The boss tells me it's Google based now. Gmail? The addresses are still abc@holycross.edu, but it works via Google web-based e-mail. So, they're not Gmail addresses, but rather work through Gmail (or whatever Google based e-mail for colleges is called).

Believe it depends on if you are talking students or staff.
Students are definitely Gmail based - note the G after the @ symbol
student@g.holycross.edu
Think staff is an HC server but could be wrong
employee@holycross.edu
HC controls access to both "systems" however and I believe HC maintains the right to monitor both.

I think that's all basically correct. Boss says it's all Google, log in to employee e-mail via a Google tool, but that the students have g.holycross addresses and employees have just holy cross.edu addresses. College is definitely entitled to monitor anything on either.

I expect like any business email system there are many restrictions on content and use, e.g. not for personal use (usually not strongly enforced), language, harassment, etc. Whether the email system is hosted at HC or at Google, same rules would apply I assume

It's better that these students learn appropriate use of non-personal email as members of a college rowing team than to learn it out in the real world. I can't speak for anyone else, but every company I've ever worked for monitors emails, and I'm fairly certain that in most places any emails deemed "Vulgar and inappropriate" would be cause for immediate dismissal.

I see that both the men and women are rowing Saturday in Philadelphia at the Murphy Cup.

Apparently "handled internally" and not made into a cause celebre. Someone deserves credit for that.

good news. Now we need to get the men and women to train at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, the nation's premier rowing venue and site of the World Rowing Championships in September, the NCAA Championships in 2018 and the World Masters Rowing Championships in 2018. Anyone planning to attend these events may PM me as I am local to these events and can help you.

$700M+ Endowment for a school with less than 3,000 students. Shameful to beg.

Yep. Vast majority going to support scholarships for those who otherwise couldn't afford HC. Shameful.

ncaa- Who pays for the baseball team's sojourn through southern Cal? Guarantees from opponents and alumni donations. You really don't get this do you?

ncaa- Who pays for the baseball team's sojourn through southern Cal? Guarantees from opponents and alumni donations. You really don't get this do you? With the main emphasis on alumni donations. The seven games on the West Coast had an average attendance of maybe 400 - little if any guarantee money available with those sort of gates. Much of the funding for these sort of trips comes from a lot of alumni contributions. True at Bucknell as well.

Usually covers hotel rooms at very least.

Back to rowing: the men's varsity eight finished 3rd of 22 boats in the Murphy Cup races.
I can't confirm how good the competition was, whether the other colleges sent intramural teams, whether Holy Cross got a head start, or any other facts that might, when revealed, demonstrate that this 3rd of 22 finish was an epic failure. I'll leave that to others to exlore and just enjoy the win.

But the average attendance for the West Coast games this year was about 400. Maybe enough to pay hotel rooms. Not much else. I imagine the alums have to do a lot of the heavy lifting.

Any chance we can get a rowing tread with a more positive title??? Since the season is now underway, it clearly was not cancelled.

Agree with RGS. Since it appears the Rowing Season has started, those competitions should not be discussed here. Let's have them on the season thread.
Am tempted to lock the thread to prevent further posts to it, but will not should some information become available only to have a new thread started, so please post accordingly.
