Is anyone aware of HC's usage of scholarships in the baseball program? I know D1 teams are allowed 11.7 per year, but I can't imagine HC comes close to awarding this many. Even if you don't know actual numbers, does anyone have a sense of how many we typically award per year, whether certain players get half scholarships or more, whether they're slanted toward pitchers/catchers, etc.?

I think the answer is closer to 0 baseball scholarships That's what I assumed (i.e., fewer than 5.8 per year), but are you saying you don't think they typically award any?

I was under the assumption there were athletic scholarships for hoops (M+W), ice hockey (M+W), and football
I believe that is it for guys. There are probably some others for women because of Title IX and football

There are probably some others for women because of Title IX and football HC has scholarships for most women's sports. Also according to various reports, they have some for men's soccer and lax.

You say 11.7 per year---if 11.7 is correct, I'd think it would be for all four classes in school as I can't imagine any school--even the baseball powerhouses--having 45 players on full scholarship.

Hop Riopel had 2 scholarships...yes, TWO. That gave HC 8 baseball scholarship athletes on the team. Those were some amazing teams back then. Of course that was back when HC had many multi-sport athletes and some had scholarships in other sports (like John Wendelken who was on scholarship for basketball and started for the baseball team).

Yes, 11.7 is the max of all scholarships in effect at one time. Can be broken up over as many as 27 players. Here is the max number of scholarships for each sport: MEN: Track and Field/XC ......... 12.6 Golf................................... 4.5 Lacrosse........................... 12.6 Soccer................................ 9.9 Swimming and Diving....... 9.9 Tennis................................ 4.5 Water Polo......................... 4.5 Wrestling ........................... 9.9 Baseball.............................11.7 (limit of 27 counters) Basketball ...........................13 Football ............................. 63 (limit of 85 counters) Hockey................................18 (limit of 30 counters) WOMEN: XC/Track and Field ............ 18 Field Hockey ...................... 12 Golf...................................... 6 Lacrosse.............................. 12 Rowing ............................... 20 Soccer................................. 14 Softball ............................... 12 Swimming and Diving......... 14 Tennis...................................8 Volleyball..............................12 Water Polo........................... 8 Basketball.............................15 Hockey............................... .18 (limit of 30 counters) Note: partial scholarships can be given in almost every sport except basketball. It is somewhat rare for a PL school to issue the max number of scholarships, except in basketball and almost in football, but it does happen. Boston U maxes out on lacrosse, field hockey, and likely soccer. American maxes out in field hockey and volleyball. Lehigh and Colgate both approach the max in lacrosse, and Loyola (of course) is always at the max in Lacrosse.

I doubt there is another league in the country that has such disparities among the member schools when it comes to athletic grants by sport. It really makes the 'playing field' in most minor/olympic sports very uneven.

Billy Doran, Colin Clapton, Mickey Connolly, Peter Columbo, Neil Solomon, Mark Roman, Pat Bourque, Ralph Willard may also be on the list It is a very long list, but that was then and with so many athletes specializing in one sport year-round, it does not happen much any longer. I see that as too bad for a small school such as HC.

I definitely don't have the time to compare leagues, bur I know the MAAC also has some very big disparities in the olympic/minor sports. Even a league like the Big East has some big differences.

Lafayette gives scollies in baseball, looks to be about four full equivalents. Georgetown is roughly the same ballpark at Lafayette. Georgetown's operating expenses are about $200K more than Lafayette -- all that travel.
HC looks to have given 6-8 scollies in men's soccer. Fewer in men's lacrosse.

A lot of good info here -- thanks all. 137 (or anyone else) -- where do you get the info about number of schollies schools give in various sports? Is there a database or do you get it from reviewing schools' financial docs?

See the thread about National Letters of Intent for the purpose of identifying HC sports with scholarships. There were some for women's volleyball, soccer, track, lax, and men's soccer so far.
The amusing thing about these announcements is that nobody ever says they received a quarter scholarship. They all let everyone believe they got a "full ride" or a "full boat." I am convinced that HC should have a little bit of money to offer in every sport. I think some would take it and come just so they could go to the LOI ceremony at their school.
