For Bison Christy Mathewson Red Ruffing Eddie Lopat Grover Cleveland Alexander Cy Young Not correct.you’d think Young would be correct because he won more than 500 games but he did not reach MLB until age 23

Brunet did have the losing record but did not play as a teenager or 40 YO Further hints: the “easy one”, the foreign-born one, was not burn in the baseball hotbeds of the Caribbean or Latin America. I sat behind home plate once when he was pitching and the pitch for which he was famous was, indeed, something to behold. The other guy that I guessed correctly played only in the AL and pitched in the World Series for three teams. He was 5-0 in the WS The third guy played from the late 1970’s to the early 2000’s

Lefty, arguably one of the top 10 pitchers in MLB history, toiled in the minor,as a star for many years and did not win his first MLB game untilage25 So think Red Sox of the teens and,, easier to remember, the Yankees of the 1920's.for our other HOFer

Waite Hoyt.

Waite Hoyt did have the teenage win but did not play as a 40 year old. Hoyt, indeed, was a teammate of the Babe on both the Red Sox and the Yankees but the guy we are looking for is another starting pitcher, a Hall of Famer. The Yankees had 11 former Red Sox on their 1920's teams. This pitcher got his teenage win with the Philadelphia A's, was on the Red Sox from 1915 to 1922, then with Babe on the Yanks from 1923 to 1933, then went back to the Red Sox and recorded a win as a 40YO in 1934.There is a fascinating biography of him on the baseball-reference website that may interest you once we reveal his name.

Should be obvious, but isn't. Damn.
Dates don't sound right for Herb Pennock (don't recall that he pitched for the A's, either) . . .

Late to this, but if we're thinking early Sox, what about Joe Wood Wood was finished as a pitcher in his 20s, iirc. Had a good second act as an outfielder.

Late to this, but if we're thinking early Sox, what about Joe Wood Smokey Joe had the teenage win but with the move to the outfield and a shortened career his last pitching win came at age 25.

The third guy played from the late 1970’s to the early 2000’s This might be a reliever, methinks.

The last guy is our peripatetic right hander who pitched from 1978 to 2002 (one of those rare four decade players) whose two best seasons were 1991 as a Dodger and 1992 as a Cub. Made his only all star team in 91. Aside from those two years (went 30-18) he was a sub .400 pitcher. Pitching for Arizona in 2001 he threw 3shutout innings against the Yankees in the World Series.
