Congrats to the 2019 Patriot League Champs. Hopefully this will serve as a great opportunity to land offensive recruits and a new OC that will push the program to new heights. . 43 - fwiw, I ran into one of the better prep coaches in the country Thursday night. He’s in Maine, and I played against him in H.S. in the 70s. He believes the OC is one of the better offensive minds in the game today. Like you, I played ball and I second guessed him a lot over the past two years. He’s there, we’re not; he know the kids limitations and calls plays accordingly. At the end of the day, they are champs and I will have a few tonite to celebrate that.

Great year by Scott James and his young defensive squad. Interested to see how we stack up in the FCS Playoff. Extremely bad timing to be criticizing.

For the love of God, can we all just enjoy winning the PLC today? Maybe just sign off for the night and wait until the off-season to start squabbling with each other over semantics.. so now you are an anti-semantic? i'm going to tell all my jewish friends about you!!!

Shifting gears...it was great to see the noticeably vocal student section that developed in the endzone today. Winning = fun = crowds. Also, the attendance number wasn’t homecoming/family weekend level, but today’s group was there to watch a game!

The debate should end. The jury can come in now and announce the verdict: Bob Chesney is an outstanding head football coach, one of the best in the country. Those of us who believed in him from Day One can put on a satisfied smile. Those who opposed his selection should just admit they were totally wrong and celebrate the championship

This year has to have the highest average attendance in while. The last home game of the year lately has only had about 2k or so.

This year has to have the highest average attendance in while. The last home game of the year lately has only had about 2k or so. What was the average attendance this season? If we start winning and win big, HC can easily draw in another 2k Worcester folks and another 2k suburban folks with an additional 2k b/w students alumni. Add on a few hundred more away team fans to see the HC product. That's an additional 6-7k per game with what we're already drawing. We should aspire to be the premier New England college program among the 6 states plus tri-state area! We could easily pack 15k into rival games like Harvard, Umass, Uconn, NH . . .

If HC could average 9-10,000 this day in age, that would be a huge success heading into the "Roaring Twenties". The quality and accessibility of live streaming continues to get better (not necessarily a negative) while the average age of our fan base continues to get older. I'm personally guilty of now not having made a game at Fitton for two straight seasons. Only made it to the BC game in 2018 and got to 3 games this year (Navy, Lehigh & Fordham) but all on the road. Definitely looking forward to bringing my girlfriend (hopefuly fiancee by next season) and daughter to a home game next year and in the near future. The Holy Cross bib was worn today by her during the Georgetown game.

Also, the attendance number wasn’t homecoming/family weekend level, but today’s group was there to watch a game! Excellent crowd today. I also noticed that there was a pretty good contingent of potential recruits on the field during warm-ups today. Among them were Eric Schon, a 2020 OL commit from St. Francis in upstate NY and Joe Rivers, a 2020 OLB/SS commit from Bishop Fenwick in Mass. Good to see the team’s success creating a buzz with both potential and committed recruits.

