Any chance HC will offer a trip package for the tournament as they did for Belfast? My wife and I hope to get up to see both games. Not sure if you are referring to Ann Arbor or the Sun. The Sun has a nice hotel on site, with cheaper options nearby. HC did little last time there in terms of a reception before or after. In Ann Arbor, I’m sure Development will arrange a reception before the game, as they did in Syracuse and Chapel Hill. I’m 70% in for Ann Arbor, 99.999% sure I’ll be at the Sun. Heard they have crap tables there!!

We hope to make it to the Sun for both games there with some time either before or after at the casino.

Likely in Providence as well (there was one before the URI game) I will be surprised if there's a trip package to Ann Arbor with coordinated flights and hotel

Box score for that game shows that we held Hubbard to 16, but Ricky Green had 35, 16-20 fg Chris Potter had a typical stat-stuffer game—20 pts, 7 rebs, 7 assists, 1 turnover, 3 steals. 40 minutes Michael Vicens—23, 8 rebs, 3 assists, 1 steal Billy Doran—14, 3, 2, 1 Charlie Browne had 3 blocks.and 6 rebs in 23 minutes Even without O’Connor, we outrebounded them. 32-28 We shot 52 %, but they shot 60 We were up by 1 at the half Good call on BD going down in the second half.....no RP Jr, Okie, and then BD going down........but a very competitive game until the final 3 minutes in what was essentially a home game for Michigan.....not sure about # 32 vs # 1 ( we were ranked in the top 10 until the Holiday Tournament @ MSG ), but it was close..

78purple—I believe that our Top 10 ranking was at the beginning of our ‘77-‘78 season coming off the excellent ‘76-‘77 season in which the Michigan game was the last game. With Potter and Vicens as seniors and Ronnie Jr. returning for his sophomore yr., I believe HC was ranked as high as 9th at one point in the early season of ‘77-‘78 but the loss to G’town in the Holiday Festival and subsequent road losses to Providence and Fairfield by wide margins dropped us out of the rankings.

After that game at MSG, there was a sign on the WCHC booth high up in the Garden that read..."One loss can't stop the Cross. Go Crusaders!" In the second game they won a close game (for most of the game) against Fairfield, IIRC.

We beat Princeton in that second Holiday Festival game, 61-59 and fell to #16 nationally from a high of #12 preseason #18 all AP standings

That second big loss in a row that season was another to Georgetown, not Fairfield

The '77-'78 team had the unfortunate distinction of being the only team to lose to UMass during the Potter-Vicens era. The Cross was ahead by one with only seconds left in a game at the Hart Center. Garry Witts was somehow tied up for a jump ball, he appeared to be fouled by the UMass player bear hugging him in the corner. The jump ball was at the UMass foul line and the tap went back towards midcourt. A UMass player grabbed the loose ball and as he was heading towards midcourt, whirled in midair and launched a prayer that caught nothing but net as the horn sounded. UMass was very strong during that era with players like Eldridge, Claiborne, Pyatt and Towns. They may have already cast their lot with the Eastern Eight by the '77-'78 season.

Pyatt played for Bishop Dubois in Manhattan., a Manhattan -Bronx CHSAA team, as was Potter’s Cardinal Spellman in the Bronx.

UMass was not good in '77-'78. They were a little above .500 that yr. It was the tail end of the Jack Leaman era which led to a terrible decade of UMass hoops under Ron Gerlufsen before Calipari arrived.

And we were ahead with under 6 minutes to go.....took place @ IU in Bloomington, and Bobby Knight actually gave a pre-game pep talk to his hated rival Michigan.....Michigan then lost the next game to unheralded UNCC with a guy by the name of Cedric " Cornbread " Maxwell In between HC and UNCC, Michigan beat Detroit in a close game. Coach of Detroit- Dickie V!

When he left they hit rock bottom as noted above.

hchoops The ‘77-‘78 back to back losses (the only consecutive losses that year) were to Providence 90-64 on 1/18/78 and then Fairfield with Joey DeSantis 123-103 3 days later on 1/21/78. Unfortunately, I remember them well since I was living in Shrewsbury at the time. The UMass home game mentioned above was loss # 4. Then a 2 pt. loss at Seton Hall (Bill Raftery was probably on the bench for the Pirates). The last 2 losses that yr. were to G’town on the road by 16 and an ECAC New England tournament loss to Providence sandwiched around a 99-98 win over BC.
A season that started with so much promise and 3 of the best HC players in my 52 years of watching HC hoops ended with a 20-7 record and without an NIT or NCAA bid. Perhaps, the record and performance reflected the value of Billy Doran and Kevin McAuley as seniors in’76-‘77.

Thanks Serves me right for relying on sports reference, which does not list d2 games. They must have considered Fairfield a d2(cannot find the fact book on the gohc hoops page) DeSantis was a teammate of Charlie Browne at Tolentine in the Bronx and played against Potter. I believe that the team really missed McCauley, a true pass first point. In 78 the offense ran more through Potter since Perry had to be the primary scorer. They missed Doran’s all around game, though Witts did a good job replacing his type of game though only a frosh

Interesting to note that they show the DCU as a neutral site.

I see a reference to a D2 game in the '77-'78 discussion. Fairfield wasn't D2 but Kings College was. HC ended up playing them as a make-up game after the scheduled trip to South Bend to play ND was canceled due to a snowstorm. Chris Potter hurt his ankle in the game and was carried off the court.
