No. BBC totally wrong. His clip bad angle. The replay of the game clearly shows Asante caught the ball and ran t 2 steps inside the end zone with control of the ball and the defender tackles him outside the end zone.
Penalty. Not called.
Only defense for the no call was ref had a similar bad angle.

Impossible to have missed that play. Asante took a couple of steps after the catch and then got tackled, right in front of the ref All these posts about the officials are comical. Here is a good angle of the Asante play: The defender was on Asante’s heels and appeared to be trying to reach around with his left arm to knock the ball free (as far as I understand the rules, if he was successful in doing so, the call could have been incomplete because Asante didn’t “complete the catch” through the ground), then the defender lost his balance and dragged Asante down with him. Only other option for the defender was to immediately stop after running at full speed. As a point of comparison, here’s a play that ended with Dobbs body slamming a Merrimack player. It was either conveniently cut out from the video or long enough after the play that they didn’t need to keep running the video. You can start to see it happening at the end of the video. I ask, which was an easier play for the tackler to avoid: the Merrimack player coming to an immediate stop from full speed, or Dobbs not body slamming the Merrimack player? The second clip shows the entire stands during the play which gives the viewer a richer experience. It must come from HC's own video resources. Both NEC Front Row at Duane Stadium and ESPN+ at Fitton don't offer these camera angles. Not a huge deal but offers room for gradual improvement at both facilities for streaming productions.

The defender may have tackled AA a smidge late, but this happens frequently when an offensive player catches a touchdown pass in the endzone and runs out of bounds. In the flow of the play, this didn't strike me as a late hit.

Do you think it was easier for the Merrimack defender to avoid tackling Asante (a ball carrier) or Dobbs to avoid body slamming someone who didn’t have the ball?

Watch the replay. It runs from 42:10 to 42:50. TD scored at 13:54 of 2nd quarter. Also, look at this still photo: goholycross.com/sports/footballSOV, we can agree to disagree. This was not even close to a "smidge late" IMHO. BBC, I am not disputing whether or not Dobbs should have been called for a penalty. My point was the refs were not very good, not that they were biased. To SOV's point of following through, that's what I would have said about Schon's penalty. But, as I also posted, perhaps it was something he said, not something he did.

With the Asante touchdown, its almost like the ref gave up on the play once he confirmed possession....I mean, the kid practically ended up on the track. Impossible to have missed that play. Asante took a couple of steps after the catch and then got tackled, right in front of the ref The camera work was so bad combined with the late tackle I couldn't tell where the sideline was. That, and the high school-esque multi colored boundary lines* make for bad viewing. * cover the damn yellows, reds, etc. up when it's a football game.

For the posters closer to the coaching staff, we saw how the Merrimack players taunted our guys during the opening kick-off mocking our faux on-side kick.
However, after some thought, our usual mock on-side kick on virtually every kickoff last season (and maybe prior season) was abandoned last Friday night.
So, my questions:
1. What was the purpose of doing that last season(s)? It didn't fool anyone that I could tell. 2. If there was a legitimate reason for doing it, why has it been abandoned? New special teams coach? A Chesney decision? 3. What's the likelihood of seeing it again against Buffalo?