College football: Holy Cross shuts down Georgetown for Patriot League title, NCAA berth
By Jennifer Toland Telegram & Gazette Staff
Posted at 5:55 PM Updated at 5:55 PM WORCESTER — No play in Holy Cross’ game against Georgetown on Saturday exemplified the Crusaders’ desire more than senior running back Domenic Cozier’s second-quarter touchdown run.
Cozier took the handoff from junior quarterback Connor Degenhardt near the Hoyas’ 15-yard line, found some room to his left and, just short of the goal line, was swarmed by Georgetown defenders. Cozier was tripped, hit and pushed, but he fought through the pack and into the end zone for the Crusaders’ first points.
“I stayed up, and I said to myself, ‘I need to score this touchdown,’ ” said Cozier, who fumbled earlier in the game. “I owed the team. It showed our heart and toughness.”
Cozier scored two touchdowns, and freshman linebacker Jacob Dobbs had two interceptions, including one he returned 56 yards for a TD, as Holy Cross shut down the Hoyas, 24-0, to capture the Patriot League championship.
Second-year Holy Cross coach Bob Chesney hoisted the trophy, and the Crusaders celebrated their first PL title since 2009 with family and friends on Fitton Field.
“It’s amazing,” Cozier said as his mom helped fit a “Patriot League Champions” T-shirt over his uniform and shoulder pads. “You work for four years for this. I’m so happy.”
Holy Cross (7-5, 5-1) earned the Patriot League’s automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs. The Crusaders will find out their first-round opponent during the selection show at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
The PL championship is the seventh overall for HC.
“To bring it back for the first time since 2009,” Chesney said, “this team has a lot to be very, very proud of.”
Holy Cross had a chance to secure the league’s auto bid two weeks ago when they faced Lafayette, but turned the ball over five times in a 23-20 loss. HC kept its title hopes alive with a 49-27 win at Fordham last week. The victory fueled the Crusaders’ determination and set the stage for Saturday’s excitement.
“These guys,” said an ebullient and emotional Chesney, “their desire, their resolve, their commitment, their effort, their energy, those are words I think about every single day when we come to work. It’s a pleasure to be able to come in here every day, and to be able to do this with this team, for this school and for this community at this moment, it’s a special day.”
Chesney and players walked onto the field arm-in-arm with members of the Worcester Fire Department, who are mourning the loss of their brother, Lt. Jason Menard. Menard worked on Ladder 5 at the nearby McKeon Road station. Firefighters also took part in the coin toss.
Cozier carried 23 times for 161 yards and became the first Holy Cross running back since Jerome Fuller in 1991 to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season. On the year, Cozier has rushed for 1,050 yards.
“How about that kid and his toughness?” Chesney said.
Georgetown finished 5-6 (1-5 Patriot) and lost its last four games of the season.
The shutout was the first for Holy Cross this season, and the Crusaders held the Hoyas to 233 yards. Dobbs, senior safety Corey Stefanik and sophomore defensive end Dan Kuznetsov had early sacks to set the tone, and sophomore linebacker Liam Doran had a key tackle-for-loss on third down in HC territory in the first quarter.
Georgetown failed to take advantage of Cozier’s fumble and two drives that started in Holy Cross territory. Sophomore cornerback Walter Reynolds also had an interception and, after backup Hoyas quarterback Joseph Brunell completed a 15-yard pass to senior Michael Dereus in the fourth quarter, Reynolds ripped the ball out of Dereus’ hands and returned it 20 yards to the Georgetown 14. The play led to a 21-yard Derek Ng field goal and 17-0 HC lead.
“All season long, there have been opportunities,” HC senior safety Chris Riley said. “Sometimes we’ve taken advantage of them, sometimes not. Today, throughout the whole game, our defense took advantage of every opportunity we had. We got their offense off the field, and our offense scored enough to win the game.”
Degenhardt finished 10 of 14 for 144 yards. His 46-yard completion to freshman Ayir Asante set up Cozier’s second-quarter TD run.
Just 46 seconds later, Dobbs picked off starting sophomore quarterback Gunther Johnson and raced 56 yards into the end zone.
“I didn’t have to do much work,” Dobbs said. “They threw the ball right to me. (Sophomore linebacker) Liam Anderson made a great block, Corey Stefanik made a great block, (freshman defensive end) Thomas Kiessling made a great block. All I had to do was run down the sideline. They did all the work. It was an unbelievable play.”
Dobbs’ TD gave Holy Cross a 14-0 halftime lead. The Crusaders trailed by that score at halftime last week at Fordham.
“We’re never satisfied,” Dobbs said. “At halftime, we knew the game was not won yet. We came out and set the tone again.
“Ultimately, we wanted to make sure there was a zero on that scoreboard. That means everything. The fact we can come out here and play our best game of the year and shut them out in the championship game is unbelievable.”

It's a different world....today's crowd would have been considered horrendous in the 70s and 80s. ..it's not just HC though, Harvard-Yale was sparsely attended today compared to days gone by...

Maybe...but this is where we are. If you take it for what it is, today was a great day at Fitton with a solid (by today’s standards) crowd, that can be built upon with a track record of success.

I don't disagree....I think Ray-Bans can get Woo behind us somewhat....the problem though is that Fitton, like many Ivy stadia, is too big for FCS football in today's world....makes for bad optics

What a game made going to 11 of the 12 worth it. Dominating performance by the defense. Best thing was when two security guards came to the end zone with one minute left . They were like nobody is getting on this field. One kid jumps over and the guard grabs him. Everyone likes oh. Then another kid went over and everybody went. It was great to celebrate with the players and coaches on the field. Back in the stands a girl said to her mom, grandpa is on the field. What a win CHAMPS!!!!!!!! 7 times Punching tickets to the FCS Playoffs Not done yet Go Cross Go
