Mr. Lang - I actually played football for the program from 1990-1993. I'm Dave Harrington and played QB. I was there when we were 11-0. I was there my Senior Year when we went 3-8. I played under Duff and then under Vaas.
I can assure you your son made a phenomenal choice. Regardless of what's said on this board I bleed purple and want nothing more than for them to get back on top, and quite frankly your son is part of a recruiting class that will help get us there (along with the other classes that are here, but I point out this class because from top to bottom it is the most talented - at least on paper - hopefully that will come to fruition)
No one earns the right to suck the life out of anyone - specifically Sarasota. Questioning decisions however on each game can be healthy when constructed in the right framework. It's part of the business. Over the past few years we haven't had the success we are looking for, but this year after what I saw last night gives me hope we can start the turnaround now.
Congrats to you and your family on your son's success. You're son earned every penny and I couldn't be happier to have scholarships back in Football. Sarasota - the nonsense about the high horse is tiresome. Honestly it would be a happy day if Dean Wormer decided to get rid of your posts.
These days I'm pretty much sticking to the Recruiting Posts because Breezy is a wealth of knowledge and it keeps my mind on where we are heading not where we've been. Trust me in saying your son will develop friends for life in playing football at HC.

Dear Mr. Lang: Thank you for the courage to speak up and denounce the negative spirit of so many posters on this board. I know inter league transfers are verboten in the PL but consider a transfer to the other Jesuit School in the conference. Our board is full of sweetness and light. We never disparage our coaches, when they suck we give them extensions. When they're good they leave for Notre Dame or Penn State and we always remember them fondly. No cynical second guessers in the Boogie Down, no siree Bob.
Our posters boast about our quaint facilities and state of the art football stands
Think about it, if all goes smoothly we could welcome you and your family to the pastoral splendor of Rose Hill and away from the industrial morass that is Worcester.
As we say in NY, I aint sayin, I'm just sayin.

The turning point in the game was the missed field goal followed by the horrific running into the kicker penalty. Following that sequence, we couldn't get our defense off the field and we just got worn down by a bigger, stronger, faster 1-A football team. Blaming Gilmore for leading the team to a halftime lead over a 1-A team is laughable. This is probably a make or break year for TG and the outcome of tonight's game should have no impact on that one way or the other. The one thing that tonight does tell us is that we could be seeing a much improved squad compared to the last handful of years, and I am looking forward to seeing the team in the first true test that means something next week @ Bucknell. That being said, we need to get a lot better on 3rd down and being able to convert plays in tight spots. It feels like a broken record now, but those plays have been killing us. Dom Randolph could hit receivers in tight spots and deliver the ball into tight windows. I just think we need to see more of that to turn the corner this year and win close games. Good outlook. Getting back to the game one last time, it is difficult to assign the blame for the loss entirely on the shoulders of TG. It has been a make or break year for the last few seasons and I understand everyone's frustration. We lost because of a combination of factors including officiating, no review of the 1st down, players missing FG's, a former QB fumbling a catch at AT, and poor decision making by TG. I want to give him the first few games and see how he does. No jumping to conclusions yet, but if we start the season 0-2 or 0-3 we will be done with him. Our team, especially the last two recruiting classes are too good.

I think it was 4th and 3 or 4 to go. We go for the long field goal and miss. Turns out those 3 points would not have been enough anyway. At the time, I wanted to go for the first down, to continue the drive

My observations - in general, a very encouraging performance and a 'W' if Edsall does not make that qb change = remember we did not have any long td drives - both came on short fields after uconn fumbles. = our 2nd td drive was particularly fortunate as uconn accepted an off-sides penalty, and on the re-kick they fumbled = our kickoffs were good but place-kicking and punting not so much (don't look at the stats) - mcgrail punted much too low with no hangtime and this led to a couple of long returns at this level you should make a 38 yd fg with no weather issues. that one hurt = winning the turnover stat was critical, but it turned out our one t/o might have been a difference maker = the line judge on that bogus 1st down by uconn should be reprimanded. there are ways to report such things (not that it helps now) = general hc athleticism was impressive on both sides of the ball
= On to Lewisburg

I'm pretty sure I didn't knock the coach and I'm 100% sure I didn't knock the players. I did however, express frustration (and most of us do) that we've seen a lot of good efforts go by the boards in the past few years...especially towards the end of ballgames. As Casey Stengel once said about his expansion Mets "Been in this game one-hundred years, but I see new ways to lose 'em I never knew existed before.". Coaching? Talent? Luck? Some of each? In any case I hope that things start going HC's way for everyone's sake.

The only quibble I have with the missed FG attempt was that it was from the near hashmark, and a right-footed kicker has to drive the ball back toward the center of the field. But I don't know how the kicker does in practice on those sort of attempts.
As for conservative play calling in the second half, I'm okay with that. Trying to run down the clock against a team that wants to run up-tempo, and you have limited ability to substitute defensively between snaps.
I think the HC coaching staff did very well in preparing for a team with a new coaching staff, and no relevant film, to speak of. Do you look at tape from Auburn?

The day after.....overall, mostly a good performance by the Saders. The offense looked solid in just about all phases (QB, WR, RB and OL)....defense was mostly solid, very impressed with Riley (hope he's ok, hurt late...I grew up with hid Dad who was a QB for UConn ironically).
The frustration just lies, once again, in blown opportunities....Gilmore didn't necessarily "lose" the game last night but last night's game was yet another example of his coached teams pulling defeat from the jaws of victory. Until this becomes a rarity instead of the norm, I still maintain we are better served moving forward with another head coach.
On to Bucknell (a must win).

