Detroit having no timeouts left is their fault for myriad reasons. They chose to confuse for reasons that are not allowed-- the ref is going to say who is eligible over a PA system to the whole stadium-- and only possible confusion that could legally occur, did: the refs got lost. Detroit was made to suffer the consequences.
I understand the logic of going for the win: you might never get the ball back, you might never be on the five or two or seven yard line in OT... but I like having multiple downs to make a play instead of a winner-take-all play after the letdown of the penalized and disallowed prior 2PT try. I'd kick the FG and hope to get the ball back in OT.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh man you guys didn't know a Cowboys fan has been coming after these cold takes on Twitter all weekend. So here I am to stir the pot for a relatively dormant thread:
- The ref has many responsibilities, especially pre-snap while the play clock ticks down. He's running away from the cavalcade of Lions players while #68 attempts to report because he has a responsibility for the Dallas defense to know #70 (who the ref thinks is reporting) is eligible. It's the ref's gaff, but why did he mess up?
- #68, who after the game would not explicitly explain what he did, only that he did "what Campbell told him to do," was initially in the huddle. Goff sent him out of the huddle to go report. #68's "oh, #@*&$~!!" moment. So right away, let's not all think the Lions were spotless in their mindset and execution of this play from the start just because they told you that A) they practiced it all week and B) they told the refs about it in advance.
- Penei Sewell, mountain of a human being, is trying to stand between the Dallas defense and the head official, seen as #68 is trotting towards the same official. #70 (who had reported eligible multiple times earlier this game, perhaps setting up the trickeration of the final play) is running towards the ref from the sideline. Did #68 actually say "report" as he claims he did in the post game interview? (Of course, he would NEVER admit: "I forgot, and when Goff sent me out of the huddle to go tell the ref, I missed my chance to get his attention as the ref was running away thinking #70 was reporting again.") Did the ref hear him? Did the ref assume #70 was reporting eligible again? All important details left to chance/referee ineptitude that the Lions could have better controlled themselves.
- INSTEAD, they tried to deceive Dallas. None of the players did the traditional hand wash/jersey number erase motion with their hands clearly rubbing over their chests. Detroit knows this immediately keys the defense to at least CONSIDER the chance that that individual can catch a pass. The Lions knew that having a bunch of players stands around the ref would create some confusion for the Dallas defense.
- Yet, the ref announces over the PA that #70 is an eligible receiver. Why do they do this? (To quote My Cousin Vinny: "It's called DISCLOZYUH, you dickhead!") THE DEFENSE HAS TO BE TOLD WHO CAN CATCH A PASS WHEN THEY LOOK LIKE, DRESS LIKE, AND HAVE A NUMBER LIKE SOMEBODY THAT NORMALLY ISN'T ALLOWED TO CATCH A PASS! Does Dallas have to be told he WILL be thrown the ball? No. Does Dallas have to be told where that player will be in the formation? No. Does Dallas have to be told where he's going to run? No. Does Dallas have to be told his name, prior position, number of times he's run routes that game, etc.? No. They just have to know it would be permitted. Dallas didn't cover him, because the refs didn't indicate he'd be worthy of needing to be covered. Is the number/reporting rule "stupid" as said above? That's a matter of conjecture, but the rule is in place and has been in place as long as people wearing 60-79 have gone out for passes. The range of numbers actually decreased as the pros moved more towards a college-level flexibility on "skill players" or more specifically, ball-touching players' numbers.
- The Lions wanted to hide who was allowed to catch a pass. Leave aside for a second that the refs made a mistake on who they thought they were told/heard the Lions wanted to be eligible. Detroit sought to deceive what the rules make clear is supposed to be loudly, clearly, and publicly confirmed: any lineman-numbered person eligible to catch the ball on that play. In this move to deceive Dallas (understandable why they may have done so, of course), the Lions also confused the officials who confirm and bestow said eligibility.
- Once the Lions heard "#70 reporting as eligible," they could have and should have called timeout. Instead they moved forward with the play that "worked," but can be argued it only worked because it was illegal. The ref's flag holds that position that the play was impermissible as executed.
You can tell a ref "I'm going to do X, Y, and Z," beforehand, but that still doesn't mean they now have the obligation to remember all your iterations on the playbook 3 hours later and be on the lookout for it. It's different from calling out illegal actions that you see and should be flagged ("That OT on KC traditionally lines up off the line of scrimmage every snap," or, "Patrick Peterson is grabbing my guys' shoulder pads.") to indicate the potential for something that may or may not ever happen: "If the situation arises, I am probably going to do something that is legal but confusing for the other team so please let it go because I'm following the rules."
I think was extremely prepared and wise for Campbell to do this before the game. I admire him as a coach. Yet, there's no guarantee any ref is going to remember a pregame speech about play design quirks when you're launching smoke screens all over the most tense point of the game when the clock ticking. The head official was reportedly not even in that pre-game meeting.
Campbell still could have kicked the FG and went to OT. If it works out and they score the 2PT conversion, or win in OT, nobody's arguing that play anymore. We'd be hearing 500 talking heads on TV and radio call the Cowboys choke artists. Instead, the Lions, and the vast majority of other NFL fans who hate the Cowboys, are bitching about refs. What about the tripping penalty called a few plays earlier against Dallas TE Hendershot (#87)? The replay clearly indicates that Detroit DE Hutchison (#97) committed the actual tripping offense. Not only must have the head official confused/misheard "ninety-seven" with "eighty-seven" when told the offender by his referee counterpart, but he confused/misheard "Detroit" with "Dallas" too. If that penalty was correctly called, Dallas runs the clock out and Detroit doesn't get the ball back with nearly as much time, if any at all, to come back down the field and attempt to tie/win the game.

