[quoteI would guess that Holy Cross in ‘47 with starting center and MVP, George Kaftan, at 6’2”-3” might be the shortest ever for an NCAA champ [ March 23, 1957 Technically ,Tar Heels starting center 5'10" In the NCAA finals, unbeaten North Carolina starts the game by having 5-foot-10 Tommy Kearns jump center against Kansas' 7-1 Goliath, Wilt Chamberlain. [/quote] 7-1 1/16th to be accurate......

When I saw that HC lost in the Elite 8 and that it was their third game, I was surprised that there would have been a 32 team field that long ago. I looked at Wikipedia and found that there were actually 22 teams with some first round byes. There were four regions, two in the East and two in the West. We beat Navy at the Palestra and Wake in Raleigh before losing to LSU (which had a bye.) Lebanon Valley (!!!!!!) and Fordham were the others in our sub region. That was actually the first year the tournament was expanded beyond 16 teams. Lebanon Valley that year went 19-1 in the regular season, but played only their traditional type of opponents (F&M, Dickinson, Scranton, etc). They were originally told they would have to play Temple to earn a bid into the field but Temple refused. LV did go on to beat Fordham in the first round, however. Two bits of trivia about that Lebanon Valley team: (1) With a student body of 425 (including females), they are the smallest school to reach the round of 16; and (2) In their win over Fordham, the TALLEST player they used was 6-1. That likely is a record for an NCAA tournament game. That was one of the two best season in LVC history, the other being 1994 when Pat Flannery coached them to 28 wins and the D3 national championship. His star player that year was Mike Rhoades, now the VCU coach, who preceded Nathan Davis as the head coach at Randolph-Macon. I like looking at records of tiny schools like this one. They are a D3 football school now, but up to the mid 30s they played Penn State every season ...the last D1 opponents they played (if you could call it that then) were Temple right after WW2 and BC right before it.

Prior to the end of WW2, Penn State was not a football power and played many of the smaller PA schools. Bucknell beat them six straight games in the late 20's and early 30's - when Bucknell had strong teams - and Penn State actually wouldn't play them for a few years. PSU generally had mixed success against many of the PA schools.

I see that the PLN has the game starting at 1:00 pm. Our site says 2:05. Anyone know which it is?

I'd put more faith in HC's site. I could easily see the PLN not paying attention to things like having a Homecoming game at a different start time than a typical Saturday.

On the original HC schedule, the game was listed as a 1 PM start - which obviously was changed at some point. The PLN apparently used that original schedule to set up the time and either hasn't been advised of the change or messed up.

Defense reminiscent of a pickup game.
Have to anticipate another run from Lafayette in the 2nd half.

We need more FGA from JF-- 3 for 3 in first half--unless Laf's defense on him is opening up spaces for teammates.
21 points for AB in first half
Lafayette 11/14 on free throws versus HC 5/5--don't like that discrepancy
