The next eight games will determine a Langel type decision similar to Colgate ….. retain or dismiss. If HC plays like last night….. The HC decision would be nothing like Colgate’s decision. Langel had very good teams in his third and fourth seasons at Colgate. Colgate extended his contract at that point, it was a no-brainer. He had just had consecutive seasons where his team was significantly better than the average PL. team, and they finished 2nd in the PL just before his extension.

Unless he has an additional year remaining on the contract, I would say it will take him winning a minimum of five of the remaining regular season games and getting to the semi-finals for that to be the case. I have just been assuming that he had another year after this year. Most PL head basketball coaches have always been given five year contracts.

The fifth year is "extend or cut bait." Either HC gives him a multi-year deal or terminates him.

Agree with you and I believe this is his final year but heard, from a non- HC friend which is not close to being confirmed comment he might have received a one-year Covid extension from MB before his departure. Still believe this is his final year of the contract.

I would be surprised if he got an extension AND this was the final year of his contract, which would mean the original was only a three year deal

Colgate was 12-6 in Langel's sixth season (second place finish in the PL), were ranked around 180 by Pomeroy, and had a top 100 offense nationally. Langel also had shown the ability to bring transfers in (probably realized he wasn't going to have success building that program exclusively with kids out of high school). Nelson is nowhere near where Langel was in year four.

Again, likely another phantom memory but was pretty sure the word was when he was hired that Nelson either got (or many just assumed) a 5 year contract. If it's only a 4 year contract, that'd make Kit's decision a lot easier with no buy-out.

Without going into the accuracy of our sources/speculation and only talking about basic math. . . IF Coach Nelson started at HC with a 5 year contract AND IF he and the school negotiated a mulligan for the 2020-21 COVID season, then yes. There would be two years left after this season

The only people who perhaps know what the obligations are likely to include some in the Administration, the AD and his staff, Nelson, his family, and maybe the assistants. Unfortunately, we don't follow the practices of public schools where we could find it on the internet

Who came up with the idea that coaches get an extra Covid year? That was an NCAA decision for players. If a team had a truncated season due to Covid and the coach wasn't getting paid his/her full salary, that MIGHT make sense. Why on God's green earth would a coach get an extra year? Sheesh! I really got into the wrong business.

There were already plenty of signs in the abbreviated 2021 season that Nelson was struggling in the job.
An extension would have been more understandable if the original deal was a 4-year contract. Extending a five-year deal before/during/after year 2, when there was absolutely no urgency, Nelson had zero leverage to ask for one, and there were already signs that he was a bad fit.... man, that would be an egregious unforced error by Blossom.

At this point speculation about an extra year extension because of COVID is nothing more than an unconfirmed rumor

I really got into the wrong business. My thinking exactly. Coaches got full pay and reduced burden of meet and greets with alumni and fans, significantly less travel away from home, fewer games to prepare for and practices to conduct and more time with their families. The only downside they suffered was making too much to qualify for full stimulus checks that came with a nice note from the POTUS at the time. They were not victims.

Remember a few years when there were comments about the previous coach and the need to consider a change? He guided Holy Cross to a record of 58-73 and an NCAA Tournament in his four years at Holy Cross.
Today, the best case would be 34-77 if HC would win out through the PL tournament and lose a 1-16 game.
Realistically and trying to be optimistic, say we have ten games left, and we win half. That puts us at 29-81
What do we do, or more importantly, how does Kit respond, and does it matter whether this is the last year or if two years are remaining?

The fifth year is "extend or cut bait." Either HC gives him a multi-year deal or terminates him. I acknowledge their existence but instinctively question these unwritten rules in sports. Assuming a five year contract, I would not extend at the end of this season barring a miraculous run in the NCAA tournament, but if the team continues to improve and play hard and wins a game or two in the PLT I wonder if the downside to playing out the final year of the contract without an extension next season is worth paying a second head coach salary for a year. If B.U. was the high point of the season, cut bait.

I was the one who spoke with a friend in Boston who follows HC but has no connection to the school. He is a BC grad, and that is something he heard. At best, it is a wild rumor, and I only raised it because there was absolutely no transparency on the original contract in terms of length or salary.Salary is easy enough to run down from a 990 I guess
from 2018 numbers on p. 21 Head Basketball Coach $386, 921

Would be almost the same YoY improvement in PL record for first 4 years. To say it would be nothing like Colgate’s decision is simply wrong.

Well if we make the decision they made in our case it would be horrific. I have requested those in Rome say a special mass for us-they laughed but said they pray for success for all Jesuit institutions because of Pope Francis. There is hope, and prayer is often the answer.

So Carmody's last full year compensation was $386K. That was for a coach with a couple of decades of D-1 head coaching in well compensated leagues, IL and Big Ten.
Do you think MB secured a healthy reduction for HC when an entry level head coach was hired?
