Well, well before your time, we didn't worry about such things on Fitton Field because:
1. There was no Luth/Hart (but in days gone by graduation was at Worcester Auditorium), so no on-campus alternative 2. Fitton grass just wasn't as beautiful as now and people didn't worry about those kinds of things (no, they had already given up leather helmets, before you ask)
That said, I agree with your observation that if an inch of rain fell, why screw up the field when you don't have to do so?
As a reminder, with all the new and expanded facilities, all reunions will take place on one weekend instead of splitting them in two because of the larger/better facilities. So, maybe graduations will be back on campus with Luth as a back-up? Just not next year as I've been invited and already told it will be at the DCU again.

1+ inches of rain fell on Friday between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM on Friday. As Phreek said, 2000 chairs and the stage for the altar would not have been optimal for the field. So you're telling me that it is possible to prepare two locations - one indoor and one outdoor - for large scale events like Mass of the Holy Spirit, Baccalaureate Mass and ... oh I don't know ... graduation? My recollection is that the indoor field in Luth will seat 6500. The architects had to do life safety calculations with respect to exit door capacity. However, I think the issues are now more about parking capacity and the post-ceremony buffet. If Smith Field seating is increased to 3,000, and a turf field installed, they could hold commencement at Smith Field with Luth as a backup. Some years ago, they were considering a parking garage on top of the hill. More parking spaces will apparently be sacrificed for the new residence hall between Prior and Figge.

Based on the value of construction permits issued (about $7 million), add the land acquisition costs, architects fees, and construction and site costs for activity that does not require a building permit (e.g., landscaping, street and utilities), and the new Jesuit residence cost north of $8 million. I am sure it is nicely appointed on the inside. So prospectively, a good investment for a future Phreek Out Inn.

The latest map of the College includes the two new townhouse residences on City View. As for the new Jesuit residence, it is cleverly disguised as a grove of trees; i.e., there is no residential home for the Jesuit community to be found on Mt. St. James.
Perhaps this is a consequence of the residence being a nameless building. And I don't want to make too much of this, it's not like denying the existence of the Jesuit presence has some deeper, greater philosophical meaning.

I was in Worcester today to attend a funeral of a classmate, so I decided to view the progress of the townhouses. The grass from the seeding last week is sprouting with a few noticeable spots the could use additional cultivation. All in all this application seems to be successful. Of note regarding CityView Street. There is additional demolition on the south side of the street. #2 CityView has been demolished with a Caterpillar Backhoe on site, as well as it appears #10 CityView is also a vacant lot. Would not be surprised to see #12 next to go. Unfortunately by the time I drove down the street the construction personnel had departed for the day. Are there plans for additional demolition this year on properties owned by the College? If so what is the timeline and the planned disposition of the land? Phase 2 of the townhouses or the site of another dormitory? The space between Figge and Prior will be relatively tight to build a new facility while extremely compromising on campus parking.

From Google Streetview, the image below is of #2, the three decker, on the right, with #4, and #4A also in view. goo.gl/maps/waumEddLWCtZAAp86From Google aerials, the contractor appeared to be using #4, 4A, #6, and #8 for staging and a construction office. If you drive up City View on Streetview, the contractor use of these properties on the south side of City View is evident. goo.gl/maps/rXPhFbqCr6JoiBQH8Demolition of a property requires a permit from the city. No permits have been applied for by HC for any HC-owned property of the even numbered side of City View (the south side) since 2017. The permit application listings are updated frequently, and I suppose it is possible that a demolition permit was applied for and is not yet posted. If HC intended to pave these properties, an application for such would be reviewed by the City's planning board because of stormwater runoff.

As of late yesterday afternoon, either my lying eyes have deceived me….granted I will be having eye surgery soon, or a Star Trek cloaking device has been deployed around #2 to make it disappear during the brief moments I was on CityView St. I will verify again when next on campus, this Saturday to see if any more buildings on the south side have disappeared this week.
Has anyone else recently taken a drive down CityView than can report on building status?

goo.gl/maps/SnYsdEP4Fgfwr7zR7^^^The HC-owned house on the right, with the white car in the driveway was used as the construction office by the general contractor for The Jo, and the Prior. (Same general contractor.) Post construction, the house was returned to HC for HC use. (At some point, the utility poles need to be taken down and replaced by underground conduit.) It is HC's practice to demolish 'three deckers' that it has bought over the years, e.g., see the clearing out of Caro St. It is prohibitively expensive to make these dwellings fire resistant, because of their balloon construction; i.e., all wood, no fire stops between the floors; and word porches. It is likely, IMO, that 99 College (at the corner of Kendig) and recently acquired by the College will be demolished. goo.gl/maps/1ff8nryTHCrTraFG8^^^ 99 College

The townhouses are beautiful. A very far cry from Lehy 337.

Any one remember the silverfish that inhabited Alumni in the late 1960’s, and the swinging doors in Beaven?
Hope to live to see the Easy Street Dorms demolished and replaced.

Holy smokes. Beautiful. No snow piling up inside the windows unlike days from long ago. Easy Street dorms are an eyesore unlike the beauty of the older Alumni, Beaven, Carlin & Wheeler. Would be great if new dorms could be built with the same type of exterior beauty and all the modern spacious interior accommodations.

Interesting. Take the second Phreek link, go up Caro and make a right up College Street. Make a left on what is labeled "Upper Campus" but now Mahaney Way. Then when you get to Hogan, do a 180 turn and you will miraculously see the old Fieldhouse until you get about halweay back down and . . . . voila - The Jo! I think this is actually a time machine from Back to the Future!
