Not to be a Debbie Downer but this win might well be a one off. There just won't be too many games when both Batch and Octave knock down that many 3s. Batch seems to be a very streaky shooter, Tonight he was torrid and happy for him. Next game, probably not. Same for Octave. It helped we were playing BU, who is greatly underperforming. Let's see how we do in the next 3 or 4 games before we start feeling some corner has been turned. That's the way it's going to be. Gates is the star of this team. If the team is going to be successful a couple of other guys have to step up. Tonight it was Batch and Octave. Maybe Saturday it will be Montgomery and Kenney. The problem is that with the lack of depth, there aren't a ton of options for the step up guy. Throw in the fact that I think Dorsey is about 1 for 20 since missing the Lafayette game with an injury and that list of options gets really short if Batch is having an off night. (disclaimer - even a less than 100 percent Dorsey and his defensive intensity are critical to any success this team will have). With few options for a step up guy, the likelihood is greater there are going to be clunker nights when no one steps up. Hopefully not in March

Hate to say it because I was one who voted to move on from Nelson after last season and I was ready to move on from him this season after the Siena game, but I have a funny feeling that Coach Nelson may be able to convince Kit to keep him around a little longer. I still don't think Nelson is the guy but would love for him to prove me wrong. He does have this team playing hard so there's something to that I guess.

Go HC.com says that Joe O’s 7 threes ties a school record But it does not say whom Joe tied. Guess they did not want to list the six. Most recent was Malachi Alexander in 2016. First was Ray’s fave, Rob Feaster. 7 Rob Feaster at New Hampshire, 11/25/1994 7 Kevin Hamilton vs. Chattanooga, 12/19/2005 7 Devin Brown vs. Navy, 2/16/2011 7 Cullen Hamilton vs. Sacred Heart, 11/13/2013 7 Robert Champion at Lehigh, 2/15/2016 7 Malachi Alexander at Sacred Heart, 12/21/2016

Getting a significant commitment from a big before he has to sit down with Kit might help his chances.

Speaking of bigs, Kenney's game within 5-7' of the hoop, has really advanced. Looks like he and the staff has put a lot of work in.

NAD, he might need two additional recruits A pure point guard that defends An old school PF- 6'7- 6'9, who rebounds and scores inside. I was hoping Kenney would develop into that player- perhaps he still might, but those skill are a critical need once Gates graduates.

At this very late stage of the high school recruiting season, these goals are pretty unrealistic. The portal may be our only hope, but that has been not helpful recently.

Without our very rare 3 point barrage(best in 4 years), our continued abominable free throw shooting could have doomed us once again, despite BU’s ineptitude.

Good road win. BU tried to sit inside in the first half to stop Gates. They doubled him a lot, but with Batch and Joe O knocking down 3’s they had to change their D in the 2nd half. More pressure outside gave Gates room to work. And HC hit some big 3’s at the end, Bo and Joe most notably..All 8 players were pretty solid last night, and Coach Nelson did a good job getting platers some rest around media TO’s ..
A lot of improvement from the players, have to give the staff an Attaboy.. Caleb is coming along, he is getting consistent around the hoop and has been ready to receive passes for layups.. Batch is not only shooting it well, he is playing much better D.. Bo stepped up his D..Kirkland is upping his minutes, solid play, no turnovers, plays good D and can rebound a little.. Tse had been a scorer when needed, he has that knack to get to the rim..

Problem for CBN might be timing. He may need to show Kit a prize get by the middle of March. Will be interesting.

At this very late stage of the high school recruiting season, these goals are pretty unrealistic. The portal may be our only hope, but that has been not helpful recently. Agree Although we have benefitted from the portal to a degree, and we might not have been able to get commitments to fill some of the holes on the roster, it raises issues about the strategy behind our recruiting and retaining players the last three years. It appears as if we took the best available players regardless of what role they might play or was needed to improve the roster I realize our record for the past five or more years has made recruiting very difficult, defections and injuries have complicated things, but at some point we need to acknowledge that is the reality of where the program has been for the past six or seven years. Nelson walked into a very tough situation and lost his roster to the portal-- for what reason(s) we might never know- but it didn't help him turn things around. More importantly while the players have never quit and they continue to play hard, most of them haven't developed as much as needed to make up for the gaps. I will let others decide and comment on what might happen or is needed in the future. Hard to believe Lent doesn't start for a few more weeks.

Hard to believe Massey had BU as a 9 point favorite with a 78% chance to win. I think they've had some injury issues, but who hasn't. They looked pretty unimpressive. I always thought Joe Jones could coach but his team looks a bit undisciplined.

Joe Octave might disagree with that The additions we made from the portal isn't the issue as much as the role the portal has played in destroying the roster and our efforts to improve. Overall, it hasn't been helpful! In the last four years, 15 scholarship players have opted for the portal prior to graduation. That is horrible and I agree the transfer bug has hurt HC more than it as helped. The comment was made that it's late to get good high school kids and the only hope for a big guy for next year might be the portal and that has not been helpful recently. In that context of finding help for 2023-24, the portal has been helpful recently. I am not saying that every kid brought in was a home run but I also don't think every kid brought in through the portal recently was a strike out either

We have beaten teams ranked 301 (2x), 200, 337, and 289 in the PL. I'm nowhere close to being won over or thinking Nelson should return next season. He absolutely gets credit for coaching the kids who are left standing up and motivating them -- this team plays hard. But this is a small blip on an otherwise horrendous body of work and I've seen enough to come to the conclusion he isn't the right man to lead the program. Lest we forget Nelson entered this season without being able to round out the roster with 13 scholarship players, and then had two scholarship kids quit the team.

Oh, I completely agree with you and still think HC needs to move on from Coach Nelson. I'm just not sure Kit thinks the same.

The next eight games will determine a Langel type decision similar to Colgate ….. retain or dismiss.
If HC plays like last night…..

Tse and Wilbar were my examples I still shake my head, finding it hard to believe that we would offer scholarships to these two transfer players. I do understand the argument that, in desperation, we needed a point guard, but I remain unconvinced

Unless he has an additional year remaining on the contract, I would say it will take him winning a minimum of five of the remaining regular season games and getting to the semi-finals for that to be the case.
After all, there is no replacement for Gates, on or committed to the roster, and it is quite possible that next season will be a step or two backward in terms of wins and losses.

Huge credit to Nelson and his staff for getting the team to play hard every game, and its nice to see that the team has found an identity of sorts, but the last four years has been a disaster so I really hope that KH makes the decision to move on. HC can do much better.