A couple of noteworthy stats on Elms: 3) the largest crowd that Elms has played in front of this season is 254 Well the good news is that we're not going to break that record for them.

Quick shoutout to the Elms College employee responsible for covering the men’s basketball team. The Blazers, 2-11 overall and 0-2 in the conference, seem destined to fulfill the preseason prediction of finishing 15th of 15th. Scanning the team’s site, the headlines (below) make clear how the team has been overrun, fell short, been topped, keeled, been dropped, etc. but never “lost”. Doc Emrick moonlighting as their SID? He had an encyclopedia of verbs to define the way a hockey puck can be affected on the ice. One of my favorites to listen to in any capacity.

I'm sick of giving everyone chances. We give chances out for years. Then we retool, and have to give out more chances. We're like the second draw pile in Monopoly. I want to see results. And there are many of your that are far older than I am and have actually seen the glory days. I just want to be respected every year.

If Dave Paulsen can fix this program, and I’m not sure that he can, it’s going to take years. He’s one helluva salesman if he can convince any real D-1 prospect to come play here. I think things will get better each year under Paulsen. I don't think it's that heavy a lift to get kids to come to HC. We have some talented freshmen and evidently an even more talented class coming next year. Now they have to stay. I think we have more all rookie team players, even rookie of the year players, than we do all-league players, or PL POYs.
We can TAKE the reservation, but can we KEEP the reservation? (Do you want supplemental insurance?)

WCHC’s Bama comments above reminded me that Trey Gowdy mentioned us on his show the other night. He was talking about the CFP and who the best teams in the country are. He was talking about Georgia, and said something like, “They were #1 all year and they lost one close game . It’s not like they lost to Holy Cross. They lost to Bama.” Now, he was talking to ND’s Brady Quinn so it’s possible he meant Rudy’s HC in Indiana. Not sure if that makes me feel better or worse. As the legend goes, supposedly Alabama reached out to HC in the early '80s for a 2 game home and home series...our home game in Foxboro presumably....not sure who squashed it....BC ended up picking those games up and actually beat Bama twice. We are also 3-0 lifetime versus Georgia There's a joke in here somewhere that [small European kingdom] is 3-0 in major medieval conflicts against [large European kingdom], except when as--constituted back in the thirteenth century, said countries looked nothing like they do now. I'm sure can be said about the HC and Georgia and 'Bama profiles.

