Jon Rothstein reporting today that Sacred Heart and Merrimack are joining the MAAC - assume for the 24-25 season - a blow to the NEC

That gives the MAAC 13 teams and the NEC 7

F-basketball, what does that do to those two schools' football programs?

F-basketball, what does that do to those two schools' football programs? I'm interested to know this, too. The only school in the MAAC that plays football is Marist, which is in a league of misfits (Pioneer). Have there been conversations going on behind the scenes where these schools would join the PL as associate members...? I really don't see any other destination for SHU and Merrimack. Independent? No more room in the CAA, nor would that league want these schools. Can't see the NEC allowing these schools to bolt for all sports but football.

Ten years ago, we would have said Bryant had no chance to join the CAA Football conference. Never know maybe the "northern/America East" schools split from the CAA in football.

America East Football could and should happen at this point. I think a big reason the CAA added Bryant in football is because they know there's a good chance they're losing Delaware to FBS and possibly College of Charleston at some point to A10. And Bryant may be the most logical "next man up" for all sports membership for the CAA at this point. Because the CAA really has no need for football affiliates at this point - they have 15 teams!

They could ask the PL to become football members-- IMHO that would not be good for the members as most in the FCS already dont rate it as a tough league.

The AD's at LeMoyne and Stonehill can't be too happy with this development.

Fairfield doesn't have a football team, so it'd be an Olympic sports move in this situation. Wasn't Fairfield not happy with Quinnipiac being added? I can't imagine they're happy with SH joining now too.

Only Rider, Quinnipiac, and Marist will not be Catholic schools. Marist was however initially founded as a Catholic institution and remained that up until 2003. The MAAC has basically branded itself as the a lower level version of the Big East. Too bad the D3 Little East already has the rights to that name.

I'm starting to think the NEC will have to just swallow the bitter pill and allow SHU and Merrimack to stay on in football as affiliates. Technically, the NEC maintains the autobid for now with 6 football schools left and could possibly try to convince Marist to join to get to 7.
Whatever happened to the New Haven DI rumors?

The notion of schools like Fairfield, Sacred Heart, or Bryant being invited to become Patriot League members is laughable. They would bring nothing to the party...either athletically or academically. Delaware is headed for the FBS according to a recent Wilmington newspaper article. This will accelerate the collapse of the CAA. Look to opportunities to pick up academically and athletically comparable schools for football like W&M, Richmond, and/or Villanova.

Actually I didn't say the league would invite them, but they might ask to join since they appear to be in need of a home for football, otherwise we are 100% aligned

They don't need the PL.