I thought the team played very well and I am encouraged that they have improved over last year.
But:
First Half - Holy Cross 20 UCONN 7 Second Half - Holy Cross 0 UCONN 20
In the last 5 years, in games decided by 7 points or less, our record is 6 wins and 22 losses (78 % losing percentage).
As I have said before, Tom Gilmore is a bad game day coach. No half time adjustments or reaction to the other teams adjustments.

Say what you will about halftime adjustments, but we had 128 yards of offense in the fourth quarter alone. Squandered some opportunities and didn't score, which of course looks bad, but it's not like we didn't move the ball late. I'm disappointed we couldn't finish it off, but I was and am pretty damn happy with a lot of what I saw. Lots of deserved compliments about HC to me today at work.

It was exciting for me to watch our guys play a BCS team close. I wonder if we could have scored a TD on the first drive of the second half if we could have knocked the spirit out of the crowd and prevailed. (Of course, maybe RE goes to Shireffs quicker.)
I am not a huge TG fan, but I have no huge complaints about this coaching. UConn fans might argue that RE was the coach who really screwed up thinking his JUCO transfer was ready for prime time.
By the way--3 1/2 hours--that is absurd. It does get boring in the stadium waiting for them to come back from TV time outs.

Some observations after recovering, I think, from another close loss and having walked in the door at 1:00 am and then getting up for early scheduled appointments (poor planning on my part). *: Off the top of my head perhaps two people on the board said the Crusaders would win and even they indicated that it was more hope than expected results (RGS and ChuChu, I think). The rest of us, including me, thought we'd lose this game and a 7 point loss was closer than even I thought. Most were seeing this as a 20-25+ point loss. So, whether you like how it happened, the game was closer than just about every nay-sayer here said. Would you have all felt better if UConn scored 27 points in the first half and then we scored our 20 in the second half? Look, they made most of their mistakes in the beginning of the game, including their choice of starting QB. Our mistakes happened mostly in the 2nd half. Remember, I said that we had a puncher's chance if they made more first-game mistakes than us a la our last win against West Point. *: I disagree with those who said before the game, and one observer posted after the game, that UConn was so much "bigger, faster, stronger, more athletic" (cue the 6 Million Man slo-mo opener). I repeat, if we play this game 2-3 years from now, we beat UConn handily. We are on an upward trendline in recruiting as LAC and more focus on the program will improve results. Them, not so much. *: This game was not lost because we missed a field goal. We lost by 7. The FG would have made it a 4 point loss. *: The turning point in the game was the running into the kicker penalty. It was on the far end of the field, so I cannot opine on whether or not it was a bad call but I followed the ball off the punter's foot and he was standing as the ball traveled down the field. Instead of us stopping them, they got a second life and went down the field and scored. Gigantic momentum shift to the point that I could "feel" it at the time. It was an "uh-oh" moment! *: Our defense did extremely well. Sure there were some missed tackles but they sure seemed a lot fewer than in the past. A lot of gang tackling and good pursuit. *: As for the long TV timeouts and when you are in stands they seem even longer, I remarked that those could inure to our benefit. I saw two things helping our defense: 1. our offense was taking more time off the clock than usual and 2. the TV timeouts helped our defense rest. Our defense came up with big stops on more than one occasion. *: Yes, it would have been great to have left Rentschler with a win. But that would have a surprise to some and a shock to many. With yesterday's results, very few should feel a need to change their season predictions. *: As for our freshman player's Dad's post: like in politics, there are a few, very vocal people who are not in the majority but sound like it. The commonality is we all want to see the football program succeed. Don't give up on Crossports, Mr. Lang (you could learn how to use the ignore feature).

Some observations after recovering, I agree with everything, sader1970. One other huge "turning point" was the Blaise Bell fumble. That's just football. The coaches had our guys ready last night. They played with poise and represented Holy Cross very well. Although we lost, I have to believe that our guys gained confidence from this game. They will learn from their mistakes, and we will be a force to be reckoned with as the season progresses.

I have seen this game so many times before. HC showing brilliance with the wonderful young men on the field in the first half. Tough D, hard working offense, talented skill players. Only to watch the other coaches make half time adjustments (jam the receivers, jump the slant routes, wear down the D with short passing to backs, slot receivers). Last year this happened against UNH and Albany. This man simply is not a good game coach in todays era. College football has changed in the past 5 years (See SI's article on Nick Sabin November 2016). He has not changed with it. His record in the scholarship era is awful against winning teams.
Because of the talent and hard work of our wonderful young men who represent us, we will go 4-2 in the Patriot League. But we owe them more than that. They deserve a shot to win against the top teams such as Lehigh and Fordham and UNH. When talented young men such as Cozier, Alexander, Walker barely touch the ball in a half when you score no points, you have to wonder who is making these decisions.
Sorry friends, this is bigger than a missed field goal or a bad penalty. Please take a look at his record since HC awarded scholarships against winning teams. There are fundamental problems Mr. Pine has not yet addressed. And he is not doing his job by not doing so.

The team played better than I expected but I'm bummed at the missed opportunity to generate some much needed buzz for the program. I'm also concerned that the team doesn't know how to win.
