Great play by Pujals, the team. Great coaching. Great fan support. Wore down in second half, missed tackles, dropped balls. Game vs Bucknell now crucial.

We had 10 penalties called against us. UConn had 4. Tough to beat anyone that way. Need to clean it up quickly.

An absolutely perfect win to put HC back on the football map....sadly, we have Gilmore as a head coach which jinxed it....it will be interesting how long TPTB will deal with this.....do they care? Doubtful.
I think Tom Gilmore is a fine man btw....he just isn't the guy to put HC football back on the map sadly.
We have to (as a school) scour the football coaching world...I'm sure there is a a guy out there for Holy Cross.

UConn win as predicted by almost everyone on this board. Closer than most predicted for a number of reasons on both sides of the ball.
My takeaway is that IF we stay healthy (an enormous IF) at the key positions we could be looking at a 500 season.

In previous seasons, in a game such as this, there would be loud complaints about the offensive schemes and play-calling, and laments about coverage, whiffing, and being out of position on defense. HC was competitive in this game -- more first downs, more total yards, more time of possession -- and IMO, the Crusaders' level of play swept away the usual laments and complaints
Sorry IH, but I thought CTG and his staff out-coached Edsall. Edsall's OC previously was the OC at Auburn for four years, so he's likely making 2x-3x the $ of Gilmore. His DC was long-time DC at Villanova, so I would expect less. And I agree with ACTP on Edsall. I think Edsall may have watched too much tape of the Fordham game. (And CTG had no relevant tape at all.)
The supposed big difference between FBS and FCS is speed and physicality. I didn't see much difference last night.

In many FBS/FCS games, the FCS team wears down in the second half.......can the guys avoid that, and keep taking it right to the Huskies?? I watched the game but did not participate in the back and forth here. Seems as though you are a prophet however. Passes which go high are an indication of fatigue.

We eased up when we were up 20-7 and took the ball out of Peter's hands. That was not smart. Will we go back to throwing on 1st downs now? In hindsight, a very fine analysis of the ultimate outcome. Reminds me of so many hoop teams going into the 4 corners way too early in a game. You go from striving to score to striving to run out the clock. That's fine but it isn't a very good game plan if implemented too early, as here

We played and were coached VERY WELL. We were also jobbed by the refs. Probably the perfect analysis of the game for the first half and part of the third quarter. When we went into the 4 corner, our offense shut down and we began to hang on by our fingernails. That's on the offensive coordinator. Why do you abandon what you implemented so successfully in the first part of the game?

As a proud parent and new supporter of Holy Cross Football, I believe most of you are embarrassingly negative people and I am going to close my account. If this is the real face of the HC Football and Athletics supporters I fear our family has made the wrong decision in choosing HC for our son! Not 1 single thing happened from any standpoint last night that deserves criticism. You people are brutal and should be ashamed of yourselves. Because I will not make these comments under a mask I am signing my real name. PETE LANG Your comments are on the mark. Seems as though many here have never heard of Teddy Roosevelt's remarks about the man in the arena. However, that is the nature of this board. It provides a forum for complaints and armchair quarterbacking. At least there was no criticism of any player as all too often happens on the basketball board. As you can also see, certain posters have a definite agenda with respect to the program.

HC surprised many by making this a real game right to the end. I thought the phantom "running into the kicker" call was the turning point. The kicker kept hopping on one leg (3 times at least) and finally was brushed by an HC player. He then threw himself back and got a VERY late call. This call was in line with the two non-calls when UConn players had clear grips on the face mask of HC runners. One of those times, the UConn player holding the face mask had his arm wrenched so hard it injured him and he had to be taken out of the game. On that play, HC lost a key first down on a holding call. As to complaints about Coach Gilmore...well I just don't see him as responsible for a few dropped balls or our one very unfortunate fumble. His schemes seemed for the most part to be successful. The team performed at a level I expected (and hoped for) and looks to be headed into some good games this year.

Made the 35 mile trip in an hour and a half! Great game, bad ending. While I'm not always a big Gilmore fan, he had the guys ready to play last night. Had some horrible calls go against us - running into kicker, and the 3D down spot w/ 2 mins to go were game changers. The missed field goal was a huge momentum changer. A winnable game that slipped away. I was nervous at the half, because the fact is that the reduced shollies hurt late in the game. It's hard to run with the big boys when their 2d and 3d teamers are just as good as the starters. We got worn down and it made it hard to answer. If you spend the money for 60, go the whole route! Always nice to see UConn fans crap their pants, shame we couldn't finish the deal!

