Any European team that gives up a tie (or loses) to the US causes apoplexy among true football fans. It is good to see the USA in World Cup competition again.

I'm not the biggest soccer fan but I have a son and friends who are, so I watched a good deal of the game. The US totally dominated the first half, but Wales came out and played a physical second half. They scored on a penalty kick after a stupid penalty by an American player. The win was there to be had. It will now be a challenge for the US to get out of their group (England, US, Wales, Iran).

Any European team that gives up a tie (or loses) to the US causes apoplexy among true football fans. That would have been more true 20 years ago. Only 11 European nations, out of more than 45, rank ahead of the U.S. in FIFA's rankings. U.S. is ahead of all of eastern Europe (except Croatia) and all of Scandinavia. Also well ahead of Scotland and Ireland..

Argentina put three balls in the net which were called back for offsides. None were debatable. Their only goal was a PK by Messi.

When I explained that almost every secondary school had a soccer team their question was typically..."Then why aren't their Cup teams better?" TJhdere is still (regardless ofgtalent) a long-standing distain for US soccer (OK, football) teams throughout the FIFA world.

I have a hard time believing that these are very informed fans that you're speaking to. In addition to the rankings, there are more USMNT players playing in the top UEFA leagues than ever before -- Pulisic, McKinnie, Adams, Aaronson, Reyna, Dest, Robinson, Weah, and Musah are all key contributors if not outright starters for clubs in the EPL, Bundesliga, La Liga, Ligue 1, and Serie A. The US team is still very young, but there's a great foundation that could pay big dividends in '26.

All you say is true. However, you seem to underestimate the VERY low opinion that some European fans have of the US team. It has been that way for many years a nd is slow to change.

The USMNT stood with their hands over their hearts for the national anthem. The USWNT knelt for the anthem. Thank you men. Please delete this before it becomes a thing. Fortunately, it seems like the kneeling fad is over.

Tie v England. Must beat Iran to advance. And as one of my sons texted me, if they can’t beat Iran , they don’t deserve to even be here.

Very good game today for the US. A random observer would not have known which team was the one which was heavily favored.
Iran will be without its captain who received his second yellow card of the tourney today and is thus unavailable for the next game. Should make the US heavier favorites than they otherwise would have been. Still have to play the game. I am certain Iran would like nothing more than to eliminate the US.
