From the Hill: Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor spoke highly of colleague Justice Clarence Thomas during an event on Thursday, saying, “He is a man who cares deeply about the court as an institution.” Sotomayor, who is liberal, acknowledged during remarks at the American Constitution Society that while she often disagrees with the conservative justice, she believes that “we share a common understanding about people and kindness towards them”
“Justice Thomas is the one justice in the building that literally knows every employee’s name, every one of them. And not only does he know their names, he remembers their families’ names and histories,” she said. “He’s the first one who will go up to someone when you’re walking with him and say, ‘Is your son okay? How’s your daughter doing in college?’ He’s the first one that, when my stepfather died, sent me flowers in Florida,” she added. Sotomayor’s remarks come as some Democrats have urged Thomas to recuse himself from Jan. 6, 2021-related cases amid revelations that his wife, Ginni Thomas, had reportedly communicated with then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows in an effort to have the results of the 2020 presidential election overturned.

Seems like a really nice guy. Shame that his blatant bias and lack of ethics remain a blight on the SCOTUS.

I think that we all know that there are plenty of people whose outlook on law and policy is supportive of the "haves" but who are nonetheless kind and solitcitous of those who have fewer resources, education, and opportunities than they do. I think Justice Thomas might fall into this category. We are also aware of those whose outlook is much more focused on fixing inequality in all of its facets but who only want "the help" to cut the grass for the party in the Hamptons. We ought to listen to Mario Cuomo who told a Holy Cross audience:
Probably you'll never have to look into the face of an old man uneducated, ill, alone, in the winter, huddled on a heating grate in the midst of New York City's magnificence, or Detroit's or Chicago's. Where you will probably live, you'll probably never see any of that. There are suburbs and neighborhoods where you can enjoy what you've learned and absorb yourself in the ordinary work and triumphs and tragedies of your lives, and that sounds pretty good. Who could blame you if you did? The education the College of the Holy Cross has given you allows you to do that. It allows you to. But it doesn't encourage you to.

It’s nice to see the Supreme Court justices maintaining professional cordiality. There is voluminous precedent for that.
While I haven’t read about it in the press I am sure all of them were horrified with the very recent incident resulting in an armed gentleman arrested for attempted murder outside the (guarded) home of Justice Kavanaugh.

Always hilarious to be accused of condescension by someone who just called me "pathetically disgusting." Keep the hypocrisy coming, KY, it's your stock-in-trade after all.

Surprised to hear from you given that this isn't a political board any more and you don't contribute anything to any sports discussion; at least any I can remember.
Enjoy the Mets resurgence.

Justice Thomas' reputation will forever be tarnished by his wife's interaction with several of those who sought to overturn the 2020 election. She corresponded regularly with John Eastman, a former Thomas clerk, and as a consequence, has now been invited to an interview with the House Committee investigating the January 6 attack on the Capitol. (Eastman is the architect for Trump's legal strategy for overturning the election results, and after the Jan 6th attack, Eastman sought a pre-emptory Presidential pardon for his actions.) www.nytimes.com/2022/06/15/us/trump-emails-eastman-chesebro-jan-6.htmlEastman now says his communication about a 'heated fight' was based on a story in the right-wing "Epoch Times" that described a shouting match between Roberts and Thomas. The Supreme Court has said there was no such shouting confrontation as the Court was meeting virtually at that time because of Covid. Justice Thomas has had a long association with the Claremont Institute, where Eastman is Director of the Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence. (The Claremont Institute has no affiliation with the Claremont colleges (Pomona, Scripps, Claremont McKenna, etc.) nor with Chapman University, where Eastman was a faculty member until retiring several days after Jan. 6th.)

"Doctor" Eastman to you, Phreek! Don't all lawyers have a J.D.- Juris Doctor? but how many are referred to as "Doctor?"

"Doctor" Eastman to you, Phreek! Don't all lawyers have a J.D.- Juris Doctor? but how many are referred to as "Doctor?" Doctor Eastman has a PhD (in government) to go along with his J.D. The PhD was awarded by Claremont Graduate University, one of the Claremont colleges. There are five colleges and two graduate schools. The Claremont colleges have no association with the Claremont Institute.

Clarence Thomas may be quite engaging on a personal level. Supposedly, he has a great sense of humor punctuated by a hearty deep laugh. His past speaks for itself depending on what one believes. For the public the real Thomas is the Thomas who serves on the Court. His reality is defined by his decisions, his dissents, his written opinions as well as his public speeches & behavior in public forums. Currently, his political activities in attending certain meetings with his wife are under intense scrutiny. His decision-making on cases supposedly involving his wife's activities has come under scrutiny, too. He has been controversial from his confirmation hearings to today. Obviously there are issues of fairness in the treatment of Thomas. But, there are also relevant issues which some might honestly believe need to be examined. He & Ginni are entitled to a fair hearing & treatment. Let the public decide, Thomas' - victims or malefactors or neither. No doubt opinions will be polarized as is the rule these days. If any find this comment too political or unfair or upsetting please give a shout I will quickly delete. I do not want to lose my spot. Peace.

Dr. Fauci is a great man. He is a global leader whose influence extends far beyond the polarized shores of the US. He is much revered by millions around the world. No doubt a relatively tiny group of critics motivated by politics under the leadership of "tiny hands" is insignificant & unimportant. Very few outside their small bubble pay them any attention. I pay attention out of respect for all the Crusader alums on this board. His critics will be long gone and forgotten like dead bugs on a windshield. But the name Fauci will live on in glory.

The concurring opinion by Justice Thomas today swings for the fences. We will not be able to discuss this without getting into politics but the majority opinion was already known and the positions CT takes today have been hinted about before, but he is quite clear in how far he would go in his jurisprudence. No other justice joined his decision although some probably agree with him.
There will be plenty of coverage of this, of course. A good accessible analysis will be up on Scotusblog in a few hours.
