His comments on the name of Bucknell's stadium were way off-the-mark and showed he did no research. Had he done so, he would have found that Christy Mathewson was an All-American in football and best known at Bucknell for his performance in that sport.

Any news on our men's fall ball schedule ? - our site has the '22 women's roster but nothing for the men 3-way scrimmage at Fairfield that also includes Manhattan on Oct. 23. The women's fall schedules tend to be more robust because the men are allowed 17 games vs. outside competition through the entire academic year, while the women can have 17 dates in the spring and up to five in the fall. One small point. The men are allowed 17 "dates of competition" during the year. In the fall, they can play more than one game on a date, so in total they can end up with more than 17 games during the academic year. The fall games, of course, are really exhibitions/scrimmages and don't count for anything other than getting the team ready for February.

. . .. When I was at HC, the women's golf team competed in the Big South. We had mostly New England kids and seemed to struggle a bit against competition from the Carolinas. That said, going off memory alone, I remember some competitive tournaments in the northeast. I absolutely love golf but can't say I follow HC or local college golf. Talking to our varsity golf coaches at work, they pointed out most highly competitive golfers are looking for D1 scholarships, even if that means URI or Bryant instead of a UNC or Duke. Do we offer golf schollies currently? The only PL school that gives any athletic scholarships is Boston U, and they are far from fully funded. Richmond, who is an associate PL member in that sport also gives some aid. Bucknell, HC, and Lehigh give no athletic aid at all. There are very few northeastern mid-majors who give any golf scholarship money. The PL began to sponsor Wgolf in 2012-13, when Navy added a women's golf team. Prior to that, Bucknell and Holy Cross were in the Big South and Lehigh played an independent schedule.

Andy Katz picked Navy to win the PL and a 16 seed What does he know that most do not ? Nothing. Katz doesn't follow the PL closely and probably only looked at their 12-1 league record from last year. Very unlikely he noticed that they didn't play Colgate or Boston U even once the whole season. Also the were home for eight of their 13 league games. Also got to play Bucknell both times when Meeks was out. They were good, but not as good as that record implies. Navy only loses one rotation player, Cam Davis, but that is a very big loss. They should be a first division team - probably 3rd or 4th - but it is unlikely they will be as good as Colgate or Boston U. One edge they do have is that DeChellis may be the league's second best coach.

VC often has incomplete info. Logan says his first offer was from FDU, fwiw. Maybe Sean did say that, but the article does not have a quote. The author wrote that. He could have incomplete info also. Logan specifically said that FDU was his first offer on his own twitter account: "Honored to have received my first Division 1 offer from Fairleigh Dickinson University— @fduknightsmbb

According to VerbalCommits, Sean does have the 13 offers mentioned here, but as far as Fairleigh Dickinson being first, they are not listed among the 13. The list has the Holy Cross offer being the first of the 13 mentioned. VC often has incomplete info. Logan says his first offer was from FDU, fwiw.

Not enough local kids on the team...as in none? Certainly none of the team members gave Holy Cross a "hometown discount" in the recruiting process. Why would you? The best high school players are in California and in the Midwest... And Texas. In the rankings put out by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, three of the nation’s top eight teams are from Texas.

Do you know for a fact that Colgate and Bucknell distribute 10 schollies each among their roster ? Maybe Phreek has the exact numbers ? We know AWP, BU and Lehigh have the big advantages in place but was not aware of the others bucknell definitely does not have 10 scholarships. I seriously doubt the Colgate has either.

Here are some of the relevant NCAA rules about fall practice:
1. Official practices can begin 42 days before the first game - but only five days per week. A few non-practice activities are allowable before then (see #'s 2 and 3 below), but most normal practice activities are not allowed at all (see #4).
2. "Team conditioning or physical-fitness activities supervised by coaching staff members may be conducted on or off court but shall not begin prior to the beginning of the institution's academic year."
3. "Outside of the playing season, from the institution's first day of classes of the academic year, only a student-athlete's participation in required weight training, conditioning and skill-related instruction shall be permitted. A student-athlete's participation in such activity shall be limited to a maximum of eight hours per week with not more than four hours per week spent on skill-related workouts."
4. "Prior to the start of on-court preseason basketball practice (i.e. the practices that begin 42 days before the first game), members of the institution's coaching staff may not be involved with one or more team members at any location in any of the following activities: (a) Setting up offensive or defensive alignments; (b) Chalk talks; (c) Discussions of game strategy; (d) Reviewing game films or videotapes; (e) Activities using basketball equipment; or (f) Observing student-athletes in any basketball activities even if such activities are not arranged by the institution's coach." (Note: certain activities enumerated in #2 and #3 are permissible.)

What do they call all the work that the team was doing all summer long?? Is that just players working as a group with no coach instruction allowed? Whatever it is, I am sure there are some rules that limit what the team can do Generally players are limited to eight hours a week, which includes conditioning and individual skills sessions. There are no full team practices that include any normal basketball activities.

I believe formal practices can start 45 days before the first game so that means the last week of Sep - this time has moved up over the years but it hasn't been Oct 15 for awhile now It is actually 42 days before the first game. During that time period, a team is allowed to have a maximum of 30 practices.

