The hardest thing back then was getting through the first year of life. You are right that infant mortality explains a lot of the low life expectancy.

Early in our history, the practice was not to name children until their first birthday. That way an important family name would not be "wasted."

I did some checking. The infant mortality rate was 100 per 1,000 live births in 1915. It is now under 6.
The maternal mortality rate was 700 per 100,000 live births in 1915 (for some reason a different measure is used) and it has been virtually zero since about 1980

To the extent Dr. Fauci was involved, kudos are well deserved regarding the stupendous success of the Moderna vaccine. 12 months (or less) for a successful (95%) novel coronavirus vaccine is quite something.

On January 13, 2020 Fauci's Institute is NIAID.
The nearly $1 billion in Federal funding that Moderna received for its vaccine through July 2020 came from BARDA, the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, in HHS. Fauci's Institute did not have funds appropriated to it for this purpose in FY 2020, but NAIAD is closely collaborating with Moderna on the development.
Pfizer's vaccine development was self-financed. However, Pfizer's partner, BioNTech, was funded by the German government. Pfizer is relying on BioNTech's technical effort, but BioNtech has limited production capability, which is where Pfizer comes in. ___________ The first of the Chinese-developed vaccines reported today that it had mixed results.

At least their vaccine did not contain lead (like the paint they once used on children's toys)...at least I hope not.

Sorry...pure sarcasm. It is not supposed to be a thing in the paint on children's toys either...but it was.

Back to vaccines, several studies published, pre-print, in the last several days suggest that vaccines will provide an immunity against the virus for years, perhaps decades. This has been determined by measuring T-cells and B cells in previously infected individuals www.nytimes.com/2020/11/17/health/coronavirus-immunity.html

This morning, I heard Dr. Fauci correctly explain how both athletes involved in passing the baton in a relay race are running when the exchange is made. We should let him know that if he can make sports analogies he is well qualified to post here.

Fauci appearing at a White House briefing today for the first time in many weeks Dr. Fauci was his usual excellent self and provided reassurance to any doubters that the unprecedented speed of the vaccine process did not mean the vaccines had been rushed thru the process or were unsafe. He was followed by an equally interesting and informative briefing by the General running distribution. He, in turn, was followed by the CDC Director who stated at least 10 or 12 times that the data and science did not support the closing of k-12 schools and colleges due to Covid. I found the briefing rather informative.

I found the briefing rather informative. The discussion in Connecticut seems to be focusing on the fact that schools are going to need to close because they don't have enough staff to stay open. Teachers, paraprofessionals, and cafeteria staff who test positive or who are exposed to children who test positive cannot work for a week or two. There is apparently a paucity of substitutes which I guess is not surprising.

While undoubtedly referencing K-12, Dr. Fauci had this to say two days ago regarding U.S. schools and Covid: Anthony Fauci, an infectious diseases expert and top advisor to the White House on the COVID-19 pandemic, said that he was for closing bars and restaurants but reopening schools in an interview on Sunday.
"The default position should be to try as best as possible, within reason, to keep the children in school, to get them back to school," Fauci told ABC News reporter Martha Raddatz, who noted that New York City public schools had recently closed down again due to rising coronavirus rates in the community.
"If you look at the data, the spread among children and from children is not very big at all, not like one would have suspected," said Fauci. "So let's try to get the kids back and try to mitigate the things that maintain and push the kind of community spread we are trying to avoid."reason.com/2020/11/29/dr-anthony-fauci-open-schools-close-bars-covid-19/

Marissa Gregg was director of the Samuel Adams brand for the Boston Beer Co. This may possibly portend something with respect to the college's future post-COVID gatherings!