As you've seen, this board can be very negative. I believe that is primarily because the folks who are active on it are die hard Crusader fans who bleed purple. They want to see the sports programs at the school...especially football and basketball...do well. Very well. That hasn't been happening for some time now and people get frustrated. Yes, last night's loss was disappointing. And, yes, there is some truth to some of the critical observations. We touched bottom against Fordham last year, but looked a totally different team last night. I was proud of our performance. I hope your son will play a big role in the renaissance of HC football in coming years.

Hope you stick around as the majority of us don't criticize every move Tom Gilmore makes. It's almost like if TG takes his coffee black, indianhoop would question why he doesn't include cream. BTW, how's your head this morning? Water and Gatorade and a bacon egg and cheese should do the trick.

The other thing saderdad, there are negative fan boards everywhere. So doesn't really matter where he chose to go, difficult to get away from. Ours is one of the least negative, hang in there, team looked good, results hopefully will improve, and we're all rooting for Ws

Did we ever get an answer on whether the first down spot was reviewable? I'm pretty sure spots relating to first down or not are reviewable. I don't think we had used a review before that. We still had a timeout (in fact, we used one right after that play and Gilmore was clearly talking to the officials about the spot). Anyone know the answer? I didn't tape the game but my friend who was watching texted to tell me the UConn player appeared to clearly be short of the marker.

This is not a good place for parents to get there HC athletics info. Last night's postings were mild and mostly coach-directed.

Because I will not make these comments under a mask I am signing my real name. PETE LANG Hang in there, Pete. Most of what happened last night was very positive in our first game against an FBS team in a very long time (and a much longer time if we're looking for an opponent other than Army). Almost everyone here very much wants to see HC succeed. But for a few good years with Dominic Randolph and crew, it has been pretty painful to be an HC football fan since 1991 so frustrations are high. There have been too many games the last several years where we seemingly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory so some were frustrated by the "here we go again" feeling as we watched it slip away last night. With the school making significant commitments to the program and your son and so many other strong student-athletes committing to HC, there is certainly reason for optimism going forward but we need to start winning. If we play like we did for most of the game last night, we will start winning and should obliterate Bucknell next week. One good thing about this board is that you will almost never see direct criticism of any individual player, which is not the case on almost any other D1 football message board. I hope your son has the same amazing experience at HC both on and off the field that so many others (including many here) have had before him. It's a great school and a very strong and loyal alumni community. Reading a message board after a painful loss is probably not the best place to get a good sense of that.

PETE LANG Mr. Lang--- I hope you'll stay with the board and provide your thoughts and insights about the program and each of the games. As others have said, this board, in actuality, is probably one of the least negative boards around. Your family has made a great choice of college for your student-athlete, Holy Cross is one of the very best colleges in the country. Your son will get a great education, play some great football, and he's joined a real family that he can be part of for the rest of his life.

You naysayers are I for a surprise this year. Jc played great tonight. Officiating was terrible vs HC on at least 4 major occasions. Only fault I find with coaching staff is the 4th down play call with PP under center. It was a good showing and I think a good sign for the rest of the season . P.s. I know he got hurt tonight, but I don't know how Riley is not a starter. He is legit.

Defense was great last night. Lots of guys running to the football. Hated losing Riley (thought is was poor form on his hit that led to his shoulder injury).
Scholarships making a big difference.
PP is about as tough as they come.
This board is about as tame as they come.
Can our guys bring the same vs Bucknell? If so, we roll. If not, could be ugly.

Was at game last night. Random thoughts... -Great to see two New England teams slug it out...If you complain about this game you're just miserable and grumpy. -Thought defense played well....having Alin Muhammed back makes a big difference -Linebackers McBeath and Brady especially were all over the place -You notice the FBS/FCS size difference in person more than TV...UConn was much bigger/faster especially on outside. -Pujals looked in control and in command of offense...I agree that last fourth down was handled poorly. Staff seemed indecisive on play call and personnel. -Receivers had some poorly-time drops. It happens. -Bucknell is big game. Must carry momentum gained from this performance on crappy trip to Lewisburg. A loss at Bucknell will be real bad. -The running into the kicker call was brutal. That should never have been called. -Say what you want about Gilmore but HC was well-prepared and had a great game plan. Staff doesn't run patterns, tackle, fumble or drop passes.
