Well, it snowed a little last night and it was 28 degrees when I took my dog out this morning, but it is Opening Day. Here is the always tricky George Will quiz. I felt like I was able to narrow a lot down to two answers but still only got only 17 right. There seemed to be more NL questions than AL, so I am going to blame my poor showing on that (whether it is true or not.) www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/interactive/2023/george-will-2023-baseball-quiz/As everyone knows, there are rule changes as well www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/35631564/2023-mlb-rule-changes-pitch-clock-end-shift-bigger-bases I like the 15/20 second pitch clock and the need for the batter to be ready with 8 seconds left. I don't like the limits on pickoff throws. Sure, base stealing is fun, but I am concerned it will be too easy, especially with the larger bases. I am opposed to the no shift rule and am really opposed to the requirement that infielders start with their feet on the dirt. Go Sox, although I have a lot of questions about this team. PLAY BALL

I don’t understand how limiting pick off attempts will work.
What happens when the pitcher has reached the limit. Can’t the base runner get out to a huge lead with zero risk of being picked off?
Am I missing something here?

Am I missing something here? At some point, the runner is getting too greedy and will get picked off. It's only a balk if they don't get an out or the runner doesn't advance on the throw.

Seems the Red Sox fans are happy to talk about anything other than the 2023 baseball season..

Everyone strikes out. It was 40 degrees out and Judge hit a rocket, and Gleyber hit a bomb. Bullpen was clean sheets. Gotta love it.

You do indeed. Total number of runs allowed by the two New York teams = 0. That is not a bad start.

26.
As far as the Sox go, the two pitchers most fanatics complained the most about them bringing back were Brasier and Ort; and they both sucked yesterday. But cheaply.
They'll still score a decent number of runs but not hit very many homers.

Wasn’t sure where to put this but some good cross-marketing between the WooSox and HC.

Watched the Yankees loss to the Giants. I thought the new rules were excellent. Game moved along crisply. Pitchers pitched. No more standing on the mound seemingly endlessly before deciding to throw the ball. Limiting the throws to first base by the pitcher helped move the game. Pitch the damned ball. No more game stoppages to allow the batter to step outside the batter's box and tug this and pull at that. No more interminable delays. The return of the infielders to their traditional positions allowed for more exciting action. As Jon Smolz stated the new rules got rid of the dead spots. It was relatively exciting with a faster pace. However, it is still early. PS I'm definitely not sold on this Yankees team.

I don't remember exactly when opening day was a few years ago; but I'd have preferred it be a week LATER than it was versus a week earlier. Terrible weather conditions in the Northeast; rainy Saturday, high winds Sunday.

I may be off by a day as I believe the Reds used to always play the first game, but I used the game log to see when some prominent players, whosurely played on opening day, played their forst games: April 17, 1951 April 11, 1961-first year of 162 games April 8, 1981 April 2, 2001

Season starts in March now to allow for the extra off days. On the back side the recently added wildcard round makes it hard to push later in the year. World Series might go into November some years

BUMP- In the past 3 days there have been 4 catchers' interference calls, all verified by replay.
I was aware that the team that was the beneficiary of the call got to choose between the result of the batted ball or the batter/runner getting first base.
What I found unusual is that if there are runners on and they advance safely past one base, they can stay there. Thought that interference would be treated like a walk or a hit batsman, one base for the runner and only if there was a force play in effect.
Happened last night in the Sox game. Runner on first, batter hit a dribbler and was thrown out at first while the runner went to second. However, infield shift had left third uncovered and the runner kept going.

Mike Shannon-R.I.P.
Long-time Cardinals broadcaster Mike Shannon has passed away. I spent several years living in St Louis and, like everyone from ST L came to love the guy. His was an amazing life that I don't think has been duplicated many times. He grew up in St. Louis, the son of a policeman, as a huge multi-sport star in high school, played QB at the University of Missouri, played for the Cardinals for 9 years winning two World Series in 64 & 67 and losing WS in 68 to Tigers, then spent 50 years in the broadcast booth including 30 years with the great Jack Buck. So, other than a year or two in college and some years in the minors, his entire life was in St Louis. I never met him, but by all accounts he was a great guy.
Thanks xmassader for catching my error
