We are a low-major team in rebuilding-mode....not a good combination for many W's....Carmody is a good coach but we are at such a low-level hoop-wise, it really doesn't mattah who is coaching this team.

We aren’t looking crisp on offense. Passing slow, seldom finding an open cutter. Players don’t seem sure of their roles yet. There is a split second hesistation when they catch the pass. “Should a shoot again? Maybe not. If I miss again I’m back on the bench. Should I pass? Maybe not. Should I drive?” All the split seconds add up during a possession, hence why we’re still running up against shot clock violations and getting poor looks at the end. Other teams pressing a little, even a light half court press, compound the problem. I think this is all mostly inexperience. Gotta be looser in mind, and sharper in play, and lay off the firing of 3s all night, and gotta have more creative drives from KC. For a freshman rich team, things should get better. Brutally boring game last night though, just a three point contest really. Not a fan of that style of play.

First off give Iona credit for a remarkable shooting performance. That being said, it was known going in that limiting the three point success was the key to winning the game. As things progressed and Iona continued to drain wide open threes I couldn't believe that we didn't at least try to go man to man. I'm not sure it would have worked because Iona was much quicker than us but it was obvious that what we were doing was not going to work. It seems to me that you have to be able to somewhat limit what the other team does well but last night we continued for the whole game to allow Iona to take uncontested three point shots. At this point Carmody does not appear to have any backup plan if his base defense is not working. On the positive side Grandison had by far his best game and Floyd had a really good 2nd half. Think Butler needs to get more time as he appears to have the potential to be a consistent scorer which is something we need desperately. As someone noted earlier at this point we don't have a star player who we know is going to give us 15+ points each and every night.

Charles needs to step up and give the team that 15 points most nights. If he finds a way to do that and the frosh get a bit more experience and confidence, things could be a lot better come February. If NEITHER of those things happens, we could be looking at an 8 win season.

Opponents making contested threes is one thing; no much you can do about that. It's the fact that they were mostly wide open looks that is concerning. A high school JV player can make wide open threes. Have to get a hand in their face. Why we aren't/can't is over my head, maybe we're not rotating correctly in the zone. Usually it's a matter of the opponent driving between defenders and kicking out when they collapse. One of our coaching posters can comment.

Sit KC vs Siena. If he’s too hurt to contribute now don’t use him in these “exhibition” games. Get him well for the season opener vs Coldgate.

Poor defense and we take too many shots as the clock shot is at 2 or 3 seconds left. You can't let the other team keep shooting open 3 point shots, you need to get in their face.

My first thoughts exiting were 1) Basically slow rotations leaving wide open 3's 2) General lack of awareness of the shot clock. The fans were pretty good about counting it down and yet too many times there was no thought of shooting with 2 seconds left. -------------------------------------------------- On a totally unrelated note - I don't think I've said it lately, but thanks to bfoley82 for sharing your photos

We rank in the bottom ten in both offensive and defensive rebounding percentage. Barf. Not to mention we barely get to the line, and when we do, we are hitting just 64% of our free throws. Barf again. Only 3 guys really go to the line (92 out of 130 attempts), Benzan, Floyd and Charles. One is a good foul shooter, one is at the 64% average (poor for a college guard, quite frankly) and the other is at a high school jv level (girls) so far. Green only has 14 attempts and he is at the same level as Benzan; of course, 14 attempts don't tell you very much.

We were out-talented last night by a wide margin True enough ncaam. When what is essentially an all-star team with several graduate students and transfers from other programs takes on a team that is as young as HC, this can happen. If it is still happening in March, I will be more concerned. Patience. For those of you who dislike HCBC and his style of play, I know that won't matter. Try to see some of the positives...the development of Butler and Grandison for starters. Floyd's game continues to improve. The team looked better in the second half and was able to get the ball into the paint for a shot or for the pass back out to a man who had an open 3. On the year, Iona has been a stronger team in the second half of their games this season. Last night, HC outscored them in the second half (and scored almost double what they had in the first half). Those are positives. Yes, there is a slight hesitation with the ball at times and last night that was clear. Again, it does take time.

I think Jehyve may have missed his first two shots last night but he then went on to go 4-7 from the field. His worst FG pctg in any game this year was 4-8 versus UNH. Of course he is shooting inside the paint or dunking so that is a lot less variable than three point shooting, i.e. he is unlikely to have any 2-9 games.
I'd really like us try to get the ball to him more often. His FGA/40 is at 9.4, much higher than last year's incredibly low 5.9. Still, I'd like to see it at 12+.
He does get fouled a lot, as timholycross notes above, and has been an extremely low percentage FT shooter, but at least he draws those fouls and perhaps that helps get us into the bonus situation where hopefully Karl Charles will get to the line.

Good outside shooting will massacre almost any zone, no matter how well you play it. The fact that we did not switch out of it when the hole kept digging deeper and deeper is a bit concerning.

