Floyd coming back for a 5th year (he couldn't play one year due to grades, IIRC) didn't help Waltah (spelled w/fond memories of Tommy Heinsohn). I don't remember Walter playing a lot his sophomore year when Floyd sat. I don't think it was Chris Logan who got all the minutes at center. Maybe Pat Elzie?

My point was that Floyd normally would have graduated in 1983; therefore, Coates' junior year, 1984; there would have been one less player to take minutes from him. Prior to that, I don't think he was ready to play much more than he did.
Coates seemed to be 8th man that year with both Floyd and Elzie playing, doesn't look like there was much left on the bench after him.

He and fellow big man Coates weren't scorers but they were very nice guys. When they were seniors it worked out well that Jim McCaffrey transferred in to add a scoring punch.

Myles was a good guy, too. James Carlton was in that class as well. We have discussed previously how he was seriously injured after getting off to a good start as a freshman and then left mid year as a soph. Larry Westbrook and Jim Runcie (a transfer) were there, too.

James was a special man- stayed in touch with him for about 20 years after he left- his mom was an unbelievable woman.
