Posted on Twitter Evan Daniels of 247. Looks like a 6-6 PF with two years eligibility. Apparently was headed to UAlbany but changed his mind.
Was Southland ROY in 2018-19 averaged 8.5 and 5.5.

Still good...happiness shared is happiness multiplied! The link on the transfer portal shows him playing tough defense and aggressive under the boards on offense. He also has a nice shot.

Probably does deserve his own thread. Have to say, if we were going to turn over 9 roster spots in one year, this was the one. Really helping pass the time during quarantine.

Welcome to Holy Cross, Gerrale!

Gerrale Gates, a 6-foot-6 power forward who played the past two seasons for the University of New Orleans, has withdrawn his commitment to play basketball for the University at Albany, according to a source close to the program.
Multiple media reports late Sunday afternoon have Gates, who has two years of eligibility remaining, joining Holy Cross. He had made an oral commitment to UAlbany less than a week ago.
Gates, who is listed at 250 pounds, would have added some inside depth to what has been a perimeter-oriented Great Danes recruiting class. He averaged 8.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists in two seasons at New Orleans, starting 50 of 61 games. Gates, from Charlotte, N.C., was the 2018-19 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year.
Newcomers to UAlbany thus far are senior transfer Chuck Champion (Loyola, Md.), junior college transfers Jamal Horton and C.J. Kelly (both from Pratt, Kan., CC), and freshman Will Amica (Syracuse). All four are guards.
With Gates' de-commitment, UAlbany has two available scholarships for next season. The Danes lost four scholarship players to graduation (guard Ahmad Clark, forwards Romani Hansen and Kendall Lauderdale, and center Sasha French). In addition, sophomore forward Malachi de Sousa and freshman forward Mitch Doherty have left the program, and junior walk-on guard Rian Carter decided to transfer.

He gets to the line a lot (51.6 then 52.9 as frosh and soph for FT rate per KenPom) and connects at a decent .685. For comparison Joe P was our leader in FT rate at 40.5 last season. I love the fact that he has attempted 5 three pointers in two seasons: get in the paint and grab some loose basketballs!!

We trade one freshman of the year for another.

We trade one freshman of the year for another. Looks like the sky isn’t falling after all. We will miss Pridgen next year but with Gates filling the power forward slot for the following two years in what would have been Joe’s jr and sr years, not as much.

For what he lacks in height, he'll make up for in girth and strength. Although I do not know much about him, the surface level stats are promising. While he may not play in a game next season, he'll get that year to develop and improve the quality of the squad in practice. The frontcourt BN is building continues to show promise, something that we have not seen a ton of in recent seasons outside a few special talents.

I don’t know if it will turn out to be an even swap or not, actually it can’t given we would have had 3 years of JP vs 2 of GG, but I do think it lessens the blow of losing Joe. Time will tell just how much.

I can just imagine a 16-year-old Gerrale Gates sitting at home watching Sportscenter one day and seeing this play involving a local lad from Charlotte Catholic:
That memory no doubt stuck in the back of his head and influenced his decision yesterday.

I'm not so sure that this is an even swap like you seem to suggest. The equation is not simply Pridgen vs Gates. While it may be easier to see that granular trade-off with those two & RJ vs Lowder because they play the same positions, it really should be measured on the entire group that was brought in this spring versus those who left, because Pridgen, especially, was collateral damage for roster turnover that was necessary to try and bring this program out of the dumps. IMO, the program will see the biggest uplift in the combo of Bo/Louth//Townsell replacing Niego/Verbeek/Hargris/Copeland, who were never going to be significant contributors in Nelson's system, as well as bringing in a PG who may be the leader that this program desperately needs. There will only be one Torey Thomas, but reading articles about RJ makes me think/hope that he could be in that same mold.

If RJ is a pass first point, as he seems to be, I would put him closer to a Jave, but with a better shot. Jave was more a pass first point than Torey, who also was a fine passer.

Back to Gates, didn't see much video online, but these two very quick highlight videos show a pretty diverse range of clips from catching & scoring in transition, catching on the block with his back to the basket and scoring, driving to the hoop, and mid-range jump shots --- all against college competition (vs high school highlights against 16 year-olds)
One other observation from scanning Twitter -- he looks like he's in exponentially better shape now compared to some high school pictures. If he does have to sit out next year, another year to continue to focus on the weight room could bring big results down the line.

But I was talking more specifically as a leader of the program. If RJ is also in the same class as Torey or Jave as a player, it's a monster home run.

Physically, he looks like the kind of player we dreamed about having probably since Malachi graduated 4 years ago. He is an imposing figure.

He reminds me of a couple of old BC wide bodies Danya Abrams and Craig Smith if he can be anywhere close to those two we'll be very happy.

To add another forward from New England in there as a comparison -- Ryan Gomes. Gomes went to Providence as a pudgy kid, but once he leaned out become one of the top forwards in the country.
If Gates has half the skill as any of these guys, we will be pleased.
Ryan Gomes is also part of one of the most legendary college hoops press conferences I've ever seen. Points to anyone who knows this reference.
