HC has not had a roster this loaded in a long time. A truly great job bringing in talent and putting them into the hands of a great S&C coach. But the current lack of discipline and game management/over-coaching (e.g. putting in an ice cold Pekansky for Sluka on 3rd and goal from the 9) are going to hold HC back from becoming a legit top 10-15 program. I agree with dharry on Smith calling a great game in his first time as an OC. I wish they would unplug HCBC’s headset when we have the ball and just let it rip. Pulling Sluka there was very strange. It almost looked like he was removing himself from the game as he ran to the sideline right after the previous play ended.

As for the Merrimack score in the final minute, they would have had another TD but for an immaculate interception.

Chesney could have burned a time out there, might have been worth doing.

That “whimpy” Merrimack QB probably would have needed an ambulance to get off the field.

I might disagree on the Sideman -Pessansky evaluation, but given the number of plays he was given the coaches might agree with you. The kid from Chicago might enter the mix as well

I really don't see any reason for Sluka to be replaced at QB this year......

I really don't see any reason for Sluka to be replaced at QB this year...... Indeed. While nobody was happy with the interception, he passed for 242 yards on 22 attempts and was given a quarterback rating of 172. Oh, and I think he ran for 100+ yards

The kid from Chicago might enter the mix as well I did not agree with Sluka still being in the game with HC up by 31-10, and the clock winding down. Right now, IMO, Sluka is the weakest link --if he were to go down, I view the backups as unproven. Not so last year, with Siderman.

As for HC being flagged for taunting/unsportsmanlike conduct, I didn’t see anything that warranted a flag. If the officials were looking for ticky-tack infractions, how about the game’s opening kickoff where Merrimack copied the (silly) fake onside kick that we’ve done too frequently, and then each Merrimack player pointed at (TAUNTED!) our guys.

The umpiring crew was awful tonight imo....Merrimack was often the instigator and we were baited into personal fouls etc...it is what it is...take the W and move on

On TD pass to Assanti, he ran out of the end zone untouched and then was tackled. No penalty?

His helmet came off. During the live feed it was very difficult to see that on the replay, but if you check out the replay on NEC's site, you can clearly see the helmet come off. No way Sluka voluntarily takes himself out of a game. Not sure how this picture would display here. If you click on the picture, it should expand. ![](//storage.proboards.com/6424393/thumbnailer/aXQcAhfUgfixtGifhfNs.png)

My two (or three) cents… 1. Might have been one of the chippiest games I have ever seen. The officiating crew let it get out of hand early and never had the game under control. That said, some of the undisciplined penalties on the Cross were inexcusable!! Inexcusable!! 2. I hope our microphone system for the referee works flawlessly at Fitton. It is brutal when it does not work 3. Without seeing replay not sure, but holds for the kicker never seemed clean. Snap issue? Holder issue? Don’t know but did not always seem clean. 3. I know a win is a win - but that certainly did not look like the 16th ranked team in FCS. But that OL was immense last night. Clean pocket, power run blocking. That unit is awesome. Hc80 how about we enjoy the victory instead of questioning wether the team looked like a nationally ranked team. First game of the season and just adjusting to game conditions. Relax and take each game one at a time.

Final points from me re: officiating- I, too, was looking for a flag after the very late tackle of Asanti well after his TD. Nothing. As to the taunting penalty on us after Merrimack’s incompletion at the goal-line, that flag was thrown not by the official on the HC sideline closest to the play, nor by the official in the defensive backfield, but by the official in the offensive backfield - at around midfield!! As to the missed kicks by Ng, I had a decent vantage point on each, and yes, neither was well set for him.

Game Stats: www.espn.com/college-football/matchup/_/gameId/401435072Very balanced offense Patrick Haugney never touched the field. Clearly need to clean up the “lack of discipline” penalties. Those can and will be more costly in closer games. This said, I don’t recall any holding penalties, any offsides so I think this area can/will be quickly cleaned up. Quite a play by Hunter Burns. Matt Sluka, clearly a special talent. Jalen Coker as well. Good to see many kids getting meaningful P/T. Overall stats indicate that the game was not as close as the final score but how often have we seen a team that plays to the level of the competition. A common occurrence. A solid W. Clean up the sloppiness. Accentuate the strengths. Achieve then exceed the potential. Great days to be a Crusader. LET’S WIN. #Commitment #Excellence

Announcers didn't seem to be aware of rule change this year which makes it a penalty for a ball carrier to fake a feet-first slide

It is a very strong good team. First game misses are quite common. Coaches will clean it up. Motivation is sky high. Team is on a crusade.
