positive. Congratulations and good luck to the coaches who have moved on.

Interesting career move, since that is a D II school, no? Does Cara continue to lead the CAF effort?

Yes, it's D2. I had heard he was going to be the OC there, but his Twitter page indicates he's going to be the RBs coach as well as the Assistant Head Coach.

Not necessarily revelevant to the current hiring cycle, but crazy to think that this guy was going to be the OC at HC 4 years ago, and now might be knocking on the door of an NFL head coaching gig (if the recent trend with Sean McVay’s assistants continues).

DiMichele being hired as Safety Coach. Huge get for him to come back on recruiting front. Great energy guy; HC guy. Home run.
Leaves the RB coach. Have to imagine that’s coming soon as kids leave for break on Friday.

Dharry:
Thanks for sharing this info. Always great to see a former player make his way back to Mt. St. James.
Question for you (and our other knowledgable posters):
At the FCS level, is it unusual for an assistant coach to leave one job to take another job at a rival school/school in the same league?
I think FCTG, in his final season, picked up an assistant from Bucknell and made him a DC (Kushaba?). Other than that, I haven’t seen it too often, although I’m sure it happens more than I’ve witnessed.
Also, do you think this is a big loss for Lehigh? I think DiMichele was their recruiting coordinator.

I think it’s unusual but the caveat to that is that DiMichele went to HC - so coming back to a place he loves makes sense. I also think the pay bump for assistants helps
I think it’s a big loss for them in recruiting and big gain for HC.
Finally you are entering a talented roster with a Head Coach who signed a 5 year extension vs a guy who could lose his job after 2022.
But overall I think it’s more on the unusual side.

Not to be overly simplistic, but this looks to me like a classic case of a team getting stronger while simultaneously weakening a conference rival. A win-win for us.

Dharry is absolutely on point. The difference now is Coach Chesney can offer a more competitive salary to his assistant coaches. Dimikes really never wanted to leave HC but it made sense at the time. Great move for us. Young even more experienced coach who bleeds purple and is one hell of a recruiter. Love the move. Now on to a running backs coach!

DiMichele is an outstanding addition to the football staff !! He is coming back to where he belongs and wearing purple. His energy to recruit and bolster the players will be welcomed, a big loss for Lehigh as well. Coach Chesney keeps building the PROGRAM....
Also great to see Chesney attend the women's basketball game last night in support. He gets it.......

I'm also hearing DiMichele might also be the Recruiting Coordinator for HC. Smith was - but with being the OC and the OL Coach it would make sense to have someone take this over - DiMichele in this role is great.

Having DiMichele back is a great get for Holy Cross and a blow to Lehigh. He's a up and coming young coach and more importantly an alumnus.
Great addition to the staff.

Major kudos to Chesney not letting ego get in the way with DiMichele, Smith, and Vaganek and simply dismissing them because they were on Gilmore's staff (and also left to join Gilmore, in DiMichele's case) so he could have a staff of "his guys."
This is a very impressive staff of coaches with a great mix of guys who have an HC background, along with some much needed fresh blood that Chesney brought in (James, Grautski, etc.).

Ensuring Chesney's assistants are taken care of would be a more prudent financial choice than paying two Mens Basketball coaches concurrently for one year. Just saying.
