It seems that Hargis played very little in the second half. Does any attendee know why ?

Also attended. Agree pretty much across the board with possum's observations. Hargis went to the floor a few times for loose balls, looked confident attacking the basket - the most pleasant surprise of the night. Pridgen's performance not so surprising - was our best defender, kept his man (soph Cal Connelly) scoreless, also looked best penetrating, established good rebounding position consistently. Lowder very good at the offensive end creating shots, especially on floaters and short jumpers, but truly awful defensively. Was a little surprised we didn't rebound better, especially on the offensive end. Faw is biggest concern for me at this point. It became obvious watching this team last night that certainly 3 and probably 4 freshmen are going to play an integral part in the success, hopefully, of this season. It is also obvious the group and the team as a whole, have a lot of work to do on their defense. The team also lacks size and could get outmuscled or overpowered, the former applying to our bigs and the latter to our guards, by physical opponents. It also appears our two sophs will play a lot especially considering the fact they rarely got off the bench last season.

Nelson pulled Hargis with about 14m to go in the second half and HC up, 54-50, then went to a quicker, four guard lineup (Lowder, Pridgen, Butler, and Wade/Reilly, with Verbeek, who came in for Niego at about the same time). Over the next five minutes or so, with those guys on the floor, HC stretched the lead to 73-59. MH didn't return - speculating that Nelson felt he was not getting it done at the defensive end enough to justify his presence at that point.
Verbeek stayed on the floor until there were about two minutes left. Also noteworthy, Reilly and Lowder played together for a few minutes in the second half.

I thought Reilly did a nice job defensively. He looked pretty quick and seemed to do a good job keeping his man in front of him. On a separate front, I don't recall many traps out top. The team spent considerable working on that at the open practice in early October.

We may not want to show everything in an exhibition that our early opponents may see on video if they had someone there taping

Reilly did do a good job on the Assumption point guard, who by the way is very good, he also handled the ball well. Didn't take any shots but I watched him in warmups and he seemed to have a nice stroke. I was surprised when Faw didn't start and was even more surprised by his lack of playing time. Unless there's some type of injury this is a development that needs watching. Given the lack of size up front this team desperately needs a good year out of Faw. Maybe Nelson is just trying to send a message.

I wouldn't read too much into the playing time - it is an exhibition after all - and I am guessing Nelson wanted to see a lot of combinations of players so he can get a better sense of what he has.
I would say, however, that it was important that HC come out of the game with a win.

Although it may be common, I still liked BN’s comment post game that we will not be the same team in January that we are now. Thus is especially true for a very young, very inexperienced team.

- Lots of mistakes on D
- Partially a function of that, but lots of fouls. In the closing minutes when fouling intentionally, Assumption was in the double bonus and still had a foul to give before HC could get into single bonus
- Niego picked up his second foul before the first media time out - sat for rest of the first half. Reading the box he played about 12 minutes in the second half, during which time he picked up two more fouls
- Faw was the beneficiary of Niego's foul trouble. All of Faw's shots were in the two foot range. I don't recall any being from a post position. More taking the ball to the hoop. Maybe a shot off of an offensive rebound, but not working the post. Conversely, the first shot of the game was Niego working the post. Verbeek also did some post work
- Speaking of Faw, there's a comment above about zero blocks in the box score. I can think of one really nice one that Matt had. My favorite kind because he retained possession.
- I know exhibitions are a chance to experiment with different groupings, etc, but the biggest surprise to me was that Yeutter backed up the point in the first half. I don't think Reilly got off the bench in the first half, and I thought he was supposed to be the back-up. He did back up in the second half and was OK
- Silly rotation stat: The guys who saw competitive minutes last Spring accounted for 73 out of 200 minutes yesterday. As we guessed, the new guys are going to play a role
- In general, the guys are more focused on boxing out on defensive rebounds and making an effort at offensive boards.
- I think Butler (who finished with 20) had 4 in the first half.

Addendum
I was anxious to see how rookie point guards would handle defensive pressure. Assumption didn't show any until the end after a made basket and time out
HC needed a time out to inbound the ball and even then, it wasn't the smoothest break of pressure

That would have been me, Tom. Not having re-checked, perhaps the box score has been amended?

Did the block by Faw go into the book as a steal?

I did attend, and saw a lot of things that prove positive in my eyes..The players play hard! We have some kids who can score the ball..Lowder is very good of the bounce, and finishes with confidence..He hits the 10 foot floater, and puts it up high in the sky! Wade can shoot it...Blake V. looks like he can help this team this year, he was aggressive rebounding and did score a few hoops at the rim, plus he can shoot it from long range..He got called, with an Assumption player, for a double tech..jawing at each other, after a physical play, nice to see that! Faw looks to me as he needs to be more physical, he falls off shots going to he hoop, and gets knocked to the floor too many times for a player of his size..I hope he will come around and gain the confidence he needs to play more physically then he does at the current time...Overall the team took the ball to the hoop to create their own shots of the dribble, much different than the last year..and they hit open 3's!
The team needs to play the M2M more to get more comfortable in it and start seeing and reacting, rather than seeing it, thinking it and then reacting..That will come with more experience..Lowder is most likely for the first time in a long time seeing plays where his speed and quickness can't recover for a mistake he makes..i.e. a freshman playing defense...It will come..There were numerous plays where HC defender rotated properly, but was a step late...I think this will change with more practice and game time..I think in the first half, the shot clock got below 10 on 2 occasions! A lot of confidence out there on offense! It was refreshing to see players going to the glass on offense..and putting a body on a blue shirt on defense..The freshman had some "bad" turnovers, freshman still making HS plays...but that will stop as they play more at this level.
I talked at half time with 3 local high school coaches (including Bob Foley, HC Alum and St. Johns coach) all long time coaches, and the common pieces of info I got were, they play hard, and fast. The M2M is not bad, just needs a bit a of time to get it all together and make the rotations sooner..Each liked the offense, attacking the rim. And all 3 thought this team will be very competitive in the PL this season...
Coach Nelson is putting together a solid team, not great talent, but this will be a very well coached team..One little thing he did last night that I thought was very important was coach situations..With about 3 minutes to go, he called a timeout..he wanted the team to play to finish the game off..They became a bit more patient, and ran their offense through, using the clock...managing the clock at the end and getting to the foul line! At one point HC had a 3 on 1 and Joe P. threw a behind the back pass to a wide open player at the 3 point line..Nelson reacted immediately, "What is that!" and then called Joe over and talked to him...It is this type of detail that will help this team as the season moves on...

BV may get manhandled at times this year....but he's got some spunk; really seems to be taking to the coaching. Really runs the floor too.

Left game with about 3 minutes left HC up 11....Verbeek played well in second half can really shoot it but has no strength and I fear he'll get pushed all over the floor against bigger players.... Ok, what has Verbeek been doing all this time at HC? Inexcusable if he hasn’t done significant weight/strength training. With top flight facilities, totally inexcusable. Is there a strength coach for this team to guide/instruct/drive?

Why do you think he has not been lifting? A strength is not necessarily looking to bulk up an athlete..

I think you're off in your commentary there jouts.
I think all who were there last night would agree that BV has indeed done some bulking up since last season as he is definitely more muscular than last year. No one will mistake him for Pat Whearty or Tim Clifford, and doesn't mean he won't get pushed around, but it is pretty obvious he put in work this off-season.

Agree with your thoughts. The kid has gone from being a twig to now rail thin. To assume he hasn't been trying to "bulk up" is very unfair. He is simply a very tall, very thin person who probably will never look like Patrick Whearty.
