Aren't many players from Maine of either gender. Had subscriptions to both Down East Magazine and Yankee Magazine for several years and remember stories of small Maine towns, even island communities with basketball teams that went deep into the State Tournament with the whole town following them to Portland or Bangor, wherever they were playing, so they do take their basketball seriously up thar.

True, but the level of HS play is simply terrible. I did take notice that Breen plays her AAU for the Bay State Jaguars, a excellent program. As a whole, Maine does not generate a lot of D1 players, been a while since HC has had one I think.

The only good UMaine players definitely came from elsewhere (Rufus Harris, Rick Carlisle, Jeff Cross). Duncan Robinson's the only NBA Mainer.
I guess Breen must drive or get driven down from Maine on weekends to play in tournaments. That program's run by the mother of a Duke player from Bridgewater.

How about Maine native Cindy Blodgett who led the nation in scoring four years in a row, led the Black Bears to the NCAA tournament four years in a row, finished her career with 3005 points, and was the sixth overall draft pick in the WNBA, playing four years?
The exception that proves the rule?

No, the point was that in any given year, it is rare that more than 3 or 4 players get go on to play D1 ball. I believe that this past season there were 10 players in total across all 4 years playing in D1.

So, you agree, they don't produce a lot of D1 players. Didn't say they didn't have good players, just not a whole lot of them. Generally, it's a fair statement for nearly all the NE states.

To paraphrase Howard Schellenberger, it doesn't appear that the Umaine men's basketball program has put a fence around the state; the talented kids have gone and are going elsewhere.

Christina Pham, 5'7 PG, Nobles & Greenough HS, other offers, Delaware, St Joes, UMass, Harvard,BU /photo/1 Looking at the list of offers, why wouldn't this player say to Harvard "I accept" and be done with it? Why would two other large MA comprehensive universities, BU and UMass, have any hope of competing with Harvard?

Yeah, her offers from BU, Umass & Harvard date back to Nov/22. St. John's, Delaware & HC much more recent. I assume that before HC makes an offer they at least confirm some interest from the player. I would also keep in mind that she just finished her sophmore year, most of these "offers" should be considered only as the openning salvo in th recuiting proccess by the schools. Kids stall out in development, injuries, overrecruited etc. can change erverything. The only player I can recall that committed this early to HC and in fact went there is Ashley McLaughlin some 20+ years ago.
That's a fairly defeatist attitude for any school recruiting against Harvard including HC.
Yes, but how could you objectively advise a young person to attend BU or UMass over Harvard without out some individual factor, such as finances or family legacy, etc. that would tip the scales for the Terriers or Minutemen? It's possible, but I don't know of any undergraduate academic program at UMass or BU that is considered better than the same one at Harvard. For women's BB, it's hard to project one of the three programs being significantly better than the others during the four years of attendance. Holy Cross is sufficiently different than those other three large comprehensive MA universities. HC is a small liberal arts college where students are taught directly by highly qualified professors who are prioritizing teaching and not research or publishing, instead of graduate students fitting in a class between Union organizing meetings.🙂 HC is Catholic and Jesuit, etc. My other observation is these offers might be better termed "expressions of interest." Apparently they don't extend the "full faith and credit" of the offering institution. I haven't seen an offer letter but they must be loaded with weasel words.

Maybe one reform the NCAA could consider would be limiting scholarship offer letters to high school or transfer students who have applied and been accepted to that school.
Nah, that would make NCAA members appear too much like academic institutions.🙂

The player is not really allowed to accept it. There is always a catch, such as the player not be allowed to accept it until after they’ve made an official visit, which can’t come until late in their junior year. if not that, then, there is some other hook to it. As you say, if the player does not develop, the offer will quickly be off the table.

Offers include Harvard. I wonder if the Harvard and other admissions departments including Holy Cross reserve a spot in the class arriving in September 2025 while the offer is active? That doesn't seem likely but I wonder if an admissions department staff person at highly selective schools has to review the student's high school transcript and approve a coach issuing an offer before the coach does so? That doesn't seem likely either.
There was a kerfuffle of sorts several years ago with Ernie Floyd's daughter's admission status at Holy Cross and she ended up attending and playing very well at Assumption. I don't remember the details but I think it involved confusion between admissions and WBB of some kind. Confusion could be reduced if schools could only make athletic scholarship offers to students accepted for admission. That of course is unlikely to happen. Too close to an academics first policy by the NCAA.

While I don't have absolute direct knowledge, I would make an educated guess that the various teams in fact get "reserved spots" from Admissions. And, I would be shocked if athletic departments do not have to run a potential recruit past Admissions before they make an offer. Would be pretty embarrassing to the school to make and have an offer accepted and then HC says, "oh, sorry, your grades aren't actually good enough to come to HC. Just pretend we didn't offer you a spot."
As I've posted many times previously, Frank Vellaccio personally told me that (not in his role as interim president but) as provost/senior VP, that every single varsity athlete had to get his OK to be admitted to Holy Cross. Granted, he was not in Admissions per se but as chief academic, it needed his imprimatur. My guess also is that Frank first got Admissions' recommendation so he wasn't individually plowing through hundreds of files. And, no, I don't think he was joking or puffing himself up when he made that statement to me.

However, as I mentioned before, many offers at this stage and earlier are more like invitations to get better acquanted. There are very few "offers" that can be accepted prior to the late spring of a player's sophomore year at the earliest.
