Attendance predictions for homecoming? Last year we drew 13,847 against Yale, but that was also our home-opener. This year, on the heels of a terrific performance at BC and blow out against the Ivy favorites, coupled with a top five ranking, what are we thinking attendance is? Given that we had 13,117 against Merrimack over Labor Day weekend, I see no reason we shouldn't be able to at least match that. I'll say 14,387. I would hope that we can get north of 17,000 So I will say 17,778

We are playing by “Price Is Right” rules, right? In honor of Bob Barker,
I didn’t check the weather report, so will blindly go with 15,301.

In the Yale thread it was discussed how many Frosh are playing on D. I'm hopeful to see JC dressed again this week - I think it could happen.
Would be good to see him get a few touches this week again. I like what I saw against Merrimack. Fuller and Purdy looked great. Forrest does well in pass protection and is a bull on the few touches he gets a game. If HC gets up by a big lead I'd like to see them feed JC more to take pressure off the top 3 and give them some rest.

This guy just makes things happen when he gets the ball.

Colgate has football fans that travel? I would like to see them turnout but I doubt it. Colgate alum Joe Castiglione usually mentions the game on the Red Sox radio broadcast. With his reduced schedule maybe he can make the game. I heard Joe wish his daughter in law a happy birthday during a Sox game once. He mentioned that she and his son were HC grads and that they had been married on campus.

Perhaps that's the one who is a physician. If his sportscaster son Duke went to HC it probably would have been mentioned on Crossports.

Looking around online for some old Colgate-HC stuff to send friends this week, I came across this ticket from 1935. Just curious, does anyone remember Fitton being called "Holy Cross Stadium?" Any idea when we stopped using that name?

The ever reliable Wikipedia lists the game as being played at Fitton Field (which could be a default placeholder). Colgate went 7-3 that year including a 3-0 loss to the Crusaders. The '35 Crusader squad went undefeated including a 79-0 drubbing of Bates. They beat BC 20-6. The team only finished as high as 14 in the AP poll, which perhaps was a result of playing a few non-majors. Judging by the score of the Bates game, the Crusaders knew how they needed to improve in the polls. Wonder what posters on here would say/do if we drubbed Bucknell by a score of 79-0 (just kidding, I don't think Ches would do that and I don't think anyone on our schedule is that bad).

Who knows what a non-major or a major was in those days? I worked with a school administrator that was a Bates Hall of Famer. He played against Toledo in the 1946 Glass Bowl. Imagine Bates in a bowl game? www.bates.edu/news/1996/10/02/70-years-ago-the-glass-slipper-fit-the-bates-football-team/

Not an expert on the matter, but it seems like post-WW2 was when college football started to more clearly designate schools by division i.e. "Major College/University" and "Small College." I don't think you see any NESCAC or smaller schools like that on HC's from schedule from 1946 onward.
I believe the numerical divisions (1,2 and 3) were put in around 1972 or so.

The Tomahawk story refers to Fitton Field so I think that we can blame this on some poor soul, probably born during the first Cleveland administration, who worked at a local printer. The crowd was in excess of 25,000. crossworks.holycross.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1397&context=crusaderThere are several other stories of interest. Of particular note is a mention in the Purple Pennings column that Colgate played an offense which involved many laterals. St. A's was next on the schedule.

At some point it was designated University Division and College Division. Assumption was a regular participant in the College Division Elite 8. Then that division became 2 and 3. Led to some funny situations. I was a member of the soccer team my freshman year. Because HC was University Division, freshmen weren't eligible. But, HC was too cheap to have a freshman team, so all we could do was practice. After several weeks, the coach, a part-time employee; figured out that Vince Doughterty and Joe McDonough; the AD and the guy who ran everything; never set foot on the Fitton baseball field for a game or a practice. So he started playing freshmen! Never got caught.

My father made $18 per week as a reporter in the 1930's. $2.20 per ticket if I am reading that correctly is quite dear.

A hunch is Holy Cross Stadium was ordered for the poster to avoid confusion for visiting fans in pre-gps days. It's like the Gardner Auditorium in the Mass. State House. That's where hearings are held that often attract single issue proponents who are unfamiliar with the State House. The old joke is a car full of rubes asking a pedestrian on Main Street in the city of Gardner, MA. for directions to the Gardner Auditorium and missing the hearing in Boston.
