New England college hoops was quite special in the 60’s and 70’s, especially in the ECAC Tourney era of ‘75 to ‘79. It’s really a shame the rivalries between PC, URI, BC, HC, UMass, UConn and Fairfield are almost all dead. The only ones still alive are PC-URI and PC-UConn. Even if some of them play each other once in a blue moon like PC and HC, the game has little feel like the days of yore. Too bad. It's nice that PC, perhaps due to external pressures in RI; has kept its rivalry w/URI going. 7662 attended this past season for PC at URI at the Ryan Center. A pre-season exhibition game of Assumption at PC drew 3556. Everything Cooley touched turned to gold.

Coach Paulsen has already changed the landscape of Holy Cross Men's basketball! His Twitter account is alive and positive, his showing up at the spring football game and getting involved, are steps this program has needed... I wonder what Coach Ralph Willard thinks of the hiring???

I met Coach Paulsen during my visit last week to the Spring game. He gets the HC basketball history. He also understands the relationship between HC basketball and HC football when it comes to recruiting. He is very engaging and extremely bright and quick witted. The perfect guy to recruit and coach HC kids. Great job KH!!

And I think he "gets" that he has to stay on the good side Crusader Super Fan, Non Alum Dave.

Looks like we are getting back to some fundamentals. Very needed.

How much time does the NCAA permit coaches to be on the floor with the players at this time of the year ?

I think part of the limitation is the number of players. No 5 on 5 scrimmages. More individual workouts. Note there weren't too many different players in that video, even in the background

Moving 1970's quote over from the football section to here --
Paulsen's teams at Bucknell were among the best in the country at protecting (not turning over) the ball, and among the worst at forcing turnovers.
Speaks to his philosophy about not beating oneself on offense and not gambling on defense. Of note, might be a direct correlation between not forcing turnovers on defense, but being a very good rebounding team, as his Bucknell teams ranked very high in that department.
Year / Offensive TO% rank / Defensive TO% rank
2015 / 60 / 347 2014 / 72 / 346 2013 / 2 / 347 2012 / 86 / 331 2011 / 23 / 290 2010 / 35 / 221 2009 / 149 / 337

I think the defensive strategy of letting your opponent get only one shot and making sure it’s not a great shot is a sound one at a place like HC.

I love his use of "violently"..It really gets the point across..Something I learned late in my coaching experience..Sprint vs run was a good one to get players to understand..don't catch a rebound, RIP IT AWAY...Don't drive tot the hoop, explode to the rim.....

It should also prove interesting to see how a former D-3 player's team does compared to a former star D-1 player's team. "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach." I'm betting on the teacher.

I don’t want to get my hopes up that we’ll have an historic first time ever agreement but it sounds suspiciously like we may be of like minds.🤷🏻♂️

How well did Paulsen do as a HC without a future NBA player?

How well did Paulsen do as a HC without a future NBA player? 399-263 if you exclude the 4 Muscala years at Bucknell. Hopefully we get a cake for the big “400th Win Without Mike Muscala” celebration in November.

How well did Paulsen do as a HC without a future NBA player? Do you mean the future NBA player that he successfully recruited? What agenda do you have? The world wonders...

When I was in high school we had a gym teacher who became an assistant principal, so we extended Woody's aphorism Those who can do. Those who can't teach. Those who can't teach, teach gym. Those who can't teach gyms ... administrate.

No sightings of our big guys, LC or MR, in the limited pics or videos of practice. Hope their respective rehabs are progressing nicely!

It should also prove interesting to see how a former D-3 player's team does compared to a former star D-1 player's team. "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach." I'm betting on the teacher. Bill Russell was a very good coach when he had himself on the team. Without the basketball GOAT on the team, he was a mediocre coach KC Jones earned 12 NBA championship rings, eight as a player, two as an assistant coach and two as a head coach and had a career .674 winning percentage as an NBA head coach. Yet because he was relatively reserved, didn't pump his own tires, and possibly because he was black, he received criticism that he was just lucky to have players like Bill Russell and Larry Bird and wasn't a real factor himself. But throw in two NCAA championship rings to make fourteen years of winning the last game of the season and of course he was a factor in the winning and an excellent coach. Coach Paulsen falls under the Bill Parcells quote: "You are what your record says you are." His record says he is a winner.

Congrats to all Crusader fans as you guys easily won the unusually large off-season Head Coach derby this year. Coach Paulsen will have the HC program moving vertically in no time. You all have suffered through a dismal stretch but your admin made a strong play to restore order and it will give you a program to be excited about soon. Enjoy the good times.
