“All of you have the weekend. Think about whether you want to be on this team or not.” Not sure that style of coaching exists anymore. Today’s athletes are a lot different.

Referee: "Coach, you are one player short"
Coach Dale: "My team's on the floor"

Carmody turned HC into an undisciplined, soft program. Thankfully it appears that Nelson has the personality to get that rectified ASAP. If only we were a big enough program to have drive time sports radio caller hot takes, because this kind of tough guy nonsense would fit right in. Ripping the former coach for players departing after he leaves because somehow this makes them "soft" is a joke.

Ripping the former coach for players departing after he leaves because somehow this makes them "soft" is a joke. Undisciplined: 3 of his first 5 scholarship recruits (+1 preferred walk-on) departed for disciplinary reasons while Carmody was still at HC. Soft: From 2000-2015, HC's worst KenPom defensive rebounding ranking was 155 (under Kearney - disaster), and there were only 2 other years above 100 during those 16 seasons. HC finished ranked above 300 in each of the past 3 years, including a 330 last year. Losing: .389 PL winning percentage over 4 years. Last place finish in the pL in Year 4 Those are just the facts.

Let’s put it this way, Brett Nelson is inheriting a much more difficult situation than Bill Carmody.
It’s revisionist history, but Milan Brown really didn’t leave the program in a terrible condition.

Carmody's time at HC reminds me of Woody Allen's Film, TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN. That's what he did and HC basketball became a joke.
But that was then and this is now!!
Coach Nelson maybe the Phoenix that rises HC up from the Carmody ashes.

IMO It is time to move on from Carmody, Grandison & Green. In terms of moving on from Green and Grandison, we have heard all kinds of rumors that are reported as being from knowledgeable sources saying that they are both gone. I haven't heard that either have actually signed on anywhere yet. I don't follow the guys on social media, but plenty of people here do and are good about reporting this stuff. Is there some sort of official signing period for transfers that we're waiting for The only thing we really know is that at least one scholarship was pulled because Kolek and Thomson (and Green and Grandison) make 14 and that can't happen.

I have no inside source. But just from following other "will he or won't he" sagas over a long inconsequential life, there is probably a 10-20% chance one or both will be back. Now here is an interesting hypothetical: HC assigns the scholarship of one or both of players in the portal to another person and then for whatever reason the portal player can't make his transfer work. The portal player wants to return to HC and play as a non-scholarship player for his junior year, take the need based financial aid he qualifies for, and then pick up an available scholarship for his senior year. Does the NCAA/PL allow him to play because he is obviously a recruited "scholarship equivalent" player and only a "walk-on" because HC already used it's allowable scholarships for the year?

I believe that he cannot play since he was originally a recruited athlete Another hypothetical if Green and Grandison transfer and Coach Nelson uses "their scholarships" on frosh entering in September of 2020. Can the two scholarships be divided among the 3 walk ons for one academic year and then have all 3 revert back to walk-on status in the fall of 2020.

No. Unlike other sports, basketball scholarships cannot be divided up. It must be 100% scholarship or nothing.

[ Theoretically HC could put out 100 scholarship offers even if the scholarships to Green and Grandison had not yet been pulled. The only thing they cannot do in good conscience would be to let the players accept offers if they don’t know if scholarships will be available. And they could even do that and still be in compliance with the NCAA rules.

As bison notes, FBS football and basketball are headcount sports, no equivalencies. That's why the rumor of Sale to Texas Tech has some credibility, because a varsity starting senior was tossed off the Tech team by the NCAA two weeks ago. This freed up a scollie, assuming the headcount was 85 at the end of June, and it then dropped to 84..