Why do you bother to post here - on a Holy Cross message board, when all you do is bash the school and the decisions it makes? Still pissed you had to walk a hundred yards to use the restroom at the Lax field? And shouldn't you have a HS JV tennis match to take pictures of or something better to do? Why bash PC on a HC message board?? Jealous? There is no reason to bring up them dropping baseball. They have had more guys play in the Majors in the last 25 years (Worcester/Auburn's Keith Reed and John McDonald) than Holy Cross in the last 50 years Mike Pazik is the last and his final game was in 1971. I think you need to check your facts. HC has had three MLB players in the past 50 years. Also Pazik’s last season in MLB was 1977.

Apparently Hillsman will not be coaching in Spain due to problems with his work permit paper work Apparently it was more than just work permit issues that caused the team to quickly get rid of him. The Syracuse paper reports the following: “After the team announced that Hillsman would take over head coaching duties last Wednesday, Leganés moved away from Hillsman due to backlash and visa issues, Paco Simón of Al Cabo de La Calle reported. The backlash was the result of a report from The Athletic that detailed an alleged pattern of inappropriate behavior and bullying during Hillsman’s time at Syracuse.”

6 of 10 ooc games at home - something you don’t see for our men’s team - no one’s fault, just the reality of men’s college basketball . . . and the reality of women's basketball - where most teams in leagues like the A-10 don't make a lot of money for home games, so they are more willing to schedule home-and-home series. For example, Bucknell's women team in recent years has had home series with Penn State, St. Joes, Temple, GMU, Fordham, Buffalo, and Akron. The three A-10 schools (Fordham, GMU, St.Joes) and Akron collectively averaged less than1000 spectators per game in 2019-20 and Temple averaged about 1500. And some attendance figures may be padded by men/women doubleheaders, where the women's attendance is listed as the number who attended the men's game. In addition to much lower attendances, the women's games typically have MUCH lower ticket prices, so revenue is very low in many cases.

Curious to see if they add an 11th game since I believe they are 1 short of the NCAA limit - maybe a D3? Yes, a team that doesn't participate in an official Multi Team Event is allowed to play 29 regular season games.

Just curious. Where is Immaculate HS in NJ? Is that Immaculate Heart Academy or Immaculate Conception? Neither. She attended Immaculata in Somerville (Somerset County). Closer to Central Jersey.

Perhaps it was a two game series against St. Francis or with another nearby school and HC decided to nix the second game and overnight stay back when the vaccine was unavailable and overnight travel was a riskier proposition. I think it’s extremely likely that there was a second game that got canceled. However I doubt it had anything to do with overnight travel or Covid. As it was, they stayed in a hotel for a day.

St. Francis has had a road game scheduled for Sunday the 29th for at least three months, so there was no tournament that recently fell through. And your point?? We don't know the reason they drove all the way to St. Francis (PA) for a single game. It is just odd. The point is that there was never any weekend tournament that fell through. You’re correct that we don’t know the reason for such a long trip,

My guess is that someone pulled out of the weekend tourney. Many schools play OOC back to back or Friday and Sunday OOC against the opponents. BC is playing Maryland and Northwestern at Durham, NC. UMass is playing Maryland and American in College Park, MD UNH is playing Ohio and Louisville in Louisville, KY UNH is also playing BU and Iowa in Boston later this year. Iowa plays BU the next day. So yea, it is uncommon to play a single game like that. St. Francis has had a road game scheduled for Sunday the 29th for at least three months, so there was no tournament that recently fell through.

I've never been to an HC soccer game (that might change this year) but I've assumed they don't have an admission charge. I'm going to be in NH later in Sept. and one of my sons asked if I wanted to go to a Dartmouth soccer game. I was surprised to see that they charge $10. This isn't a huge amount, but it made me wonder whether other PL and Ivy schools charge admission to soccer games. Most (maybe all) PL schools don’t charge for soccer admission.

Our rookie of the year Bronagh averaged 11.5 ppg to Weimar's 8.6. Don't hand BU the trophy (the PL Trophy, you can hand them the Turnpike Trophy) just yet.🙂 Let's see how our recruits work out. I think the point is the Boston U - with seven of their top eight players returning from a strong team - would’ve likely been favored to win the PL even before they added Weimar. Adding a skilled 6-4 starting center will surely make them an even bigger favorite. Their biggest competition is likely to be Lehigh, who has two of last year’s seniors coming back for a fifth year. Marist btw was 18-4 last season, with one of those losses to national power Louisville.

Thanks. There are some medical issues and hopefully he will be OK after some time away.
Nash had been at Bucknell as head coach since 1999 and for a while as an assistant prior to that. His predecessor started in 1967. So there have been two head coaches in 55 seasons.
Nash has done a good job there considering he has never had scholarships.

Hope the weather clears up by tonight. Ominous out there right now. Lowell plays on turf so they can play....now if the game was at Holy Cross, it would have been PPD at least. I don't know anything about the HC soccer field, but I do know that there are many grass fields with super drainage systems that allow play to continue even with huge amounts of rain. I have seen Bucknell play immediately following a 3-inch rain, and there was no standing water at all on the field and no issues.
