Chu has this essentially correct. Holy Cross never owned slaves but we've been tarred historically because of Mulledy and what he did at Georgetown. Guilt by association?
The subsequent Bishop Healy supposedly "passed" as white while a student at Holy Cross. Supposedly the Jesuits at Holy Cross knew he was half black but kept that information to themselves.

I don't know if it was offered, but a little surprised Richmond came our way and not to the SoCon. My hunch is that they believe Nova is right behind them in joining our ranks. Curious what the breakdown of undergrads at U of R percentage-wise is from the Northeast...anecdotally knowing friends&family who attended there, I bet it's a fairly high percentage. 14% per below site which provides following breakdown for class of 2027: 15% VIRGINIA 28% MID-ATLANTIC 14% NEW ENGLAND 19% SOUTH 6% MIDWEST 5% WEST 11% INTERNATIONAL 2% U.S. TERRITORIES & U.S. CITIZENS LIVING ABROAD admissions.richmond.edu/studentprofile/index.html

I only skimmed through that discussion but I thought HC or some of the early Jesuits associated with HC had some involvement with slaves. Fathers Mulledy and Healy come to mind but perhaps slave owning is not the correct term. What I have read is that Father Mulledy was the Provincial who sold slaves owned by the Maryland Province, and he used the money to support fledgling Georgetown University. Subsequently, Father Mulledy went back to Rome for a period, and upon his return was assigned to be the first college president at the newly established College of the Holy Cross. The Healy brothers, whose mother was a slave, were sent by their white slave holding father to be in that first matriculating class. Some time later, when their father died, money from his estate, which benefitted by his slave ownership, was donated to Holy Cross to help rebuild the original Fenwick Hall after a fire. At no time have I ever read that Holy Cross owned slaves. That's great to know. I am sure UR has worked hard to resolve their connection to the Confederacy in any way they can. There can't be too many Colleges more closely connected to it as Richmond was the Capital of the Confederacy.

The Healy children were 1/16th black but by the "one drop" rule of the time, that was enough. The Jesuits at Georgetown referred to Patrick Healy as "the Spaniard."

That was my general understanding, I was just momentarily taken by the irony of building name changes at HC and reparation type scholarship programs at GU for what most likely is a far more tangential connection to Slavery as UR must have had seeing as Richmond was the Capital of the Confederacy.

UR whitewashed much of their southern affiliation about 20 years ago. Along with that came an increasing number of students from the northeast and far fewer from Virginia. They are often teased of being Rutgers South because of the number of NJ students. A lot of their local support in football has declined in part due to fewer local students. The City of Richmond has done same. Monument Avenue was one of the most beautiful avenues in the country but the offensive against anything related to the Confederacy has destroyed it. Its monuments to Lee, Jackson and Stuart were spray painted, basically allowed to be ravaged without punishment. These were huge, historical statues along the Avenue. And being a Richmond native, one big difference I’ve noticed on this - in Virginia, it was always less about the Confederacy, more about pride in Virginia as those men were looked as Virginia heroes in the history books, same vein as Washington, Madison, Monroe and Jefferson.

Interesting you mention this. When I was in Richmond about three years ago (my one and only time there), it felt like the downtown areas was more like Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. Was not expecting that.

Of course Washington, Madison Monroe & Jefferson did not take up arms against the United States of America which cost thousands of American lives as did these confederates. And they violated their oaths to preserve & protect. Not heroic at all. Clearly no equivalence between those who those who tried to destroy America and those who helped build it. A museum for the statues with an appropriate explanation would have served the purpose of maintaining a historical record. Can't continue this discussion as it is too political.

Class of 2028 acceptance rate was 16% That 16% is for non Early Decision applications. Correct?
The ED acceptance rate is extremely high and makes up at least 40% of the class I have heard.
Please correct me if I have misunderstood this,
The 16 percent is for the entire class. The acceptance rate for ED is probably 60-70 percent., but ED is a relatively small pool. Recruited athletes go ED, which increases the ED acceptance rate at HC because athletes comprise nearly 25 percent of the enrolled student body.

I have two HS friends that went to Richmond -- one I still play rec hoops with. The other was president of my class and is the bass guitarist for a band named the Misterwives who got semi-big time in the mid-2010's. He hooked up a couple of us with great seats to see them play at MSG a few years back. I forget who they opened for...will come to me. Both guys always emphasized how southern UR was, I guess in relative terms for New York City kids. The school definitely draws a good chunk from the mid-Atlantic but culturally it's very much a "southern" school. 87 - totally agree, I was definitely surprised that Richmond to the PL happened. I thought 'Nova would've made the jump first. To be honest, if I was a Richmond football alum or supporter, I'd be borderline upset/skeptical of the move. But best of luck to the Spiders. I hope they continue to be a perennial Top 30-ish team in FCS. A rising tide lifts all boats. Interesting side note - will UMASS keep lax in the A-10 given they're leaving the conference? Wonder if Richmond would ever look our way as a lax affiliate and/or if UMASS would look to bring lax back to the CAA. Those two moves would kill A-10 lax as there were only 6 teams in 2024.

Thanks for linking this hostage video. The decision to join the PL was such a well kept secret the coaches didn't even know and were still selling the CAA. I thought one of the questions was going to be "Does the Patriot League play touch or tackle football?" The AD timed his medical procedure perfectly. The coach and President didn't sell Spider Nation on the PL as much as dispell fears about losing redshirts, scholarships, FBS games and playing W&M.

I'm sorry but why are we so down on the College's academic reputation after the acceptance rate dropped to 21% for the class of 2027? The "we" are small in number but loud in voice. Some of the same folks that for years have been clamoring for us to leave the PL and join the CAA. I'm waiting for them to turn the good news about Richmond on its head and and say that now is the perfect time for us to apply to the CAA. After all, the CAA is already down one FB school and if 'Nova joins the PL they'll be down two . . . This is an opinion board, so such a comment is always an option. However, I haven't seen a hint of any comment supporting your suggestion, but I do recall comments, including mine, suggesting we take control of our football future by expanding and improving the PL with the three schools mentioned, or finding/creating a new home with programs committed to athletics. For basketball, I think we need to consider any realignment to support the interests of Holy Cross, including a stronger PL.

Ny Crusader basketball realignment plan -- go after W&M, Fairfield, Binghamton and Northeastern for all sports. The Richmone move cements football as the marquee PL sport for the near future, especially if Villanova potentially follows. However, basketball needs to be addressed. Those 4 programs would be the most realistic help we could hope for.

Relative to Richmond’s choice of Patriot League over Southern Conference (SoCon), here is their new-ish president’s bio: “After graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor of arts in economics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Kevin earned his Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University. For sixteen years, he served on the faculty of Cornell University, where he was most recently Director of the Institute for Compensation Studies and Dean of the SC Johnson College of Business. Kevin and his wife, Tina, grew up in a small town in Massachusetts.” president.richmond.edu/hallock/index.html
