While I don't have absolute direct knowledge, I would make an educated guess that the various teams in fact get "reserved spots" from Admissions. And, I would be shocked if athletic departments do not have to run a potential recruit past Admissions before they make an offer. Would be pretty embarrassing to the school to make and have an offer accepted and then HC says, "oh, sorry, your grades aren't actually good enough to come to HC. Just pretend we didn't offer you a spot." As I've posted many times previously, Frank Vellaccio personally told me that (not in his role as interim president but) as provost/senior VP, that every single varsity athlete had to get his OK to be admitted to Holy Cross. Granted, he was not in Admissions per se but as chief academic, it needed his imprimatur. My guess also is that Frank first got Admissions' recommendation so he wasn't individually plowing through hundreds of files. And, no, I don't think he was joking or puffing himself up when he made that statement to me. Thanks, I need reminders of things I've read before at this stage of the game. The literalist in me gets annoyed when I read about all these early offers that don't carry the full faith and credit of the offering school. But high school students also race on line to announce the offer now like was not possible before the growth of social media. Former Director of Admissions Ann Reardon got many mentions on this board, often being cited as one reason for poor performance of the FB program and other sports as well. Now the FB program is doing great. Does anybody have knowledge of whether admissions is easier to work with and more flexible with coaches after she left?

You are starting to sound a little like me when I've posted that I have little interest in offers and even verbals until and if the NLI is signed. (Not a lot, just a little )

Our first '25 offeree, Ava Black off the board, commits to Vanderbilt Seems like that is quite a reach for Holy Cross to offer someone going to Vanderbilt

Is there an NCAA penalty for offering a kid you don't get? She ended up with about 40 offers, but HC was one of the first few - long before it was obvious she was going to a school like Vandy. And there have been a number of girls with offers from schools like Vandy who ended up at much lower levels due to academics and other factors.

Started to get a bunch early summer 2023, including Marquette, Pitt & Purdue. Never hurts to take a shot.

HC is aiming high. More of a compliment than a failing to lose early offers to the SEC and ACC. Shows our departed recruiting coordinator could spot talent in the development stage. Let's hope it was mostly the head coach and we continue to get strong recruiting classes.

It is just wasting the coaching staff time calling, scouting, etc with players that will not be a lower level student athlete. MM's track record has been to win early at a school and then slack off.

She doesn't win last year without her recruits Berger and Flanagan. The cupboard is getting restocked nicely.

Fair point, but I doubt there was any certainty that she wouldn't be a PL player at the time of the offer. I suspect that once she started receiving offers by higher programs HC may have reached out to see if there was indeed continued interest, unlikely they invested a great deal of time beyond early summer. I am hoping that MM's record continues to improve. The incoming class looks to be pretty decent but '24 & '25 are going to be very important if the want to stay in the top 3 of the PL.

It is just wasting the coaching staff time calling, scouting, etc with players that will not be a lower level student athlete. MM's track record has been to win early at a school and then slack off. It doesn't waste much time, expecially with a local player. If it becomes obvious the player has no interest, then you just move on. Sometimes players surprise you and opt to go to a school at a lower level than their "best" offers. There have been PL players who had Big East offers.

So, are you saying that Holy Cross didn't really need to accept the Big East invitation? (shooting for at least 10 more pages in this thread. I have chummed the waters! )

I know most offerees will not come to HC, BUT in my opinion it is nice to see us raising our sights with the quality of the overall recruits we are pursuing,
