FHCTG loses that game 100 out of 100 times. Did anyone else give any thought to Ng running around to burn those last 12 seconds? M hiaybe take the safety? Or have a DB or RB take the punt snap and do the same thing? Taking a safety unless you have wasted 12 seconds doing so would give them the ball back in decent, or better with a strong return, field position. A field goal would win it for UNH. 12 seconds is a long time to run around with not that much room behind us. I think they were too far away from the goal line to make that a good percentage play...if the los is inside the 20, yes. Very very very unlikely that a kickoff with under 5 or 6 seconds could result in a runback into fg range. Same for one play after a fair catch. And UNH didn't have a strong kicker either.

After a safety, it would be a punt , not a kickoff, which could possibly result in good position for a FG, especially with a good return.

Or even no return based on the last Ng punt

It's nice to see a great slugfest, defensive battle. Teams can't always score 30+ points. Look at this year's Super Bowl. QB is a problem on this team. 21-34 for 253 with 0 interceptions in his second career start against a solid team.Yes, the offense could not score a TD, but to me that was more a product of a weak running game. 62 yards on 35 attempts. Not that much of a QB problem Compare to our passing stats in last year's game vs UNH 18-33 for 130 with 2 interceptions
Not a perfect scientific comparison, of course, but still…...

Observations Great day at Fitton with one of the more exciting endings in many years Liked the new padded seats on the first 15 rows on the home side. Very comfortable Liked that they finally removed the purple tarps over the upper east end zone seats. Those tarps screamed "we can't fill our stadium" New concession stand under home stands....still need more. Lines were awful Good to see some minor cosmetic improvements like new Chain link fencing around stadium Field was in impeccable condition UNH travels well Defense was simply outstanding Offense still has a way to go Overall, optimistic on the trajectory of the program

WORCESTER — Former St. John’s High star linebacker Liam Doran played in just one game as a freshman last year for Holy Cross, but after a productive offseason and impressive preseason, he shot up the depth chart and started HC’s 2019 opener last week at Navy.
The 6-foot-1, 225-pound Doran was in on several big tackles early in HC’s home opener Saturday against the University of New Hampshire at Fitton Field, and he and junior safety Joe Lang combined on the play of the game with less than two minutes left.
The Wildcats were up by four and had just taken over on downs at their own 2-yard line. Freshman quarterback Max Brosmer handed off to sophomore tailback Carlos Washington up the middle, when Doran plowed through to knock the ball free.
Lang recovered the ball in the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown, and Holy Cross held on for a 13-10 victory.
“It was a good play call,” Doran said, “we were blitzing up the middle. I got free — our defensive line played great the whole game — and I just saw an opportunity, hit him and the ball came out.”
It was playmaker Lang’s first career touchdown, HC’s only TD of the game and a fitting finish. Coming off last week’s 38-point loss at Navy, the Crusaders persevered against UNH. The Wildcats had won five of the last six in the series, including last year’s 28-0 triumph in Durham.
“These guys never wavered,” Holy Cross coach Bob Chesney said. “No matter what situation, they’re facing these guys fight hard. The resolve of this team is something that they all commit to, they all believe in, and they believe in each other.”
The Crusaders drove inside the UNH 10-yard line twice and settled for Derek Ng field goals both times, and the Wildcats took a 10-6 lead on Washington’s 19-yard TD run with 6:52 left.
Holy Cross responded with a nice drive as sophomore quarterback Connor Degenhardt completed passes to classmate Tenio Ayeni, and senior running back Domenic Cozier had a 13-yard pickup.
On fourth-and-4 from the UNH 39, Degenhardt made a big-time, 28-yard completion to senior tight end Derek Mountain. The Crusaders got as far as the 9. On fourth-and-8 from there, sophomore Jack Jewell caught a pass from Degenhardt, but came up just short of the first down.
The Wildcats took over at their 2, and HC’s defense went to work.
“We practice ripping the ball out and getting turnovers every day in practice,” Lang said. “It’s one of our goals every day, and we keep track of it every day, how many strips, we get how many interceptions, we get how many turnovers we get. I feel like that translated to today, especially in a big situation. Liam ripped the ball out in a big spot. It’s a tribute to how he practices, how we all practice.”
HC sophomore cornerback John Smith halted a UNH second-quarter drive with an interception in the end zone.
Lang, senior safety Corey Stefanik and sophomore defensive back Terrell Prince each had six tackles. Doran added four, one for loss.
Degenhardt, making his second career start, was 21 of 34 for 253 yards.
He said he felt more comfortable as the game went on, but, “we need to finish these drives,” Degenhardt added. “We’ll got into the bye week and keep working on it and finish with seven instead of three.”
HC is off next week and returns to action Sept. 21 at Yale.
Late in the third quarter, after Degenhardt hooked up with Ayeni for 29 yards, the Crusaders executed a pretty double reverse that resulted in freshman receiver Ayir Asante, who took the initial handoff, hauling in a 29-yard throw from Degenhardt.
“I was happy when I saw that one come in from the sideline,” Degenhardt said.
The Wildcats were called for roughing the passer on the play, and HC got the ball at the UNH 4.
“When you just can’t punch the ball in the end zone, at some point in time, you need to gain momentum, you need a little bit of a boost,” Chesney said. “It was a great play by Coach (offensive coordinator Patrick) Murphy at a great moment. It didn’t result in a touchdown in the end, but at the same time you can see with a tricky play all the different pursuit that the defense needs to have to come up with a play to stop us.”
Degenhardt’s 62-yard completion to sophomore Spencer Gilliam set up the Crusaders inside the UNH 10 late in second quarter. After a pair of negative runs and an incomplete pass, Ng’s 28-yard field goal put the Crusaders on the board with 2:31 left in the half.
HC led, 3-0, at halftime.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Bret Edwards started for UNH and played the first half. Brosmer played the second half. Washington carried 18 times for 111 yards.

