Are we all just pissing into the wind? I would be absolutely shocked if we were.

Holy Cross needs to bite the bullet and pay out his contract. He could not recruit before and going forward it will be worse. Execute on the vision and move on without Nelson. Hopefully, the vision is not to be mediocre. Stop counting pennies and pursue excellence. A winning program will ignite enrollment (Villanova and Providence jus to name two). Nelson is milquetoast. Getting rid of Nelson is an investment in the future.

He blows...has no feel for being a head coach and has the personality of an eggplant...HC hoop is going nowhere with him at the helm. After reading post after depressing post on this whole Nelson situation, I finally got a laugh.
Good one, hc87.
I think it captures Nelson's personality perfectly.

Enjoy reading the opinions others hold on matters discussed here. Good stuff. Thought though this board was intended to provide a forum for civil discussion. Looking back at the group rules I see that is in fact the case. The vast majority of opinions expressed are well within bounds. Have to say though some posts seem beyond the pale. Comments that denigrate reflect poorly on HC generally more than they succeed in supporting a poster’s view. Obviously up to the moderator ultimately.

I think Nelson is uncomfortable speaking with alums. Rather than solely a personality thing, I think if BN had started 29-3 instead of 3-29 and then had a normal non-Covid off-season to make the rounds of the regional alumni clubs and accept hearty praise and "welcome aboard" all spring, summer and fall his personality would still not be like a Jimmy Fallon but he would be comfortable talking to alumni. It really was a perfect storm.

One should not disparage Eggplants….they are fine vegetables and contribute to the well-being of society. Ever had Eggplant Parm at one of the fine restaurants on Shrewsbury Street?

Coach has lousy season. Some alums scream. Nasty comments about the coach are the norm. Cf. the title of this thread as an example. Coach is "let go." Another coach hired & has lousy seasons. More screaming & nastiness.. Another firing. And, another...The revolving door of coaches in & out continues. Round & round we go. And, the program's reputation continues to sink. HC basketball continues to flounder due in no small part to lack of stability. Repeating the same thing and expecting a different result is one definition of insanity. God grant us all the serenity.

Yes, the Boulevard, Mac's Diner (which I think closed) and Via. Also there was a restaurant built into a triple decker on Park Ave. that was owned by Kevin Condron, former chairman of the HC BOT that had great Eggplant Parm. Not sure if that still exists.

I don’t think there was a suggestion that eggplants are evil - nor that they are bad tasting. They are not necessarily known for their engaging personalities. In my experience - others may disagree.

Armchair psychology. If the coach is dour in his affect, wouldn't this come out in the job interview or statements about him offered by others ? I suspect Coach Nelson is broken hearted and feeling a lot of pain. No doubt his record of failure is weighing heavily on him and affecting his mood, his outlook.I suspect he is his own harshest critic. Maybe he is questioning his bona fides. Possibly, he is glum & uncommunicative because he is overwhelmed with failure. Losing would turn anyone sour. It's easy to dismiss this as psycho babble since he knew criticism goes with the territory. I get it.

If TPTB don't see this, any and all support should stop, and that needs to be made clear NOW.

I have nothing against Nelson personally. I really don’t care if he’s fun at a bar or not. I don’t care if he makes small talk with me. I just want him to build a program we can be proud of and win a lot of basketball games. He has not shown any ability to do that at Holy Cross.

I’m sure Coach Nelson is a fine human being. He seems to be great with his son and his wife, who sits in front of us at games seems charming. And I agree, this must be absolutely killing a guy who has been successful in his career up to now. Nobody should dislike the guy personally. He just shouldn’t be our BB coach.

Not sure about bars, etc. but an engaging personality can be an asset when it comes to recruiting; communicating positively to players; and spreading the message to press, fans, alums and the student body. Of course, it’s just one of many aspects SOME more successful coaches possess. Personally, I think we’ve had a weak roster for the last 10 years. As a threshold matter, it’s tough to recruit to a poor program and I have no idea if Nelson has lost battles with admissions.

Over the last 15 years we are 165 - 262 for a win percentage of 0.386, which includes all non-DI games. That reminds me of the NY Giants 1978 season and the banner that flew behind a plane over Giants Stadium during the final Giants home game of the 1978 season - about 3 weeks after the Joe Pisarcik fumble. Kit Hughes, President Rougeau, Rich Flaherty and Dr. Helen Boucher to paraphrase that banner ...
15 years of Lousy Basketball ... We've Had Enough!
Take real action to remedy the situation. You have to do more than change coaches.

If I were Nelson and knew I was coming back, I would go to KH and get his approval to post a video on the basketball website.
In the video I would apologize to the fan base for the lack of success that the program has had over the last few years and, without making excuses, would tell them that I and my staff were more focused than ever in changing that.
I would thank Gates for his incredible contribution to the program and say that, with most of the team returning, some big bodies returning from injury, a fine crop of incoming freshmen, and possibly some help from the transfer portal, that I am optimistic that things will turn around next year.
I would thank everyone for their patience to date and promise them that they will see the benefit of their patience and support next season.
(I think that would go a long way to making a bad situation at least a little better. It would also take some of the heat off KH. No real downside doing this because, if next year is another disaster he’s going to get fired anyway.)
Just a suggestion….

I will say that just acknowledging we have been bottom of the barrel bad for 4 years, we know it's unacceptable and committing to working tirelessly to get it turned around would be a good beginning. There is no sugarcoating 27-84. If he is retained and we just move on like there is nothing to see here, that would not be a good look.

Without looking it up, I am going to guess Ralph Willard's OOC record at HC was pretty good.