Thoughts of the game after getting a chance to watch it again (being able to rewind is everything): The Big Picture: Solid opening week performance against a capable opponent. As for the main topic post game (unsportsmanlike like penalties) 2/3 of the calls were a joke. These are Div 1 football players. It’s been referenced but after watching what other players/teams were allowed to get away with on Saturday made me even more pissed about the officiating. Regardless of the facility, this isn’t HS football. The two most egregious were the call against Schon (all he did was finish his block/pancake right at the whistle. It was a bang/bang play. Awful call at a crucial moment. The second one that was talked about was the “offsetting” call where a Merrimack player literally drove Spence into the ground a good 2-3 seconds after the whistle and Spence almost rolled into Dobbs’ knees (the way Ross was injured on the last play of the game). Spence had to be restrained by his teammates and probably explains why he was a bit excessive later on that incompletion (Still a lame call) A couple of the “illegal hands to the face” were likely justified but I couldn’t see them very well (Sluka’s 15 yd run that got called back) Thoughts on each postion: QB - Very good game by Matt. Mostly in his reads. Granted he had a clean pocket almost all night which allowed him to go thru his progressions but I would guess he made the right read 90% of the time. His ball still isn’t the prettiest but it was getting to where it needs to be for our WR’s to make a play. I worry against better DB’s and LB’s some of those tight underneath windows will close quicker. He threaded the needle on a couple beautifully but they were high risk throws. I’m still curious to see how he does when he sees pressure of has to throw without his feet set. Clearly he can and will always be able to make plays with his legs. The stat keeper inexplicably credited Joe P with one of Sluka’s 15 yd passes so Matt was actually 14/23 for 257 yds and Joe P 1/3 for 2 yds. I highly doubt it will be corrected. RB - as advertised among the 3. Oliver and Fuller ran hard down hill and Purdy a couple nice catches out of the back field. TE - Morris also as advertised. Blowing ends and LBs off the ball. Helmet Sticker to Hunter Lane who stepped up big time in his first collegiate action in lieu of an injured Petersen. He blocked well all night, had 1 reception and played a ton of snaps. We didn’t back away from our number 1-2 personnel sets which I thought we might so the coaches had confidence in him to step up. OL - A+ performance across the board. Like I said, gave Matt a clean pocket all night (didn’t give up one sack) and blew their front off the ball in downhill run. This group can be something special. DL - We ran a 3 man front all night so I watched Springer and Williams who both saw snaps at NG since I wasn’t sure what to expect with them. Both held their ground and Williams split a double team once which was really impressive. Kuz, Reich and Vags rotated as the DEnds and were flat footed against the run (what you ask). Pass rush by them was okay as they Kuz and Reich had a couple of good bull rushes but I worry about our pressures against better QBs. Granted we only rushed 3/4 guys most of the night and in doing that we aren’t expecting lots of sacks but rather playing for an incompletion. Reynolds INT was a result of Reich bull rushing the OL into the QB and knocking the QB’s arm as he threw. Perhaps we didn’t want to show to much. LB - Workman like performance by Dobbs and Anderson. Not high light reel plays but they also not a ton of chances. Dobbs was literally bench pressing 300 lb Gurads into the backfield on his A and B gap blitzes. Reich’ sack was actually a result of Zegeriotus having to avoid that and stepped up into Reich’s good edge rush. Bolden started the first series as the 3rd LB and Monte the 2nd. We ran a 3-2-6 the majority of the night after so not sure what the story with that. We desperately need one of those two step up and and play more snaps in a base 3-3. I would give a slight edge to Bolden in the limited snaps for both. DB - some good and not so good by this group. The six DB’s that saw most action were Smith, Haskins, Spence, Reynolds, Argys and Jarmo with Burns as the first reserve. Bad fits and missed tackles early by our safeties. Need to set the edge and allow Dobbs and Anderson to Chase inside the hashes. Jarmo’s first game and he played almost the all downs. He should improve. Terrell Prince will be back vs Yale but we really missed him in that defense and he’s out best run stopper (almost plays a hybrid LB in the box our dime package) and does the things I mentioned above very well. He will be missed this week against the Bulls Offensive sill positions. Our edge CB’s did an excellent job bracketing Jacari Smith in coverage as he only got open a couple times. He’s dangerous. What’s remarkable is that our first team D only gave up ~210 yards and 10 points when the exited the game with 3 minutes left. Both would have been under our totals for last year. I’m a big believer in nothing is as ever as good or bad as it seems the night of a game. I think the penalties and lack of big plays made many of us feel it was an average performance by the Defense. It was sloppy but the stats said we did what we set out to do. Time will tell as we settle in against better competition.

Perhaps we didn’t want to show too much to the Bulls. Will there be much in HC's playbook that HC will not yet have shown?

Not sure if it’s been pointed out yet, but Sluka was the recipient of this week’s Gold Helmet from the New England Football Writers Association
Holy Cross’ Sluka, St. Anselm’s Willoughby Named This Week’s Recipients Of NEFW/Grinold Chapter Gold Helmet Awards
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Holy Cross junior quarterback Matthew Sluka and St. Anslem College quarterback Drew Willoughby are this week’s recipients of the New England Football Writers Association Gold Helmet Awards presented by the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation.
Sluka, a native of Locust Valley, N.Y., and a graduate of Kellenberg Memorial High School, totaled 242 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns in the air, while also rushing for 102 yards and another touchdown to pace Holy Cross to a season-opening 31-17 victory over Merrimack on Friday, Sept. 2. Sluka's 242 passing yards marked the second-highest total of his career.
Willoughby, a native of Austin Texas, and a graduate of Westlake High School, was 30-for-42 for 349 yards through the air, hooking up for three touchdowns, as Saint Anselm College produced a 28-10 victory over Millersville University on Thursday. He also became just the seventh quarterback in Saint Anselm history to reach 3,000 career passing yards, entering the day just 197 yards away from that milestone.
For the eighth straight year, the Jack Grinold Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation is the presenting sponsor for both the weekly and end-of-year Gold Helmet Awards presented to student-athletes from FBS, FCS, Division II and Division III institutions throughout New England.

DId anybody else watch the Buffalo-MD game? Efg72 I watched a good bit of it. Maryland handled Buffalo but Buffalo has a big Oline and some athletes so we need to be on our game. This is Buffalo’s home opener so they’ll be ready to play. My hope is like UConn they will be looking past us.

In summary, HC kicked Merrimack's ass? A 14 point win is never kicking anyone's ass... HC should have won this one 40-10!! Playbook was roughly 6 plays if you watch all the film. Not sure if it was dummy downed because we knew we were better or we didn't want to show much to Buffalo. If we show up next week with an offensive play sheet like this we will be in big trouble against an FBS program. JMO

In summary, HC kicked Merrimack's ass? A 14 point win is never kicking anyone's ass... 10 more first downs. 222 more yards of offense. 9+ minute advantage in time of possession. I know you didn’t actually watch the game but we kicked them around pretty good despite the garbage time touchdown and shooting ourselves in the foot with penalties and missed kicks. Had more of a 35-10 feel than a 31-17 feel. But, you do you boo.