That zone looked a lot better for the first 15 minutes of the second half. Perhaps M2M would have been a bit better late on the first half, but against that sort of shooting (and crisp passing) it may not have been any better. I wonder why the coaches did not wish to try it. Perhaps they want the players to work at the zone defenses they are still learning, especially under difficult circumstances. These ooc games are still developing the frosh for PL play. That "second season" will be a better judge of how well the coaches adjust defenses.

Glad that KY mentioned, though in passing, JF had two thunderous game n your face dunks that at least temporarily juiced up the crowd and the players. When we got it down from 15 to 9 thought we might have had a chance but the Gael-force storm of 3s made that impossible.
AB seems to be finding more comfort in his long range shot and Grandison never seems to be afraid to shoot. I think he was in the game less than 10 seconds when he popped a 3.
Butler I observed doesn’t go a game w/o risking floor burns. His former experience as a QB is paying dividends as he knows how to take a hit. He’s got my vote for “Timex Man” for “taking a licking and keeps on ticking.”
While it might be misremembering but I thought our starting lineup did very well especially on defense as we had a small lead but it looked like Iona was confused on offense. That played well for 8-10 minutes but when PB came in and we had our 2 short guards, it all fell apart. The 3s rained down and game over. Not saying due to PB as KC also left the court, I don’t care what anyone says, Karl is not 100%.

Carmody about Nana and Bucknell few years ago, I don't care how many dunks he gets we're going to defend the 3 (with the zone). He knows what he's doing, Iona terrific ball movement, any defense would have had a tough time stopping that shooting. #4 averaging 6 ppg, 22 last night

That "second season" will be a better judge of how well the coaches adjust defenses. Maybe, and I'm certainly willing to cut the staff some slack. But the defense was also not very good last year (or the year before, for that matter), unless we were turning opponents over at very high rate - a high risk strategy, which is not working now. So there's still some question in my mind as to whether the issue is with the player personnel or the schemes themselves.

A Milan Brown-esque quote after that performance last night. I’m shocked that “talking about it” but playing the same defense we play against everyone else didn’t work. The talk of Iona being some sort of “all star team” is comical. They were ranked #135 coming into the game, were on the road, and were on a 1-day prep, and we didn’t even make them break a sweat.

There's that, but they also just played St Johns in the Holiday Festival at the World's Most Famous Arena, so I'm guessing they were feeling pretty good about themselves and weren't too intimidated by the road game. Give Iona a little credit, they played a heckuva game

RGS roster building is a personal choice, while you and I would not want a roster full of transfers and graduate students there is nothing wrong with Iona choosing this route. To suggest that because of this factor last nights matchup was some kind of mismatch is ludicrous. Yes we are young but that's a result of playing with two empty classes one Carmody's fault and one he had no control over.

I watched closely last night, and it seemed to me Iona was quicker, faster, and hit just about every open shot they took...They were never able to put HC away, the 'Saders hung around all night..I saw some positives, JF is showing signs of being a domnant 5..His 2 dunks and a few jump hooks are going to be tough to stop in the PL. He showed flashes of big rebounds, physical play the team needs...The freshmen are playing pretty solidly..AB and CN have come a long way since the opener.. Is this team going to challenge for the PL title this year? NO..but we all new that going in...I see the team progressing, it is better than it was at Sacred Heart and new players area stepping up their games.. X's and O's....I think the defense is a tough one to play well...I would love to see some M2M or zone press..I saw CN move in the match-up from the baseline to the wing, to the middle, to to the opposite corner in one possession! That's a lot of movement in 30 seconds of D..Iona moved the ball very well, made it tough on our defenders..On offense, I would love to see us push the ball a bit more, and take some early open shots..We do have some guys who can shoot it, so let them shoot it! Stevens was suited up last night, will we get to see him play soon? I heard conflicting reports on his health last night...

-We are in the midst of our 4th consecutive losing season -We are currently ranked 304th in the country on KenPom -We are 3-7 against the 214th ranked schedule in the country, with our wins coming against teams with a combined record of 8-21 (.276) against D1 teams - with those 8 wins against teams with an average rank of 252. -We are dreadful on both offense (280) and defense (298) -We are 341 (out of 351) in both offensive and defensive rebounding -- stats that have far more to do with effort, intensity, focus, preparation, etc. than they do skill -The only two guys from the Soph & Junior classes who have made any type of significant contribution this year were recruited by the former coach
-We just got steamrolled by the 126th team in the country (6-5 record) in a game where they didn't even have to break a sweat and we offered absolutely ZERO resistance in allowing them to play exactly how they wanted
Yet, there have been comments that IONA was an "all star team" or that they never "put us away" because the game drifted down to 9 points in the second half before they got it right back up to 15 (and could have made it 25-30 if they kept their foot on the gas).
It's truly sad and depressing to see how far this program has fallen. I'd rather lose to Army 45-38 than watch this crap.
