Couldn't miss the FEROCIOUS D and FEROCIOUS rebounding by VW. They would have beaten us by 20+.

The Cross has played at least one of the last 32 NCAA teams as Rhode Island beats Big East member Creighton by double digits (84-72) leading wire to wire. If South Carolina wins tonight, it will make two of the round of 32 teams that the Crusaders faced this past season.
With URI's win today, it means that Holy Cross will HOST an NCAA Round of 32 team in Worcester at the DCU Center next year.

I'm very happy for Danny Hurley and the Hurley family, whom I've known from Danny's many seasons at St Benedicts. Talk about a good St Pat's Day for them!

Most boring first two days ever? For me it has been. Reading stories of Xavier's and Middle Tennessee's "upsets" tells me all I need to know. I'll probably be more interested in the NIT starting next week...not joking either.

Lots of exciting games yesterday. Seton Hall choking down the stretch in losing to Arkansas. Marquette. Michigan. Lots of running jumping shooting defending. It's basketball at its best. Only miss being in Vegas.

One of the things that does get under my skin is when a mid-major underdog comes within a single shot of beating a highly favored team...and "experts" talk mostly about how poorly the favored team played. More folks are questioning how the ranks for post-season play are determined (and the seeming bias against any mid-major). We are often treated to a long explanation about why these first round games are "unfair" to the top teams because they cannot take their opponent seriously. OK, that is mostly Mike Francessa, but it does drive me up a wall. There is a cottage industry forming that listens to him and then lists the mistakes he made in spite of his "expert" knowledge. Finally, last week he admitted that he does not follow college basketball, except for a few of the top teams. His explanations about a team's performance sometimes include injuries (which did not occur) or players who did not participate (when they are listed has having played in the box score). There are also flubs like putting a college in the wrong conference (Maryland) or playing the wrong team. After this diatribe, my question would be - why can't commentators talk about the game that was actually played without constantly referring back to their personal bias (which they see as being "objective")?

It would be interesting to see the breakdown in OOC games for the "Mid-Majors" and the Power 5 teams. The big conference teams may well play 80%+ of their OOC games at home while the mid-majors are almost always on the road. So the Power 5 can rack up nice W-L records and have very few opportunities for "bad losses" while the Mid-Majors have few opportunities for "good wins" and then, playing in a lower-ranked conference, have many opportunities for "bad losses". This really p's me off.

The exception is Mich. St. and that's why they are usually ready & battle-tested come March.
MSU played Ariz, Kentucky, St. Johns, Baylor and Wichita St. at neutral sites and Duke in Durham.

This season MSU played NU, FGCU, Oral Roberts, Oakland, and Youngstown St. as well, all in East Lansing. Izzo skeds better than any coach in the country.

The Thursday thru Sunday games were right up there on my top sports must watch list, but pretty much conceding now that the big boys have won . One win is a moral victory for 20 conference teams in a tourney where it takes 6 to win it all. Why don't they just blow up this sham and make it a 32 team tourney with 4 teams from each of the top 6 leagues , 2 teams from each of the the next top 2 leagues and 4 at large for the Gonzagas and Wichita States of the world. Downgrade the rest to a FCS type tourney . Every year it gets harder for mid majors to get a fair chance with every thing stacked against them that we might as well cry uncle and renounce this madness. Good day and on to the Red Sox.

I liked it when there was a limit on the number of teams from any one league. Now with the big boys, you can have a losing league record and still go to the dance...with a large payday for that league.