UNH Point of view:
DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire football team's defense turned in a big effort against Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon at Fitton Field, but it was not quite enough and the Wildcats dropped their season opener, 13-10. UNH interim head coach Ricky Santos made his debut as the leader on the sidelines. Santos took over as head coach when Sean McDonnell announced on Aug. 26 that he was taking a leave of absence to deal with health issues. The Wildcats face the University of Rhode Island in their home opener in Wildcat Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. Group tickets with options including all you-can-eat-barbecue seating in the Touchdown Tents, [nice feature] is available/ Sophomore safety Pop Bush (Nocatee, Fla.) had nine tackles Saturday to lead a Wildcat defense that gave up 315 yards of offense and did not allow a touchdown. Sophomore running back Carlos Washington, Jr. (Fort Washington, Md.) carried 18 times for 107 yards and scored UNH's only TD on a 19-yard run in the fourth quarter. That score gave the Wildcats their only lead at 10-6 with 6:52 left in the game. Bush and the UNH defense stopped Holy Cross on the UNH 2-yard line with two minutes left in the game. But on the next play, a UNH fumble coming out of the end zone was recovered by Joe Lang for the winning score. The Wildcats used a pair of young quarterbacks in the game. Redshirt freshman Bret Edwards (Lowell, Mass.) started and played the first half. Freshman Max Brosmer (Roswell, Ga.) played the second half and led UNH on its scoring drives to a field goal and the TD. Brosmer completed eight of his 16 passes for 106 yards. Edwards completed seven of his 18 for 97 yards. Each had one pass intercepted. "First and foremost, our kids fought all the way to the end," Santos said. "You've got to give credit to the senior leadership. I thought the defense did a phenomenal job of giving us a chance to win. That team we faced today played their butts off. That's a great-coached team and they played hard." The Wildcats turned the ball over three times, but were unable to collect any turnovers themselves. "At the end of the day we've got to be cleaner," Santos said. "We had too many penalties and we had a couple of turnovers. We didn't do a good job getting the ball out. The theme of the whole game was missed opportunities. On offense, we have to be much better. We've got to be better at the quarterback position and we've got to be smarter with the ball." Holy Cross is now 1-1 on the season.

Texas is running into the exact same issues Holy Cross did on offense. I guess the Shotgun spread inside the red zone is in vogue at all the coaching conventions.
Ehrlich is more of a power runner that gives them an extra man at the point of attack... HC really had no strategy in trying to gain an advantage in these formations and it’s interesting to compare the thought process and effectiveness at the higher levels

Congrats gentlemen never thought we would beat our self but that’s what happen. A really bad loss for UNH but a game we deserved to lose. 2-2 after the four year series very impressive for Holy Cross for UNH embarrassing. Enjoyed my trip to Worcester minus the Cats handing you the game. It would be great to see you guys get a nice facility for the quality young men that play for your fine institution. I must say I was surprised by the cushioned seats and no chair backs. 30.00 for cushion on a bleacher your season ticket holders deserve better! Best of luck the rest of the way!

