November 10th——Another battle of the alma maters. I believe this will be the 5th in the series with HC winning the first one in the 1948 NCAA tournament and Michigan winning the last 3 (1977 NCAA tournament vs. #1 ranked Michigan [when both John O’Connor and RP Jr. missed the game with injuries], 1988 Utah Classic [where Michigan lost to D-II Alaska in a monumental first round upset and took it out on the Scooter Tropf-less Crusaders in the consolation game...and went on to win the NCAA championship in March, 1989] and December, 2013 [where HC lost by 22 to an eventual Elite 8 Michigan team without AT who was out with a concussion]). I’m all Purple in these matchups. The trend line hasn’t been good for HC in the last 3 where HC has had to play without a key player or players and Michigan has had an NCAA tournament top 4 seed club. Hopefully, the Wolverines will struggle with first game adjustments Michigan’s second game. They play Norfolk state on Nov. 6 And in which we led at the half on a bucket by Charlie Brown. (His name was Charlie, Curt Gowdy, not George.)

And in which one of our opening hoops was a Michael Vicens slam on All-American Phil Hubbard

Assuming we are already playing Siena at the Hart (the home and home), I hope we get Norfolk State. This begs a good (great?) trivia question! When was the last time HC hoops played a non-conference opponent twice in the regular season?

HC looked very good in the first game at Mohegan Sun (80-55)...then dreadful in the second (78-90). Hartford did not seem to have a clue how to stop HC the first time and had learned fast by the second time around. If we face Siena twice, I hope we would do better.

Was at both games. Looked unbeatable in the first game and like we had a second '69 (football) hepatitis outbreak in the second.

IIRC, we employed a full court press against Hartford the first time. It was very effective and we win handily. Tried to employ the same strategy in the second game and the Hartford coach John ?? was ready for it and had his team well prepared to deal with it. The result in the second game was Hartford by double digits.

During the second half of the Mohegan blowout he kept yelling out a date over and over. Had no idea what he was referring to.....then figured out it was the date of the rematch. Guess he thought we were running it up in game 1.

I remember a while back when HC played BC twice in a week. The first game they got crushed at Conte, then the two teams hooked up in the loser's bracket of a tournament in Hawaii (Rainbow Classic?). The rematch was much more competitive, but BC prevailed. I believe that was one of the better BC teams with Troy Bell and Uka Agbai if I remember correctly.

Yes, looks like 01-02. That was the year HC lost to Kansas in the Dance, gave them a decent game.

And we were ahead with under 6 minutes to go.....took place @ IU in Bloomington, and Bobby Knight actually gave a pre-game pep talk to his hated rival Michigan.....Michigan then lost the next game to unheralded UNCC with a guy by the name of Cedric " Cornbread " Maxwell

Billy Doran rolled an ankle late in the second half which was critical in Michigan coming back to take the lead (Doran went back in, but the damage had been done). I believe it was Curt Gowdy on the NBC national broadcast who repeatedly called Charlie Browne "George".
Thirty-two teams in the tournament, and I believe Michigan was #1 in the national rankings. Although they didn't do the detailed seeding then like they do know, guess where we were seeded! Maxwell actually beat the Wolverines in the Mideast Regional final before falling (in a squeaker) to eventual national champion Marquette in the Final Four (Al Maguire's final game).

We must have been 8th in the Mid East to Michigan’s #1, and if they had done overall seedlings, we probably would have been 32 to Michigan’s overall #1 since that was where they were ranked in the final poll. The MOP was Marquette’s Alfred “Butch” Lee from Dewitt Clinton in the Bronx, a terrific guy

Box score for that game shows that we held Hubbard to 16, but Ricky Green had 35, 16-20 fg Chris Potter had a typical stat-stuffer game—20 pts, 7 rebs, 7 assists, 1 turnover, 3 steals. 40 minutes Michael Vicens—23, 8 rebs, 3 assists, 1 steal Billy Doran—14, 3, 2, 1 Charlie Browne had 3 blocks.and 6 rebs in 23 minutes Even without O’Connor, we outrebounded them. 32-28 We shot 52 %, but they shot 60 We were up by 1 at the half

Any chance HC will offer a trip package for the tournament as they did for Belfast? My wife and I hope to get up to see both games.

Perhaps one of the best summaries of a game that I’ve ever heard came after the HC-Michigan game from a young Bryant Gumbel: “This game was a story of two guards-one who was here (Rickie Green) and one who wasn’t (RP Jr.)”
