Thanks. No question DB worries me the most. Holding Smith is critical IMO, good player in key position and we need a lot more. For me DE is second most critical. TE seems to be jam packed for a position we don't throw to. Not sure we have enough $$ for another DE the caliber of Robinson. He’s likely the only DE that could push for run as a frosh. 23 season DE’s will be BV, Osahon, hopefully a 100% recovered Ross, Townsend and Reynolds all in competition to replace Kuz and Reich…BV obviously with the most snaps/experience. Not having Dobbs is the single reason for a lack of pressure compared to 21’ (Jake had ~10 sacks and 19 TFLs last season), either from the edge or A/B gaps. It gets lost on some what Jake did in our blitz schemes. Accounting for him freed up Liam A, Kuz and Reich even more. They are all having great seasons but being asked to do so much more without Jake.

You're right about Dobbs but we won't always have a Dobbs and someone in the rotation has to create pressure along with him. Last year with Dobbs and Anderson we had 2 guys who could get into the backfield, much harder with one. Maybe that guy's already here in Ross if healthy. I'm hoping Dippre at least gets a look at DE also. BV clearly has the edge on everybody.

Ross’ injury in the first game has been a season-ender?

Dippre will play earlier as a TE. He can use his natural strength and athleticism sooner there. He’s very raw as a DE; especially in a 3 man front where you need a lot of technical skills which come with experience vs good competition.

Through 10 games this year, we have completed 9 passes to TEs. In 13 games last year, we completed 14 passes to TEs. Unless the kid is the next Rob Gronkowski, that is not a position where we should really be tying up talented players/scholarship $.

This is a BIG if, but If getting certain talent on the roster is a potential issue for us do we consider switching looks on defense next year to match the depth and talent on the roster?

For what it’s worth — and I think it is relatively interesting but not significant (but I decided to post it anyway) — 247 Sports rates Comestro at 3* (80).

I’m high on this kid. This is one of the best HS conferences in So Cal. He started at CB his junior year and Safety his Senior year. Played against a ton of Power 5 QB’s and WR’s. Check out his evaluation tape below. Excellent instincts, footwork, can play in space, flies around and smacks people. Notice the quickness in his change of direction and the turn in his hips. www.hudl.com/video/3/13192733/61847414d225700cf0d91d4c

From a March 7 v 7 tournament that drew many top recruits with P5 offers.
Rancho Santa Margarita (Calif.) Santa Margarita defensive back Donovan Comestro is a physical boundary corner and plays with a nice edge in his game. He plays an aggressive game while showing the athleticism to open up and run with a receiver and shows very good corner instincts. Comestro shows up well on film and is coming off a strong junior season for the Eagles. He’s a big hitter in run support to complement his cover skills and shows the versatility to play anwywhere in the secondary.

At 23, I think the high level math would say we want to sign at least 26 and maybe 27 on Dec 21. I would think 2 more DB’s (likely CBs or another DC type that can play/has played both CB and S). Then 1 DE and/or 1 WR. That would be my best guess as of today.
