If a student misses the transfer window isn't it still his right to attend the college of his choice the next academic year and compete for any athletic scholarship and NIL money available at the new fine institution? I thought that had been settled and student athletes are now driving the bus regarding their athletic and academic college careers. No. The courts have not said that a student-athlete has an unfettered right to transfer whenever he wants. What you seem to be suggesting is a situation like this. Boston College loses its placekicker during pre-season camp to a leg fracture. BC coach is desperate, and calls the placekicker at HC, who he had recruited. BC coach says to HC placekicker, 'if you enroll at BC next week, there's a full scollie and revenue sharing $$ waiting for you'. HC placekicker breaks the speed limit on the Mass Pike in racing to Chestnut Hill. Without looking at the NCAA rulebook, I would think there is a transfer eligibility rule that precludes such a scenario. If there were not, there would be pre-season chaos. I greatly suspect there is a rule precluding in-season transfers. E.g., HC hoops player plays in HC's fall semester games. Over semester break, the HC player transfers to Georgetown with immediate eligibility and plays for the Hoyas in the spring semester. Probably a stretched analogy >: When PSU football was sanctioned for miscreant behavior by a football coach, I believe the program lost 20-25 full scollies. To replenish the ranks, the PSU coaches relied on walk-ons from the ranks of PSU students, not transfers-in from Franklin & Marshall or Bucknell of players who had always dreamed of playing for the Nittany Lions, even as a walk-on. As players become closer to and/or actual employees it may be harder to prevent them from making a living. I'm thinking a student can withdraw from college A at the end of the Spring Semester and enroll in College B for the fall semester and if there is an open scholarship or available NIL money he can accept it if offered. That would not go through the portal.

Since I haven't made my "A Modest Proposal" pitch in months, how about athletes in colleges (power conferences, anyway), simply get paid whatever the market will bear. They don't need to go to classes, I mean, why interfere with their practices and outside interests? If they want to go to class; take tests; write papers; do research; and student kinds of things, then they pay full freight from their salaries (and likely, bonuses).
Make them full fledged minor league paid athletes. Forget this "student-athlete" nonsense.

You are describing Rod Smart who went by the nickname "He Hate Me" on his jersey when he played for the Los Vegas Outlaws of the XFL. Of course there would be no more student activity fees supporting minor league professional sports so that would save students and families money.

At the end of the spring semester, he withdrew from HC, and enrolled at The Ohio State University. And was rostered as a walk-on in the fall semester.. I do not know his scollie amount at HC, but he was a resident of Ohio. Tyler Purdy was a graduate transfer to JMU, and a walk-on. Chesney gave him a scollie four or five games in. I believe the portal rules only apply to players receiving merit aid for playing a sport, but I could be wrong.

Actually, PSU relied on both. They had at least several transfers from lower levels who were Pennsylvania residents and always wanted to play for Penn State. Bucknell lost a very good freshman TE from the Scranton area, for example. They also had a good recruit who was flipped late in the process by a PWO offer from Penn State. Bucknell was definitely not the only school to lose Pennsylvania natives to Penn State in that era.

Sounds like you are referring to Don Matheney, 6'1" 315 DT from Lancaster, OH. During his years on the hill (2006-2008 seasons), I became friendly with his family as we were recent emigres from OH ourselves and my secretary when I lived/worked in the Columbus area was from Lancaster.
From memory, Don's injury was during a game against Georgetown on a cheap shot.
I kept in touch with the family for a few years after le left HC and indeed Don had some eligibility left and he always wanted to play for the Buckeyes and got on the team as a walk-on but did get into a couple of games for them.
Don was good at plugging up the middle and had great size for that time, especially on the defensive line.

I recall seeing him on the sideline in several OSU games, and dressed. (I had looked up his number.) ---------------- The larger point I was trying to make in responding to longsuffering, is that the NCAA and every member institution is seeking to try to ensure / maintain some measure of roster stability. IIRC, several years ago, several schools were exempted from a NCAA cap of no more than 25 freshman receiving football scollies in any entering class because they had lost so many upper-class players through the transfer portal.

That is not my recollection. He lost time due to his injury but had a chance to go back home and be on his “home” OSU team. As noted above, while not in scholarship, as an Ohio resident and having already taken about 3 years of college credits most/all transferable, his education wouldn’t be that expensive and he got his dream to play for OSU his boyhood dream.
I didn’t save my email exchanges with his Dad but there was never a hint that he/they were upset with either Tom Gilmore or Holy Cross.

I agree they were not upset with TG but did not understand the lack of playing time. I also remember that Georgetown crackback block that took him out. IMO it was a cheap shot.

My recollection is that the injury ended his season. I do not recall him returning to HC, and being sidelined by TG. Before he was injured, I believe he was the starter at NG (?) or DT. There may have been discussion on this board about in-state cost of attendance at The OSU being less than the value of a partial scollie from HC.

Agree on all counts. Again, from memory, he was indeed the starter and pretty sure he was nose tackle as we had 3, not 4 down linemen. He did not return and sit on the bench after his injury. When he recovered, he went straight to OSU.

Yep. It's a "basketball thread" but please take a look at the title, which is much broader than basketball. As for the diversion, I'll only take partial "blame" (or "credit" depending on your point of view). Mom, he started it!!

Just my take but he looks disgusted. You know he's got a bit of money set aside (and a buy-out) and wonder how much longer he wants to do this in this new environment. Pretty sure he doesn't want to really coach "professionals" or he could have gone that way long ago.

Interesting fact based on a comment from the Bucknell coach John Griffin. The Bison are 1 of only 8 D1 hoop programs to not have an undergrad player transfer last year.

I think that is how you get better at this level.
Will be interesting to see how the PL does OOC this year.

Interesting fact based on a comment from the Bucknell coach John Griffin. The Bison are 1 of only 8 D1 hoop programs to not have an undergrad player transfer last year. The number of D-I schools has exploded over the last several years. There are something like 360 colleges playing D-I basketball. Good for Bucknell, but 8 out of 360 is horrible. HC bucked their recent trend only losing one from last year. Hoping next year HC joins that top 3 percent
