My guess is that Gates is a center, 30+ minutes, Rabinovich- 10- Faw is a power forward, 25 mins, Rabinovich- 15 When Coulibaly plays, he gets 15, Faw- 20, Rabinovich-15 Gates stays at 30. Martindale will be with the crowd at the 3. Based on Woo Gray’s posting elsewhere of a Christmas Day message from Fr. Boroughs, Louth Coulibaly won’t be coming to campus before January 18. It certainly is shaping up to be a lost year hoops wise for the young man. You have to wonder if anyone will be brought back to a college campus in Mass by our expected date to begin Spring Semester. So far, students already on campus are allowed to stay.

Assuming for the time being Coulibaly is out this year though he may well not be.
PG- Johnson 32, Humphrey 8 SG- Wade 28, Humphrey 12 SF- Butler 28, Montgomery 8, Townsel 4 PF- Faw 30, Martindale 10 C- Gates 32, Rabinovich 8
Quick note to any players’ family members reading this. I have not seen most of these guys play in person and really have no clue. Just trying to pass the time. Real minutes likely will vary considerably from this and any other projections here. I left Reilly out though I hope he earns some minutes. No idea if Humphrey is ready to be the backup point or if it will be Reilly or Butler or someone else. If Coulibaly plays, things get really crowded. Some guys like Martindale and Butler playing out of position as we’re still a little thin among bigs without Louth.

Interesting look at our "soon to be viewed" (God willing) lineup! Thanks.

It’s funny that, in a year when we feel so young, we’ll likely have two seniors and a junior in our starting lineup. Counting Gates as a junior given that he has already played two college seasons.

92, I agree with you 100 pct that conjecture on playing time is really pointless and unfair in many ways - I say we refrain from such an exercise - let’s wait for the first few games to be played

After a few games it does make more sense, but it can still (for some) be a fun pastime. In the past it may have been different, but I don't see that here.

I know positions are different from what they used to be, but Gates is 6-6; not big enough for a center.

I know positions are different from what they used to be, but Gates is 6-6; not big enough for a center. Bob Foley was 6’2” and Keith Hochstein was 6’4” on his tippy toes and they were very effective centers. Height can be overrated. Maybe Gates is very good at creating space around the basket. I have no idea as I have never seen him in action. Let’s not write him off as a center based on being 2-3” shorter than many centers. John Budris should have been one of the greatest centers in HC history based on his height.

You are quitenright that the play of the individual at center is, today, more important than height alone. I certainly agree about Hochstein (having seen him play many times). I can't believe he was 6'4" from the way I saw him handle so many taller players out there.

The height of the center is more important on defense, where a rim defender is needed...On offense, a smaller center can be part of a perimeter type offense, such as a penetrate and kick style..On D, an undersize center can be a problem, defending a "big", protecting the rim, and in general controlling the key...Gates wil bring a physical style (I hope!) to his game, and thus may be ablr to do some of the above....I'd love to see the big physical 6'10" or bigger guy who can rebound, block shots, and score around the rim.....i.e. Tim Clifford style....

Yep. After his introductory press conference, I told Brett “you know you’re allowed to recruit players taller than 6’8”, right?”
He said that was going to be one of his top priorities.
Never got the impression that Carmody put much stock in height.

I cannot imagine that any coach is not keenly interested in height. I do understand that there are other important player attributes, but "you can' t teach height" is a well known phrase for a reason

BU is six out of our 16 league (and total) games. If we happen to match up favorably with them, we. could. go. all. the. way.
It all begins Saturday.

Longsuffering, I want whatever you are having - I have a feeling you don’t follow PL basketball very closely - we do not match up well vs. BU which won last year’s league championship. Hey, I know they play the games for a reason but we’ll be decided underdogs against the Terriers. Root hard for upsets.

The big issue with BU imho is the experience factor....and their being used to winning. Can't worry too much about matchups at this point; let them worry about having to get a body on GG. And personally, I think MF is a better all around player than BU's Mathon. It's away from the basket where I am more concerned.
In terms of big guys, for the style of The Full Nelson I wouldn't mind seeing a Nate Lufkin type of athlete: long, rangy, coordinated, good north-south speed. Maybe we will get that with Austin Lewis. Having said that, I'll still take Malachi Alexander 8 days a week over a 7 footer that can't play.
I am finally starting to get interested in this getting going (hopefully).......although it still feels a bit like a Marathon Oil/Athletes in Action exhibition season (or a sport wide redshirt season).

We have a good idea of what BU, Colgate and Army will look like this year, but given all the changes on our roster, I am not sure how to address match-up questions before we see the team play.
From brief video clips (player highlights and HC practice), the team appears to be bigger, longer, stronger, wider, quicker, faster, and more athletic. It might take some time to see if this translates into a few more wins or not.
Big issue is do we play at all, and will all the games be played?
I think some important but obvious issues for this team will be:
College game experience on the roster How quickly will the younger players develop during the season At what point will the bench demonstrate an ability to adjust to game conditions and improve decision-making
With that said I am looking forward to 2021 and tip-off this weekend

Good photo of him yesterday under the HC MBB Instagram page. I see from his bio, he was all-state in football as well as basketball. It would be a big plus if he is a strong defender of the other team's pg. When the defense breaks down at the point, bad things usually follow.

If my memory is somewhat accurate, I believe RJ effectively defended a high major guard recruit in a playoff game.

Will the games be on the radio?

Will the games be on the radio? There's a hell of a question - and one we've heard nothing about. As I understand things, HC on WEEI 1440 AM is effectively an infomercial. HC buys the time. This is a financial loser, but explains why HC trumps other WEEI network programming. In a year of tightening budgets, maybe the silence about radio coverage is because HC doesn't want to pay for the air time. Sounds like a question for Charles Bare or AD Blossom
