The Women are very close in Scholarship grant money to the men. According to the chart attached in the link below, Women’s aid average is $16,235, Men $16,827. Reviewing the chart, it is easy to see why UConn, BC, BU, Quinnipiac, Northeastern, PC are winning the recruiting battles against HC currently. Several are averaging more than twice the amount of aid provided. It is also enlightening to review the average SAT Math and ACT score reported for each school. Show to provide all entries including Holy Cross, to see the entire chart beyond the initial 10 scholarshipstats.com/hockeyThese numbers appear to be the average across all sports, as ND gives an average $35k to women but does not have a women’s hockey team. The numbers are pretty dated in that our tuition is listed around $55k and we are well over $60k now.

I think the biggest factor is quality recruiting. Riga was the recruiting coordinator at Q and had championship teams. Shows the importance of recruiting and the importance of quality assistant coaches. It's great to see many former players who not only understand the culture and academics at HC but have a passion for the game. It is too bad we don't see that on the women's side. This next part is more spitballing here, but there are a lot of junior and prep players desperately trying to play D1 men's hockey. We have an established reputation and a heck of a workout facility. In terms of capacity, we aren't really far off for AHA teams. Of course Bentley and SHU opening new barns means a bit more pressure on us. I know more than a few guys who had dreams of playing for Hockey East teams or even making it to a team out West but even before juniors knew that goal was out of reach (unless they really lit it up in the BCHL or something) but the goal of D1 hockey in AHA was still alive. Bigger player pool I suppose. One other note...Meredith Roth is a great coach and a good offensive mind. Although she was a D3 coach previously, she was a head coach. Can't underestimate that loss. HCKL has an excellent defensive system but her teams have consistently struggled to generate shots and scoring chances. It is important as a coach to know your strengths and challenges and surround yourself with assistants who balance you out. Tonight, a number of alums hosted a steak dinner for the Men’s team to get them ready for this week. There is an alum mentor program modeled after what the football team does and the alums and parents of the program have given a lot of money to the program since Riga has arrived. The women do not have that support currently. The middle paragraph is what worries me. Despite the recent loss to Bentley, HC has had more success than SHU and Bentley the last 2 years. Imagine how Riga could do with their facilities. The AD’s at both of those schools might be having similar thoughts. And 100% agree that Meredith Roth was a huge loss to the women’s program. But HCKL needs to be on an even financial footing to see what she can do as it appears she will be the coach for next 2 or 3 seasons.
