I'm pretty certain that by next year Faw, Grandison, and Niego will be playing with stronger bodies, once they get a dado like strength training program under their belts. In the meantime, I am very encouraged with what they have shown us so. Let's not go too crazy worrying about the last 14 minutes; we knew going in there would be ups and downs. Love that Niego shook off his first shot (air ball) and competed like he did. How bout the handle for a 6-8 kid! jeff oliver and company are pretty solid, nad, and our guys will definitely get stronger. i only caught the first half and first few minutes of the second half, but i was very encouraged in light of how many freshmen were on the floor for us. i felt like we were getting a glimpse of what carmody has put together as we were really playing well against a much more experienced team.

Didn’t expect a win today, and for the first thirty three minutes, they competed very well. They played with confidence and were not intimidated by a more experienced team. Don’t recall ever seeing 5 frosh on the floor at once at HC! Glad that Niego got the opportunity to show he’s a decent player. Still a lot of work to do, but we are far ahead of what I expected! Going to be a fun two years.

Classic tweet from our friend Runnin’ Rhody after the game: Runnin Rhody @loveri401 · 2h URI smacked Holy Cross silly without E.C. and without Cyril Langevine, how not surprising I wonder why he did not mention HC was without our top player. Sorry, I forgot...Runnin Rhody is an idiot.

Not defending the guy but I am sure his main point, even though we lost our best player, was that they were playing without their two best players.
The score was not indicative of how close the game was and I was impressed that we were down by 8 in the first half and getting totally outplayed and then went on a tear and got ahead by two and the lead see-sawed back and forth and was close to halftime. We never gave up and the Crossporters in the crowd were very surprised to see 5 first years on the court at the same time. Our two PGs are outstanding and made some great assists with CG doing a great job shooting. Overall, the freshmen continue to look confident but will still be making the occasional rookie mistakes for awhile.
Ziggy looks like he is getting over his funk and think his upside has not been reached yet.
The future looks bright indeed despite the final numbers in this game.

Minutes per class today (HC/URI): Fr (103/21) So (13/39) Jr (84/18) Sr (0/122) URI has just one true freshman - Fatts Russell. Tertsea, while classified as a freshman, is in his 2nd year with the team. He sat out ly as a redshirt and is not expected to see much time this season. Rhody will lose five players to graduation this season. They initially already had five commits for next year until one player backed out of his verbal over suspected concerns about playing time once the others picked URI. The lynchpin of the class is top 100 prospect 6'9" PF Jermaine Harris from Maryland. Harris chose URI over Xavier. 6'7" G Tyrese Martin chose Rhody over Seton Hall. The other recruits are 6'3" PG Brendan Adams (younger and taller brother of A-10 POY candidate Jaylen Adams of St Bonaventure) and 6'7" SF Dana Tate who plays at the McDuffie School in Granby, MA. All four verbals are considered top 175 players and have signed their LOI. Rhode Island fans are very excited as this is likely the best recruiting class ever in Kingston.

And that assumes that Hurley will still be there. A team that got 122 minutes from seniors (with their best senior missing the game) and has 5 seniors avaeraging 25 minutes each per game is set up to have a very good season, which lines up the coach for a promotion if he wants it.
And Hurley was in the mix for Rutgers a couple of years ago and Georgetown last year. Anyone think all 5 come to Kingston if Hurley isn't there?.

You could however say that about a recruiting class at any school these days. Recruits commit to coaches more than they do schools. As for Hurley leaving, only time will tell. Some people have had him gone after each of the five years he has been at URI. He is now making over 1M per year and his buyout exceeds 1M. He has the program where he wants it and the pressure in Kingston is not as great as some other places. In fact, what pressure there was on him in RI was much relieved last year with the NCAA run. I think he will be very careful with his career choices. I believe he may be at the point where he would only leave for a high level plum job (ie Syracuse or UConn type job). I don't think he would now leave for a low level P5 job with a big rebuild in front of it. He hates losing too much.

Hurley probably not leaving URI anytime soon. He has a pretty cheap "base salary" at $300K. According to his extended contract through 23-24 season: For those who have an interest in what the financial situation is for assistant coaches at that level: Hurley can hire 3 assistants, 1 DOB and 1 videographer with a pool of $375K with bonuses for them totaling $20K or $25 K (depending on results). The 3 assistants can get $400 a month for car allowance. The terms of Hurley's contract (public record being a state university) can be found here: www.providencejournal.com/sports/20170516/uri-dan-hurley-agree-on-contract-extension-through-2023-24-season

The point is he was looking to move up at least the last 2 seasons, not that he was the favorite to get it.
And we'll see. A coach losing 5 seniors from a very good team has primed himself to leave.
As to the terms of his contact and leaving - telling the AD you're applying for other jobs is not a very big impediment and $1million buy out is just the cost of doing business for most Power 5 schools.

With Karl's absence from the line-up and 30+ minutes to fill, there were some things that surprised me
- Niego got off the bench in the Assumption exhibition about a minute before walk-on Powers. Did not play at all against Sacred Heart or Harvard and then made it in for 20 yesterday. He must have had some pretty solid practices. He exceeded my expectations yesterday
- Butler's minutes surprised me the other way. With Karl out, he seemed a likely candidate to pick up a lot of minutes. After starting, he got a real quick hook. Butler played most of the second half against Harvard and only 8 minutes total yesterday
- Green, Benzan, and Zignorski were on the floor together for large stretches yesterday. Defensively, Benzan was down low in the 2-3, while Green and Zignorski played up top
- There was a short period in the second half when there were five frosh on the court (everybody but Copeland). Thus was very short, but the next sub was LeSann (I forget who he want in for)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Hopfully Charles' problem is minor and he will be 100 percent for Wednesday afternoon.
With 5 guys living in greater NJ, players might have the option of Thanksgiving at home or teammate's home and finding their way back to campus Thursday evening. I don't know anything, just observing there's a Wed afternoon game in NJ and a bunch of players in that area

Is Caleb a candidate for a triple double ? Needed 5 more rebounds Sunday Probability ? When, if ever, has it been done by a Crusader ?

Is Caleb a candidate for a triple double ? Maybe. When I watched him a couple times last year, he didn't rebound at all - in hindsight, seems like he was following the coach's direction/strategy. He's also a candidate for another Rookie-of-the-Week honor, though Jordan Burns of Colgate had a big game yesterday and may have the edge. Announcement should come later today.

You doubt it is a hammy ? No, as I said, I doubted it was a cramp, as was still being speculated during the game thread yesterday. Hammy is a lot more consistent with what I saw vs. Harvard.