Thanks for the sort of compliment. Giving the game away is one interpretation Another could be a correct defensive.call, a wonderful strip tackle and great hustle for the loose ball. Is there anything else wrong with Fitton besides the lack of chairbacks ? What is the number of chairbacks your stadium has ?

Fitton Field is the second oldest college football stadium in the nation, I believe. It's a grand old lady. Before there was a DJ and raucous rap music (although I did find myself bee-bopping to the beat) there has been a ton of quality football played there and much more to come. Plus, it's been debt free for a century. It's sturdy, it's safe. it's affordable. It's used five or six times a year. It's great.

Do hope Chesney takes a more active role in offensive game planning and calls. Would have won by a decent margin with even average OC play calling. Our D was really impressive. The margin against Navy was much more due to our inept offense. On another note, Fitton could use a makeover but honestly the track around UNH stadium has a D-3 feel to it.

No turnovers for the good guys vs 3 for the Wildcats including the catastrophic fumble in the 4th qtr. Think Coach Santos and the UNH OC are questioning themselves why they did not have their QB under center at that point to execute a few QB sneaks and gain a little breathing room. Not unlike a golfer in a close match, winning a game like yesterday's often is as much determined by your opponent making key strategic mistakes under pressure that you capitalize on than anything else.
2 penalties for the good guys.
These stats speak to disciplined football and strong coaching.
I would also maintain that the performance of the Crusaders in the 4th quarter speaks to better overall strength and conditioning by the Crusaders. MAJOR props to Coach Grautski on this front.
For those in attendance, do you recall seeing freshman linebacker Jacob Dobbs chasing down the UNH running back from behind on the far sideline in the 3rd quarter? If Jacob Dobbs does not make that play, the RB walks into the endzone instead of holding UNH to a field goal there. A whole different game as a result. No substitute for speed.
I am fully confident that the Crusader offense will be just fine. Connor Degenhardt certainly has displayed that he can throw over the top but as he and our receivers, some of whom were playing high school football last year, get comfortable and more acclimated to the college game, that will loosen up the linebackers and strong safety on the opposing team who clearly were stacking the box yesterday.
Would have been a tough L yesterday but that's why coaches constantly stress the game is 60 minutes (not 55, gentlemen . . . love the enthusiasm and support on this board but don't forget to exhale) and to hustle to the ball and the play. Joe Lang does not do that on the key play, then the ball goes out of the endzone and who knows what happens.
Also, a really nice touch on Coach Chesney's part to give the game ball to AD Marcus Blossom after the game when the team gathered to be serenaded by the band and sing Alma Mater. Fr. Boroughs was there next to ADMB and Coach Chesney as well to celebrate the victory.
9-7-19: Truly a great day to be a Crusader.

Amazing game, defense deserved to score the only HC touchdown, they played great. Some of the offensive play calling was questionable and needs to be looked at. We need to score some points on offense, by passing the ball around the field to our speed players. Degenhardt did not turn the ball over so that was good, but he really didn't make that many plays. But he was the winning qb. How is Oliver not given the ball at the 1 yard line? Take the win and move on, moving up in the rankings with the upset win. Did anybody notice how many students left that game at the half. I guess it was 3-0 but the ending was worth staying for. UNH traveled well, But HC improved their home win streak to 3.

Come on I realize your a fan of the Cross but if you think Holy Cross won and UNH didn’t beat themselves I’m not sure what game you were watching. We played a ton of freshman, played our third string center due to injury and were without our head coach a recipe for disaster and it was. Enjoy the win but please don’t go to the usual extreme of upsetting a team and thinking you’re ready for Alabama. It’s been since 2009 since the Cross made the playoffs. Maybe the long drought ends. 2-2 with a CAA team enjoy it!

Smart of UNH to make chairs part of their new facility (I assume they did otherwise the comment wouldn't have been made).
I do think it was silly for them to spend all that dough and keep the track. One of the best things BC did at Alumni was get rid of theirs. I can't believe there isn't enough land around that place for a track; it's not like they are running the Penn Relays up there and need a lot of seating.
Glad HC put in the cushions.
We built (or actually rebuilt) a fantastic bare bones football stadium in 1986...no bells, no whistles, more seats than needed and kept the original, awful press box to boot. Anyone whoever sat in the old one in the Carter era knows what I mean. Would love another Luth or two to emerge to make it 21st century, we shall see.
