Listed attendance- 12,578 On the telecast it looked more like 3-4000. Question Why would students who travelled 45-60 minutes, then stood in the hard rain for over 2 hours, then stayed to complete the almost 6 hour day, not walk down to Fitton Field with no rain for 3 hours to support their classmates ? Because it's Colgate versus BC. Studying, other sports, nursing a hangover, etc is probably all more exciting than a matchup against a bad Colgate team in the rain. I say this as the son of a Colgate grad who would have loved to rub these past few years in his face. But there's a big difference between a potential win against BC (in which they're somewhat trapped in Chesnut Hill) versus a not very good PL conference game. This is for you DrJack. When googling cartoonist Phil Bissell, I ran into Phil Bisselle, a son of Colgate who led a marvelous full life. uticaod.com/obituaries/pnys0463934

7 TDs in 3 quarters, with Sluka not really doing much with his legs (by his standards)......not a bad day's work.

My tennis team is playing in the finals this morning in the USTA New England 65+ tournament. I am playing this song for the team if we win!

Only “issue” I had with this game is I’d wish the coaching staff would let this new kicker try some field goals. He’s going to need to make some big kicks for us down the road and he isn’t getting enough experience. In the 4th Qtr it was like 4th and 6 on the 20 and we go for it. Great time to let this kid get comfortable with a windy Fitton field. Other than that total domination.

The kid hasn't missed a PAT yet this year, something like 22/22 although they haven't all been pretty. We were 0/2 on 2pt attempts. Definitely needs to get his first varsity FG off his chest.

Something like that in conjunction with the PPAC to encourage students who come to study music to also play in the band. HC Goodtime Marching Band is a student activity and most of those who join are there for fun and social side of being in the group. The band needs a director and members who will boost recruitment among the kids who played in high school looking to have fun in a social group. The PCPA is unlikely to attract many of that type of musician. If you play the violin, cello, or oboe you are not likely to join the marching band and pick up another instrument more appropriate for the Marching Band. Particularly if you're not a sports fan. It's just not a good fit.

You found the perfect clip to illustrate your point.🙂 Winning should make band fun, so we've got that going for us now.

The OL reserves were in during Slade's 75 yard run. Lots of game experience today for the HC reserves. 2s, 3s,& 4s played for HC vs. Colgate 1s for entire 4th quarter. Outstanding efforts from OL - Hanson, Newman, Schon, etc. with many pancakes and sealing off the linebackers, plus pass protection ! You have to admire their play in each of the games this year. They dominate..... Depth continues to be built by the coaches at every opportunity. The frequent substituting of OL & DL personnel is very noticeable from the start of every game. Let me second the turnaround play by DE Vaganick - stopping a 4th down attempt by Colgate QB. This turned the game into a HC onslaught in all facets. Beat Harvard !!

Umass vs JMU would be a great take- not for the game but for the bands at halftime. Both outstanding.

All I remember in the 4th quarter was 4th and goal inside the 10 twice (one a td, one with the subs, a sack)....that's no different than a PAT, IMHO; and he's made a bunch of those.

Tough to build football drama heading into this part of our schedule so maybe band drama will have to do.

Without getting into a ton of detail on the band, but from my perspective, a bad fit as director hired for the Fall of 2018, followed by basically 1.5+ lost years due to the pandemic resulted in a gutted enthusiasm and membership. That director left during the pandemic and has not really been replaced.
The Marching Band page on the Holy Cross webpage identifies Michelle Bata, PhD as the band contact. Below is her bio from the webpage for the Senior Leadership of Division of Student Development (https://www.holycross.edu/student-development/senior-leadership).
Not sure she is exactly in a position that will allow her to devote her full attention to developing the band.

My suggestion, already given...start a drum line. That alone can be both impressive and fun. Then get some horns. Work from there. Just a suggestion.

I remarked during the game, on this thread, that freshman Eli Thompson had made a great tackle. If you missed that play you can see it in the highlight video.?Then he went on to make two interceptions . I don’t recall seeing him in earlier games. I’d love to hear more about him from our experts

Hire a large, local high school band to play at the home games. Give them all matching purple sweatshirts and let them use the HC instruments or their own. Pay their band leader a good amount per game and maybe a nominal amount to the h.s. students in addition to the free admission and a good viewing location at the game and have the HC band members work with, play and participate with them to help teach them the HC songs.

I’d love to hear more about him from our experts If he can't play an instrument we'll get to him on Wednesday. He's fast, that's for sure, and has good hands with two interceptions. Perhaps he can succeed Coker as a punt returner. Maybe get him in on an occasional offensive sweep play in future years. We're going to need ways to get players into open space post-Sluka.

Kicking on 4th and 1 would draw less ire than kicking a FG on 4th and 8 where odds are that the defense will force a turnover on downs, armed with the knowledge that we'll be running the ball up the middle.

A few take-aways from Saturday:
I was surprised by Sluka’s stats. I though he had one of his more pedestrian outings, but his numbers were pretty good. Certainly not his best day, but it’s nice when your QB has a so-so outing, and you beat a conference foe by forty.
When Devin got hurt, who was helping him off the field? The head coach, that’s who.
When the 1983(?) team was recognized on the field during a third-quarter timeout, who made his way down the sideline to shake hands and/or man-hug those guys? The head coach, that’s who.
All in all, a good day. I’m very glad that I didn’t wimp out because of the weather forecast.
Let’s go undefeated this week!
