Ryan Gomes is also part of one of the most legendary college hoops press conferences I've ever seen. Points to anyone who knows this reference. Yes, that press conference - or specifically his answer to one question about a missed recruiting opportunity - was definitely legendary.

He reminds me of a couple of old BC wide bodies Danya Abrams and Craig Smith if he can be anywhere close to those two we'll be very happy. Good analogy You could add an Adrian Dantley, Charles Barkley-light. In the last 60 years I can think of no BC player with the same build and style of play.

I don't believe this has been mentioned yet but is worth noting -- admissions seems to be playing ball with Nelson; bringing in a JuCo and a kid from the University of New Orleans isn't something we have ever seen in the past.

Gates was a spring 2019 league all-academic at UNO as a frosh (I know, not the PL) and he will arrive at HC as a soph after 2 years in college already - so giving him 5 years effectively to get his degree is a good plan to use in this case and in the future

like the big body on gates and hope the comparisons to some of these bangers in smith, abrams, and gomes come to fruition.
as for sov's comment on the press conference, calhoun was undoubtedly one of the biggest assholes in college basketball. an asshole and a pussy for dodging us and ultimately screwing our season as avb tweaked his back having to scramble to play that game in san francisco. i hope calhoun is even more bitter now than he was in this telling video as he deserves the worst.

That would be great! Hope it isn't because the yield for this class might be down?

Funny, my first thought upon seeing him was wondering if he was related to Antonio Gates.

When HC was giving out all the uniform numbers, guess they were saving #10 for Junior. May have to get a custom fit.

He has improved steadily as a free-throw shooter who (as KY points out elsewhere) gets to the line at a good clip. As a high school senior, he made just 62% of his freebies, 68% as a UNO freshman, then almost 72% last season. Also looks to be a capable and willing passer in the half-court.

Looks like the sky isn’t falling after all. We will miss Pridgen next year but with Gates filling the power forward slot for the following two years in what would have been Joe’s jr and sr years, not as much. I'm not so sure that this is an even swap like you seem to suggest. We lose a slasher but gain a basher. JP's points and more will have to be made up by committee from the newcomers and perhaps from Butler playing in his natural position.

Using his middle name w/o being called "Fitzy" ! What's wrong with being Fitzy, or, for that matter, Sully, Murph, etc? Our friend, Bill Simmons, has written on this topic. grantland.com/features/dawn-mailbag/

I don't think we've had this build of player in my time following HC (2004-present, '09 grad). I'm also a Cincinnati fan (by virtue of law school) so I've seen the benefit of a beefy 6'6 big with good hands (Eric Hicks or Yancy Gates). I'm excited

Welcome to Crossports, dickiehc09. I also like the idea of a big body under the boards for HC.

I'm excited I believe we'll find out next Weds if transfers like Gates will be eligible next year or still have to sit out a year after transferring. I believe the vote is still on for 5-20.

agree regarding the wide body. haven't seen gates play, but sounds like he's not afraid to use it. would be great if he is available next year.