I don't like how everyone seems to bury Foley at every turn, but this comment did strike a chord with me. Yes, we're playing in the lower division of college football. I myself have said we should pour the resources into Hockey and Basketball, where we have a better chance (for a great number of reasons) to be the "real" national champion, or at least compete at that level, versus bifurcated football. And now football is seeing even further division and chopping-up, and losing amateur status...
With all that said, JMU isn't the highest anything. Big time college football is Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma, Clemson, Ohio State, Florida State... I would rattle off maybe two dozen or three dozen names before JMU crosses my mind. Nothing against FHCBC, or JMU, their fans, whatever. I don't care about them, and they're not in the national consciousness [yet? maybe...]
Are you suggesting we could invest more in basketball and compete for a national championship??? That's just crazy. Also, I am really sad to see Chesney leave, but this is the perfect next step for him. JMU is showing serious support for their athletic department and the results are showing. They are a top 25 (FBS) program and a top 25 basketball program now. If Chesney wins there over the next couple years, he will again be one of the most sought after head coaches and likely get a top P4 job. It's a brilliant move for him. In reverse order, nothing against Bob making the move. They have potential. My comment to Foley was that they're not there yet.
And it's not crazy, only you seem to think so. Holy Cross can merely got hot during "3 games in March" and automatically qualify for the same championship tournament that Duke, North Carolina, Oregon, Louisville, Villanova, and everybody else all compete in. There's no second tier (I am seriously discounting NIT and CIT here). And HC doesn't even have to be particularly good to do so. Bucknell won an NCAA tourney game. Lehigh won an NCAA tourney game. That's basketball, particularly neutral site basketball. We're not doing it with this team, but it's far more likely to happen in basketball (or hockey) than it would be for Holy Cross to fly down to Alabama and beat them on their home field. Alabama wouldn't even schedule the game. HC could potentially play the top dogs in basketball or hockey in a meaningful, playoff game. That's my point. A Cinderella run could happen, and the stakes would be the same in basketball or hockey. In football, you're not even in the same sport.

Nice Try Troll...You can't get a HC degree at JMU. You cannot be a Crusader. Your jealously is delicious. And you can't get play in a bowl game, be a Duke, or play in the highest division of College Football instead of playing small time College Football. 68 of the 70 million will be deferred every year so the Dodgers can avoid the luxury tax hit - I think MLB should do something about that Clearly not good for the game......He'll be making more than 8 individual teams next year.....no other professional sports league would allow that.......( not sure about European soccer ). The commissioner needs to be the commissioner No, he's making about $2M next year (money-wise). For luxury tax calculation purposes, his salary (if my almost-photographic memory still serves me) is closer to $28M for the books. The deferred years have to count for something while he's on the roster/team. This means that the team will have an incredible amount of flexibility to pay current and future players and have Ohtani cost as much as a backup catcher. It also nearly cleaves in half the luxury tax penalty. Ohtani takes the classical financial risk of money later versus money now without interest. That, and theoretically, a meteor can strike the Dodgers and eliminate the franchise, or any other number of Acts of God that can prevent the franchise from following through with their commitment; the deferred payments do not begin until his new ten year agreement is up.

So much for getting a little bit of a discount because you'd only have to pay one player, instead of two. Now the Dodgers are getting two players in one, but paying him two players' salaries. The issue is obviously injured. Your star DH normally doesn't have to risk a chance of injury while pitching. Your star pitcher normally doesn't have to risk a chance of injury while batting, or running the bases. Ohtani is subject to both. I hope the Dodgers have good insurance (actually, I don't care if they go out of business).

Who cares what JMU will pay HC. If it's $10M, we still need to A) get a good coach in here to keep the momentum going, and B) keep the existing players we need to, and C) go out and get more/better players each year moving forward. A affects B and C, but I'm not sure money impacts anything except for POSSIBLY (A) in the very short term.

Their star quarterback is injured and out for the year. They can't score points with him injured and out, and would probably get blown out in a non-competitive matchup in the playoffs. There is a provision in the guidance for the selection committee to omit teams based on player/coach availability as part of the decision-making process. It's unfair, but the whole damn sport is unfair at that level. Why start now?

Kalif was rarely used today, underutilized. 1 rush for 9 yards. 2 punt returns for 13 yards with a long of 11. 0 receptions, 9 targets. 1 fumble, 1 recovery. baffling to me! Play him more! You'd think he'd be valuable out of the slot and with backfield motion like Deebo Samuel. LaPorta's emergence and Amon-Ra's stature as the true #1 will always limit Raymond's upside. You also have Reynolds and Jameson ahead of him.
